Madagascar

The country of Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. Located off the east coast of Africa, it has a population of 22 million people. The Seventh-day Adventist membership is nearly 140,000 or about one Adventist for every 157 people.

It’s within this context that the Church leaders decided to launch the Global Mission Pioneer program in order to reduce the big gap of those who need to know Jesus.

The pioneer work started in 2003 on this island. Skilled lay members were recruited and trained and then deployed in areas of Madagascar where there was no Seventh-day Adventist presence.

The task has not been easy. Global Mission pioneers have encountered many challenges related to traditional and ancestral worshipers. In various places they have been chased away by other religious leaders with the intention of avoiding foreign religions. But the pioneers were very strong and took courage because God was with them.

Sometimes the centers of worship themselves become a challenge. In the minds of many people the building structure determines the true religion. For them a beautiful church equates a good religion while an “ugly” church equates a bad religion.

The Global Mission pioneers in Madagascar have been supported by the Mission office, private donors, and by donations to Global Mission. As a result many unentered areas have been reached, including minority groups. Temporary churches have been built and many people have either been baptized or are currently attending baptismal classes.

The Global Mission Pioneer initiative has been a golden opportunity for new graduates of Madagascar’s Adventist

University Zurcher. Having earned a theology degree, some are recruited to the Global Mission ranks to gain more practical experience before they are called into the ministry.

One of the dreams of most Global Mission pioneers in Madagascar is to build a primary school close to their chapels in order to enable children in the area to receive an Adventist education and come to know Jesus.

Thanks to your prayers and financial support of Global Mission, things are really happening for the glory of God in Madagascar. Please continue to remember the work of Global Mission and the pioneers who have committed their lives to reaching people here with the love of God.

Dear Sabbath School Leader,

May 1, 2013

Dear Sabbath School Leader,

This quarter we feature the South Pacific Division, which includes Australia, New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific south of the equator, including Cook Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and others.

The Challenges

Almost 37 million people live in this region, including more than 423,000 Adventists. That’s a ratio of one Adventist for nearly every 87 people. However, New Zealand and Australia have ratios of one Adventist for about every 400 people. The majority of Adventists live in other island groups, such as Fiji (one Adventist in 32 people), Papua New Guinea (one in 28), the Cook Islands (one in 19), Vanuatu (one in 14) and Solomon Islands (one in 13). The countries with the highest standard of living tend to have the smallest proportion of Adventists. This creates challenges, not just for reaching those who have not yet been reached, but for financing the work in the rest of the region.

While the ratio of Adventist to non-Adventist is high in many of the island nations, leaders have few resources to nourish their members. Children’s leaders have no lesson quarterlies, no felts, and no pictures to hold the children’s attention during Sabbath School and impress in their minds God’s eternal lessons.

The South Pacific Division is focusing this Thirteenth Sabbath Offering on reaching the people in the island nations of the division through three proven methods: providing medical clinics in isolated regions, audio Bibles and Bible lessons for adults and children on MP3 players (commonly called “God pods”), and 15,000 Bibles in either English or pidgin (the trade language of the island nations) for children, who often are the only members of their families who can read well and who will share God’s Word with their parents and extended families.

This quarter we can help reach even more people for Christ by giving a generous Thirteenth Sabbath Offering.

Yours for the kingdom,

Charlotte Ishkanian
