The parish starts to the north of Little Bedwyn, stretches to Great Bedwyn and Shalbourne in the east and then extends west to Grafton and Burbage. The parish has a population of 4,829 (ONS 2011). The nearby market town of Marlborough offers a variety of independent and specialist shops as well as national chains, a range of local amenities and a weekly market. Burbage has a primary school as well as a number of amenities including two pubs. The village is bypassed by the A346 which runs to the west and which links up Marlborough and Salisbury. Junction 14 of the M4 is located approximately 14.5 miles (23 km) to the north. The nearest mainline railway station is at Pewsey which is 5 miles (8 km) to the west of Burbage and accessed via the B3087. The station provides a mainline train connection to London Paddington with an approximate journey time of 1 hour 10 minutes as well as further services to the South West. Situation The site lies to the south of the village and is level. The site is accessed via Saddlers Way which is an adopted highway. The site is surrounded to the north by existing residential development and an area of open space to the west. Further residential development borders the eastern boundary with the A338 and additional dwellings to the south. The land uses surrounding the village are predominately agricultural. Description The site is greenfield extending to circa 4.02 acres (1.63 hectares). The site is level and currently used for agricultural production. The visit was requested by Mr Geoff Wilcox, who is the syndicate secretary and river keeper. The visit was focussed on assessing the habitat and management of the water for wild trout Salmo trutta. Comments in this report are based on observations on the day of the site visit and discussions with Mr Wilcox. Throughout the report, normal convention is followed with respect to bank identification i.e. banks are designated Left Bank (LB) or Right Bank (RB) whilst looking downstream. Catchment and Fishery Overview The Hampshire Avon is recognised as one of the most important river habitats in the UK. It supports a diverse range of fish and invertebrates and over 180 different aquatic plant species. The Avon (and its surrounding water meadows) has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC); however, much of the Avon and its tributaries have been significantly modified for land drainage, agriculture, milling and even navigation. 3 The Avon begins its life as two separate streams known as the Avon West and the Avon East, rising near Devizes and the Vale of Pewsey respectively. The Avon West is designated as a SSSI whilst for reasons unknown, the Avon East is not.

This included 153 men and 229 women and covered 168 households. (i) The highest population enjoyed by Froxfield was 625 in 1841; the lowest 266 in 1971.
