Indicate whether the property has historic integrity.) ______________________________________________________________________________ Summary Paragraph The Bailey Grocery Buildings are a functionally related pair of red brick commercial buildings located at 513 West Ionia Street in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, in a neighborhood just northwest of the city’s central business district. Built in the 1920s, and historically addressed as 513-515 and 517-519, each of the buildings is a flat roofed, two-story double storefront with apartments above. Typical of the Commercial Brick style of American commercial architecture, the buildings have minimal ornamentation,DRAFT with notable features including decorative and corbelled brickwork, stepped parapets with limestone coping, and bands of prismatic glass above large glass display windows. The two buildings retain significant historic integrity on the exterior, including most original windows, and some interior features. ____________________________________________________________________________ Narrative Description The Bailey Grocery Buildings are located at 513 West Ionia Street in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan. The neighborhood, which developed in the late nineteenth-century, is just to the northwest of Lansing’s National Register listed downtown commercial district and the Michigan State Capitol Building, a National Historic Landmark. The pair of functionally related buildings sit on the south side of Ionia Street, between North Pine and North Chestnut Streets. The area is a mix of residential and commercial buildings to the north, east, and west. These are primarily two-story, late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century houses, many converted to multi-family housing and offices. Immediately to the east of the buildings is a small, asphalt paved parking lot. To the west is a late nineteenth-century, Queen Anne style house that has been converted into offices. Directly south of the buildings, at 510 West Ottawa Street, is the First Presbyterian Church, a Colonial Revival building completed in 1953. The terrain of the area is largely flat. The residential and commercial buildings in the neighborhood are situated on small, grassy lots and surrounded by numerous large trees, particularly in the right of way between the streets and sidewalks. The Bailey Grocery Buildings sit on a single, rectangular parcel of land, located in Block 92 of the Original Plat of the City of Lansing. The plot measures 88 feet (across Ionia Street) by 132 feet. The two brick buildings are sited on the northern half of the parcel and face north onto Ionia Street. The southern half of the property is an asphalt paved parking lot. Additional metered parking spaces are located to the north, in front of the buildings. A narrow, asphalt- paved drive runs between the two buildings to the parking area at the back. A concrete sidewalk runs east to west in front of the buildings along Ionia Street. Built in the 1920s, the Bailey Grocery Buildings are historically and currently functionally related, sharing not only a purpose - neighborhood commerce, but ownership, a lot, architectural style, and even a physical connection. The older of the two buildings, 517-519 West Ionia, dates to 1923, although portions of the original building at 517 were likely built in the early 1900s. Orla H. Bailey acquired the property, which already contained a commercial building, in 1915, and had Bailey’s Grocery built in 1922-1923, likely expanding on the existing wood-frame commercial building. Bailey acquired a portion of the adjacent property to the east in 1925, as his business prospered, and had the second structure built to provide expanded services to the surrounding neighborhood. The newer building, 513-515 West Ionia, opened in 1927 and originally housed a barbershop and Russel Bakery. By 1932, Bailey had taken
