Saturday: 8.00am - 4.00pm 56 CAMBRIDGE ROAD, (OPPOSITE TIMMO'S ITM) TE AWAMUTU TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2010 3 Celebrating 100 years of banding Te Awamutu Brass has evolved from the Te Awamutu Town Band formed in 1910, but is acknowledged as being the third brass band based in Te Awamutu. The first band was the Te Awamutu Cavalry Band, formed in about 1870 from Militia men stationed here following the Maori Wars. They were recorded as played at the opening of the Te Awamutu Railway Station in 1880. Te Awamutu Brass played on the same spot to celebrate the railway centenary in 1980 — it would be an insult if the band played there now. How times change. The regiment disbanded in 1885, as did the band. In 1895 the first Te Awamutu Town Band was formed, and a subscription raised funds to purchase instruments. It disbanded after a couple of years and the instruments were put into the care of the Town Board. In 1908 a group of citizens renewed interest in a band, and the Town Board released the instruments. Public fundraising paid for more instruments and in 1910 the second ‘Te Awamutu Town Band’ was formed. The history of Te Awamutu Brass, its developments, band rooms, successes, membership and community involvement has been recorded and published for the 100th anniversary. Successes include winning the New Zealand C Grade National Championship in 1965 and 2008, plus travelling to Australia in 1983 and winning the Australasian C Grade Championship. They returned in 1988 and won the Australian C Grade CFP title. Of note are Anzac Day commemorations and Christmas Parades. The annual Christmas Carols around the streets of Te Awamutu playing from the back of a truck is a unique fundraising event that brings Christmas spirit to every- one in the town, and the band also leads public Christmas Carols annually, which have taken a vari- ety of forms. CINEMA SCENE The Other Guys

Terry Hoitz’s (Mark Wahlberg) past mistakes in the line of duty and Allen Gamble’s (Will Ferrell) reluctance to take risks have landed them the roles of the ‘Other Guys’—disgraced New York City police detectives relegated to filling out paperwork for cocky hero cops Danson (Dwayne John- son) and Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson). But every cop has his day and soon Gamble and Hoitz stumble into a seemingly innocu- ous case no other detective wants to touch that could turn into New York City’s biggest crime. It’s the opportunity of their lives, but do these guys have the right stuff?
