VEGETATION CLASSIFICATION IN AYUBIA NATIONAL PARK, PAKISTAN USING ORDINATION METHODS SHEIKH SAEED* AHMAD AND QURATULANN Department of Environmental Sciences, Fatima Jinnah Women University Rawalpindi, Pakistan Abstract Present study was conducted in Ayubia National Park which was declared as a protected/National Park. The study classified the species abundance and its distribution. A total of 59 species that belonged to 32 families were recorded. Overall two major communities were identified using TWINSPAN. Major group 1 comprised of Hedera nepalensis and Adiantum caudatum and major group 2 comprised of Plantago major and Rumex nepalensis. The species data was subjected to Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling, specially used for extracting nonlinear gradients in species composition. The overall data was analyzed by Monte-Carlo test to access the stress in relation to dimensionality. Furthermore overlay matrix was carried out for only two dominant species that is Adiantum caudatum and Hedera nepalensis to show a relationship in relation to score on a particular axis. However, these forests have been heavily transformed over the years by logging, grazing and agriculture. This thesis examines the extent to which the diversity and abundance of medicinal plants are affected between forest-use types as a result of such transformations. In northwestern Pakistan we studied old-growth forest, degraded forests (forests degraded by logging, derived woodland, agroforest and degraded sites) and restored forests (re-growth forests and reforestation sites). An approximate map was initially established covering an area of 90 km2 of the studied forest-use types and fifteen and five plots were allocated to five and two forest-use types respectively at altitudes ranging from 2,200 m to 2,400 m asl. The abundance and diversity of medicinal plants were then assessed therein. Of the fifty-nine medicinal plant species (herbs and ferns) studied, old-growth forest contained the highest number thereof with fifty-five species, followed by re-growth forest with forty-nine species and finally, forest degraded by logging with only forty species.

    The Lahore Journal of Economics 11 : 2 (Winter 2006) pp. 43-70 Willingness to Pay for Margalla Hills National Park: Evidence from the Travel Cost Method Himayatullah Khan* Abstract This study, which is among the first in Pakistan to value recreational benefits, estimates the benefits of the Margalla Hills National Park near Islamabad. The study examines how much park visitors are willing to pay to visit the park. Annual benefits from the park are considerable—the total annual consumer surplus or economic benefit obtained from recreation in the park is approximately Rs. 23 million (US $ 0.4 million). Various factors influence the value visitors obtain from the park — these include travel cost, household income, and the quality of the park. Improvements in the quality of the park are estimated to increase recreational benefits by 39%. The study recommends that a park entrance fee of Rs. 20 per person be introduced, which could be utilized for park management. This would generate nearly Rs. 11 million in revenues annually, a sizable amount of money that represents about 4% of the annual budget allocated to the environment sector in Pakistan. As things stand, the country is at a crossroads for a much warmer world. According to German Watch, Pakistan has been ranked in top ten of the countries most affected by climate change in the past 20 years. The reasons behind include the impact of back-to-back floods since 2010, the worst drought episode (1998-2002) as well as more recent droughts in Tharparkar and Cholistan, the intense heat wave in Karachi (in Southern Pakistan generally) in July 2015, severe windstorms in Islamabad in June 2016, increased cyclonic activity and increased incidences of landslides and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the northern parts of the country. Pakistan’s climate change concerns include increased variability of monsoons, the likely impact of receding Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalayan (HKH) glaciers due to global warming and carbon soot deposits from trans-boundary pollution sources, threatening water inflows into Indus River System (IRS), severe water-stressed conditions particularly in arid and semi-arid regions impacting agriculture and livestock production negatively, decreasing forest cover and increased level of saline water in the Indus delta also adversely affecting coastal agriculture, mangroves and breeding grounds of fish. Total 66 species were recorded during spring. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), and Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) were used for the plant community analysis. Plant species of each community type are presented together with the information on dominance and sub-dominance species. Four plant co- mmunities association i.e. Prosopis- Fagonia-Saccharum association, Zizyphus- Saccharum-Acacia association, Fagonia-Zizyphus-Eragrostis association and Aerua-Acacia- Cymbopogon association were recognized.     Financial and Economic Analysis and Business Evaluation Financial and Economic Analysis The purpose of the project is to improve transmission capacity by replacement of the existing transmission line with a high quality and low loss transmission line and to increase the number of the transmission lines. The benefit of the improvement of the transmission network is to contribute to the increase of power supply to the capital city area and to the improvement of the reliability of electricity supply. The objective for evaluation of the project is to analyse the possibility of implementation of improvement of the existing 220kV transmission line between Tarbela substation and Burhan substation (approximately 35 km). In addition to the improvement mentioned above, analysis of the possibility of implementation of the new construction of a branch transmission line (approximately 40 km) will also be conducted, which will be reviewed in the other report. The output of the implementation of the project, e.g. goods and services, is the transmission infrastructure to be improved by the project. The fundamental framework of the project is to be as follows; (1) Output: Increase of electricity supply by improvement of the transmission line (2) Outcome: Improvement of reliability on electricity supply and countermeasures against future expected insufficient transmission line capacity (3) Impact: Sustainable economic and social development Financial Analysis Financial analysis is to be carried out to evaluate the profitability of NTDCL as the implementation organization. The investment amount is to be estimated by the market price as the financial cost and at the same time the financial benefit given by the implementation of the project is also to be estimated by the market price.
