  • Surrounded! “C. S. LEWIS: SURPRISED by JOY!”
June 21, 2015 Surrounded! “C. S. LEWIS: SURPRISED BY JOY!” Rev. Gary Haller First United Methodist Church Birmingham, Michigan John 16:19-22 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’? Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” Matthew 13:44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” “Once there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. This story is about something that happened to them when they were sent away from London during the war because of the air-raids. They were sent to the house of an old Professor who lived in the heart of the country, ten miles from the nearest railway station and two miles from the nearest post office.” Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy soon realize that they have a lot of freedom due to the lack of supervision and decide to play a game of hide and seek in the house.

  • Styx Live at the Red Robinson Show Theatre
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 18, 2011 BOULEVARD CASINO PRESENTS STYX LIVE AT THE RED ROBINSON SHOW THEATRE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4 Coquitlam, BC – Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early 70’s, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late 70’s and into the 80’s due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1972 followed by Styx II, The Serpent Is Rising and Man of Miracles. And while the albums helped them to build a substantial following locally, Styx failed to break through to the mainstream until a track from their second album, "Lady" started to get substantial airplay in 1974. After the song was issued as a single nationwide, it quickly shot to #6 on the singles chart as Styx II was certified gold. Guitarist Tommy Shaw then joined in 1975 and proved to be the missing piece of the puzzle for the band as most of their subsequent releases throughout the late 70’s earned at least platinum certification and produced such hit singles as "Come Sail Away", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man" and "Fooling Yourself”. Styx then became one of North America’s top rock acts due to such big hit singles as "Too Much Time on My Hands". It also marked the first time in history that a band released four consecutive triple-platinum albums. A career-encompassing live album, Caught in the Act was issued in 1984 before Styx went on hiatus with the majority of its members pursuing solo projects throughout the remainder of the decade.

  • Exodus 202 1 Edition Dr
Notes on Exodus 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE The Hebrew title of this book (we'elleh shemot) originated from the ancient practice of naming a Bible book after its first word or words. "Now these are the names of" is the translation of the first two Hebrew words. "The Hebrew title of the Book of Exodus, therefore, was to remind us that Exodus is the sequel to Genesis and that one of its purposes is to continue the history of God's people as well as elaborate further on the great themes so nobly introduced in Genesis."1 Exodus cannot stand alone, in the sense that the book would not make much sense without Genesis. The very first word of the book, translated "now," is a conjunction that means "and." The English title "Exodus" is a transliteration of the Greek word exodus, from the Septuagint translation, meaning "exit," "way out," or "departure." The Septuagint translators gave the book this title because of the major event in it, namely, the Israelites' departure from Egypt. "The exodus is the most significant historical and theological event of the Old Testament …"2 DATE AND WRITER Moses, who lived from about 1525 to 1405 B.C., wrote Exodus (17:14; 24:4; 34:4, 27-29). He could have written it, under the inspiration of the 1Ronald Youngblood, Exodus, pp. 9-10. 2Eugene H. Merrill, Kingdom of Priests, p. 57. Copyright Ó 2021 by Thomas L. • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

  • Building Puppets
StopAnimation-07 6/11/06 10:10 PM Page 129 Stop-Motion Chapter 7 Building Puppets think too many people take puppets for granted. Stop and think for a moment about how surreal and amazing the concept of a puppet is. It resembles a person or an animal but has no life of its own. It is simply an inanimate object, a lifeless lump of material. But when a real person manipulates it Isomehow, it brings forth the illusion of life. Puppets have been with us since ancient times, and, for me, they have always been a fascination in one form or another. Having grown up in the late 1970s through the ’80s, Jim Henson’s Muppets were a constant source of entertainment. I vividly remember seeing them on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1981, and seeing live puppet performances from different world traditions there as well. In elemen- tary school, we had a puppeteer who brought his marionette plays to the gymnasium every year, starring a dragon named Applesauce. Since I had toy pup- pets of my own, I knew how they were operated, yet at the same time I believed they were alive. Another obsession of mine from growing up in the ’80s were the animatronic animal rock bands at places like Chuck E. Cheese’s and Showbiz Pizza Place. These also seemed to be alive, but they were not operated by live puppeteers. Instead, they were programmed by a computer synced with audio tapes behind the stage, delivering a performance that had been premeditated to repeat itself.
