2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING “Every good gift and every perfect act of giving is from above.” What could be a more fitting tribute to the beneficence of our creator and to the generosity of our community than the Saint James School motto—selected as the theme for the 2015-2016 Annual Report of Giving? In the pages that follow, we honor you, our givers, and your generous gifts. Your acts of giving allow us to continue a cherished and long-held tradition of educating the next generation of givers and leaders for good in the world. Without you, this extraordinary mission would not be possible. A publication from the Office of Margaret M. McGuigan James M. Gifts received after June 30, the conclusion of our fiscal year, will be included in the 2016-2017 Annual Report. 4 From the Chairman of the Board Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of the School Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of the School. As we reflect on the 2015-2016 academic year, I thought I would take a moment to share my appreciation for the generosity of spirit that has become a hallmark of the Saint James School community. As many of you know, we are a small school. As such, our alumni, parent, and donor base is modest in size. And yet, each year, because of each donor, because of each and every one of you, we meet our annual fund goal, celebrate contributions to capital campaigns—in this case, a new fine arts center—and make strides toward raising the School’s endowment. This is because we care about this modest, yet extraordinary institution that has touched our lives and the lives of those we love, including our friends, our children, and our grandchildren, in innumerable ways. This deep and abiding sense of caring has not changed since I attended Saint James in the 1960’s. At that time, we had a dedicated faculty and staff, a close-knit community, and a multitude of academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities. Masters and prefects were inspiring and exemplary leaders and role models, setting an example for underclass students. Our Mummer’s led many wonderful productions and students like me were empowered to excel in every area of school life, and to try new things. Glee Club, Newspaper Club, Yearbook Club, a Historical Society, a Literary Society, and a Math Society, Choir, and a student vestry were just some of the ways students could contribute, serving something greater than themselves. We were proud of our small school and of our ability to strive to be better students, athletes, musicians, and artists for the good of society beyond the boundaries of campus. Generations of students continue to seize these opportunities, and to take part in long-held Saint James School traditions. All of these opportunities are indeed, gifts from above. Today, the curriculum is more diverse, as is the student body. Students are engaged in community service opportunities that make a difference in the lives of others. New opportunities and gifts abound. Yet, we have in common a similar atmosphere of cooperation, achievement, community, and spirituality. We are all privileged to be a part of Saint James—and that is the greatest gift of all. Respectfully yours, Lud L. Ludington Sells Board President and Chairman 5 6 From the Headmaster Dear Friends and Supporters of Saint James School Dear Friends and Supporters of Saint James School, The theme for this year’s Annual Report comes from the School’s motto, which was taken by our founders Bishop William Whittingham and the Rev. Dr. William Augustus Muhlenberg from the Epistle of Saint James in 1842: “Every good gift and every perfect act of giving is from above.” We chose this theme because in gathering and publishing this report we are acknowledging “every good gift” that you have given over the past school year. We are thereby acknowledging you as the “givers” and also pointing to all the good which your “good gifts” are doing and have done. Donors to Saint James support the School in three very significant ways: • They give to the operating fund every year through their Annual Fund support and through gifts supporting financial aid and special programs. • They give to capital projects such as the new faculty duplex which we are now building, the new Fine Arts Center, which we plan to begin building this spring, and the new Athletics Center, which is next in the “pipeline.” • They give, most often in their estate planning, to the school’s endowment in order to guarantee the future of Saint James and to provide more resources for faculty salaries and financial aid. All of this giving is vital to the quality of what we do here at Saint James. Our operating budget would be greatly diminished without the Annual Fund. Our campus would fail to improve, and we would frankly fail to “keep up” as a school without donor support for our capital projects. Finally, we will not have the resources we need in the future, for financial aid in particular, if we do not continue to grow our endowment. And this is why all of you who give are so important to us, why we as a school are so very grateful. We simply cannot sustain, improve, and build Saint James without your continuing support. Thank you so very much. Yours faithfully, The Revd. D. Stuart Dunnan, D.
