He taught at the Juilliard School from 1966 to 2009 and was also a longtime faculty member of Mannes College in New York. “He was known in particular for his technical virtuosity, the beauty and flexibility of his tone and a deep musical understanding that was rooted in his fealty to the composer’s original intent. (Mr. Lateiner was an avid collector of… [musical] first editions over which he pored studiously before performing the work in question.)” “As a soloist, Mr. Lateiner appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, among them the New York and Berlin Philharmonics, the Boston and Chicago Symphonies, and the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras. [1] (title), 2-51 [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Watermark of crown, letters "BCV," and three crescent moons. Some handwritten corrections, executed in Beethoven's lifetime including changes to notes and clefs in black ink; further clef changes in red crayon; page breaks for a new edition suggested in pencil. The text in op. 2, no. 2, first movement, right hand, m. 203 is unique to this source. Some wear; early paper reinforcement to spine and outer leaves. - 4 - First Edition, first issue, fourth state. Stroh B4. Kinsky p. 8, issue "a." Hoboken 2, 16. "The seven states of Artaria's first edition represent successive changes in the music plates. Changes in the plate for the title page - which appeared in three states... - identify the copy's function as proof (A), first issue (B), or Titelauflage (C)... As suggested in the chronology above, the first three states of the edition were proofs, evidenced by traces of initial errors... Multiple surviving copies of the first issue (B) thus represent the fourth state of the first edition." "A copy owned by Jacob Lateiner (B4) includes some alterations that appear neither in other copies of the first issue nor in the later issues printed from the same plates. A few of these changes are obviously handwritten in russet crayon and pencil, but most of the others resemble printed corrections. Closer study, however, revealed that these seemingly printed corrections were also meticulously added by hand with ink slightly darker than that used to print from the plates. Although absent from Artaria's first edition, nearly all of these changes appear in other editions from Beethoven's lifetime. The single exceptions are pitch changes in 19/3/8 (op. 2/2/i/203). Here the editor anticipates the repeated passage four measures later... Though the alterations in B4 have no bearing on other copies of the first or later issues, the editor's exactness with them suggests that this copy... may have functioned as a Stichvorlage for another publisher. Other marks changing page breaks show that the new edition was to be reduced from the original fifty plates to a more economical forty-one. No corresponding printed edition has yet come to light." Boosey & Co., [1825?] First English edition PMC 2036; The Mary Flagler Cary Music Collection Variations on preexisting themes—particularly those taken from operas—were popular during the nineteenth century and frequently cultivated by virtuoso performer-composers. These instrumental works were conceived as a means of displaying a performer’s (rather than a composer’s) skill, brilliance, artistry, and technical prowess. The adolescent Liszt based these variations on the theme “Ah come nascondere la fiamma,” from Rossini’s 1819 opera Ermione. Years later Liszt would compose a virtuosic piece based on the overture to Rossini’s Guillaume Tell. [Playbill for a concert at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, England, 2 June 1827] [London: W. Rey, 1827] James Fuld Collection After arriving in Paris in 1823, Liszt and his father made three visits to England (1824, 1825, and 1827). This playbill documents Liszt’s appearance at Covent Garden on 2 June 1827. The featured artist at the end of the first part, Master Liszt performed a fantasia. Such works were of an improvisatory character, introducing familiar tunes that served as themes to be varied and embellished. In this case, Liszt chose the popular melody Rule Britannia. For many years the young virtuoso had already proven most adept at improvising on tunes suggested to him on the spot.

The slow struggle to rehabilitate the once mighty http://oq.oxfordjournals.org/ and internationally beloved composer is far from complete. Recent years have seen a surge in scholarship—including a number of book-length studies, the publication of his diaries, and, importantly, essays that interrogate the origins of the enduring prejudices against Meyerbeer.1 Despite these efforts, performances of his operas are still rare, only limited audio and video recordings are available, and, even if recent scholarship has been kinder, the choice of Meyerbeer as a at University of Pennsylvania Library on May 7, 2013 subject for inquiry still raises eyebrows. At the center of any effort to recover or reconsider Meyerbeer lies the issue of the materials and the machines he used to produce his famous “effects.” His per- ceived focus on matter rather than spirit provoked Wagner’s highly quotable declara- tion that Meyerbeer offered “effects without causes”—a phrase first applied to the moment in Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète (1849) when, after the reformer protagonist and his allies resolve to storm the city of Münster, a fog dissolves to reveal the city in the distance. This dramatic and crowd-pleasing “effect” (in a work full of such moments) presumably lacked a “cause,” in that it did not complete either a musical or psychological development. Along similar lines, Wagner presented Meyerbeer’s music as lacking the “inwardness” of great music; the religious enlightenment even- tually sought in Bayreuth in Wagner’s time was contrasted to the commercial enter- tainment and cheap thrills delivered by Meyerbeer’s performances in Paris.

    FREDERIC CHOPIN AND HIS PUBLISHERS February 1998 – April 1998 CASE 1 INTRODUCTION CASE TEXT The 1830s have been called “the decade of the piano” because during that period the piano and the music written for it played a dominant role in European musical culture. The piano had, of course, already been popular for more than half a century. But by the third decade of the nineteenth century, changes in the instrument and its audience transformed the piano’s role in musical life. As the Industrial Revolution hit its stride, piano manufacturers developed methods for building many more pianos than had previously been feasible, and at lower cost. Pianos ceased to be the exclusive province of the wealthy; an expanding middle class could also aspire to own them and make music at home. Thousands of amateur pianists began to take lessons, buy printed music, and attend concerts. Virtuosos like Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Sigismund Thalberg, and Franz Liszt became the first musical superstars, touring Europe and astonishing audiences with music they had composed to display their piano technique. Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) rode the crest of the piano’s popularity. His piano playing was highly regarded even by other virtuosos, and his music--nearly all of it for the piano- -was in great demand from professional and amateur musicians alike. Unlike the other composer-pianists of his time, however, Chopin rarely gave public concerts; his performing was generally confined to the salons of wealthy aristocrats and businessmen. Public awareness of Chopin’s music came about primarily through its publication, and the process of shepherding his works into print assumed great importance for him.

La Gazette musicale parut chaque semaine du 5 janvier 1834 au 25 octobre 1835. Fétis, « fatigué de l'inconstance du public2 » céda sa revue à Maurice Schlesinger et annonça le fait dans la Revue musicale du 1er novembre 183 5. Schlesinger incorpora les deux titres en créant La Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris. Celle-ci fut publiée le dimanche du 1er novembre 1835 au 31 décembre 1880. Pendant vingt-sept mois, du 3 janvier 1839 au 1er avril 1841, elle fut publiée deux fois par semaine, le jeudi et le dimanche. Durant la guerre franco­ prusse la publication fut interrompue pendant treize mois, du 28 août 1870 au 1er octobre 1871. L'entière publication compte quarante-sept volumes et trois suppléments de musique : Album de chant (1842-43), Album de piano (1848-59) et Album de danses (1848-67)3. La présente publication du RIPM couvre les deux revues de Schlesinger. Chaque page de la revue est divisée en deux colonnes. De 1834 à 1839, puis de 1841 à 1880, les numéros hebdomadaires comptent de sept à seize pages.
