Discover the story of Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy and the birth of the ‘Babes’ – the players, the games, the Building of the Dynasty. Having had the foresight to appoint an untried manager in Busby, the former Manchester City star overcame the challenge of having no home ground and cobbled together a United side to win the league and FA Cup. A lack of financial power saw the club embark on a youth development scheme under Murphy. Crowned First Division champions again in 1956, Busby took his youngsters to compete against the great sides in the fledgling European Cup; but it was a determination that was to prove fatal in Munich in 1958, on the homeward journey from a quarter-final tie in Belgrade. The unfulfilled dream had become a nightmare. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by LJMU Research Online Football Fandom, Mobilization and Herbert Blumer Football Fandom, Mobilization and Herbert Blumer: A Social Movement Analysis of F.C. United of Manchester Abstract This article explores the establishment and development of fan-owned association football club, F.C. United of Manchester. It does this by drawing upon extensive ethnographic fieldwork, including interviews, observations and an analysis of multiple texts, such as fanzines, web-based and media reports materials and discusses this using Herbert Blumer’s theory of collective behavior. As such, the article addresses two research questions: first, what the empirical case example of F.C. United of Manchester offers to the critical understanding of Blumer’s theory and second, what the theory can give to the understanding of twenty-first century protests in popular culture. Therefore this article contributes to contemporary debates on association football fandom, social movements and the theories of Herbert Blumer. Keywords: Association Football; Fandom; Social Movement; Herbert Blumer; Collective Behavior 1 Football Fandom, Mobilization and Herbert Blumer Football Fandom, Mobilization and Herbert Blumer: A Social Movement Analysis of F.C. • Iain Mccartney Is the Definitive Manchester United Historian; He Brings United's Past Into Vivid Focus and Manages to Mix R
“Iain McCartney is the definitive Manchester United historian; he brings United’s past into vivid focus and manages to mix research with verve as the reader is pulled it United’s fascinating past which should never be forgotten. His name on a title brings a sense of trust that you are reading history as it happened.” – Red News. “Prolific Manchester United author Iain McCartney looks at at the post-war rebuilding of the club, from managerless and homeless - Old Trafford was virtually destroyed by German bombing - to FA Cup winners and three-times First Division champions under the hitherto untried manager Matt Busby before tragedy stalled their rise with the Munich crash in 1958.” – Backpass “Yet again, Iain McCartney shows that he is the definitive story-teller of Manchester United’s history. Another great book from his collection.” – Danny Taylor, The Guardian “An informative account of the pre-war period followed by a detailed look at: (1) Matt taking the reins at a bombed out Old Trafford (2) the cobbling together and shaping of the team which won the 1948 FA Cup and 1952 League Championship (3) the building of the youth system and the blooding of the Babes and, finally, (4) the successes of that great team. This impressively researched book is highly readable and covers a seminal period in United’s history. Another book from the excellent Pitch Publishing.” – PrideOfManchester.com “Iain McCartney is one of those ‘Mister Manchester United men’ who knows as much as anybody about them. For me, the essence of any new book is about acquiring knowledge.
