A total of 28 compounds were identified. Major components of the essential oils from its root were found to be elemicin (60.97%), 3β-24-methylene-9,19-cyclolanostan-3-ol (17.67%) and pentadecane (12.73%), whereas those from its rhizome included elemicin (69.46%), pentadecane (18.85%) and α-pinene (2.56%). FAKHRUL ALAM, MD. ABDUR RHAMAN AND MD. ABUL HASSAN Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Keywords: Angiosperm diversity; Teknaf wildlife sanctuary; Bangladesh. Abstract Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary has been explored to assess angioperm diversity using traditional taxonomic techniques during 2010 to 2011. The assessment has resulted in recording of total 535 angioperm species under 103 familiies and 370 genera. For each species scientific name, Bangla name (whenever available), family and habit are provided. Of 535 species, 178 represented by herbs, 110 by shrubs, 150 by trees, 87 by climbers and 10 by epiphytes. In Magnoliopsida (dicots), Fabaceae is the largest family represented by 38 species, while in Liliopsida (monocots), Poaceae is the largest family represented by 29 species. Introduction Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary, previously declared as game reserve in 1983 under the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment Act, 1974), is located in the Teknaf and Ukhia Upazilas of Cox’s Bazar district near Myanmar border. Geographical position of the reserve is in between 20052”-21009” N and 92008”-92018”E (Rosario, 1997). The Reserve is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the south and west, the Naf River to the east and Monkhali and Thainkhali to the north. The reserve is locally managed by three range offices (Teknaf, Whykhong and Shilkhali ranges) and ten forest bits. The total area of the reserve is about 11651 ha (Green, 1987). -

Voravuthikunchai Natural Products Research Center and Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand Correspondence : [email protected] ABSTRACT Increasing numbers of reported cases of food-associated infections and health problems associated with synthetic additives have led to a growing interest by consumers in ingredients from natural sources. Some members of the family Zingiberaceae have been extensively used as a condiment for flavoring as well as traditional medicines. These include Alpinia galanga (galanga), Boesenbergia pandurata (krachai), Curcuma amada (mango ginger), Curcuma longa (turmeric), Curcuma zedoria (zedoary), Kampferia galanga (proh hom), Zin- giber officinale (ginger), and Zingiber zerumbet (zerumbet ginger). Their antimicrobial activities against important foodborne pathogens including Bacillus cereus, Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocyto- genes, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Hepatitis A Norwalk virus, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia are outlined. In addition to the antimicrobial activities against a wide range of microorganisms, their antioxidant activities have been documented. More than seven hundred of medicinal plants have so far been enlisted as growing in Bangladesh (Yousuf et. al., 2009). This number of indigenous medicinal plants is increasing day by day in this country. Most of these plants are used by the rural practitioner, especially tribal practitioner of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) as an efficacious remedy to treat various ailments. The present study reveals that the tribal practitioners of Chittagong Hill Tracts have applied 138 plant species belonging to 54 families for the treatment of many complicated diseases such as Jaundice, Rheumatism, Skin diseases, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Asthma, Malaria, Stomach pain, Gonorrhoea, Diabetes, Urinary diseases, Liver diseases, Pneumonia, Menstrual diseases, Heart diseases, etc. Short diagnostic description of these plants is described. ABUL HASSAN Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Abstract The present article focuses the status of plant diversity of Dhaka University campus. A total of 541 plant species have been recorded from the campus area. These species are assigned to 117 families. For each species local name, scientific name, family and habit have been provided. Species presentation in the families varied from 1 to 26. 47% species belongs to 16 families and 53% species belongs to others 101 families. Euporbiaceae is the largest family in the Dicotyledon having 26 species whereas Liliaceae is the largest family in Monocotyledon having 18 species. Among the recorded species, 37% are represented by herbs, 29% by trees, 21% by shrubs, 11% by climbers, 2% by epiphytes and 0.2% by parasites. Plant species recorded in the campus categorized into different purpose groups. The result showed that 59% plant species represented by native species whereas 41% plant species represented by exotics. The survey spotted the presence a number of threatened species of Bangladesh in the gardent of the campus. Such species are Corypha taliera, Podocarpus nerifolia, Mangifera sylvatica, Willoughbia edulis, Hydnocarpus kurzii, Gloriosa superva, Entada redii, Hedychium coccinium and Vandopsis gigantea.
