    A Film by John Madden Production Notes Synopsis Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… Filmed on location in Tel Aviv, the U.K., and Budapest, the espionage thriller The Debt is directed by Academy Award nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, is adapted from the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov [The Debt]. At the 2011 Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, The Debt was honoured with the Special Police [Jury] Prize. The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stephan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds of the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain [The Tree of Life, The Help], Marton Csokas [The Lord of the Rings, Dream House], and Sam Worthington [Avatar, Clash of the Titans]) tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. While Rachel found herself grappling with romantic feelings during the mission, the net around Vogel was tightened by using her as bait. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations that compel Rachel to take matters into her own hands.

    The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII­ understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt.

Rounding out the cast and playing the military wives are Emma Lowndes (Downton Abbey), Gaby French (Victoria), Lara Rossi (Robin Hood), Amy James-Kelly (Safe) and India Ria Amarteifio (Line of Duty). Co-written by BIFA award-winner Rachel Tunnard (Adult Life Skills) and award-winning writer Rosanne Flynn (Crossbones, Meconium) MILITARY WIVES is produced by Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh of 42 and Piers Tempest for Tempo Productions. Josh Varney is the executive producer for 42 and Emma Willis and Hana Carter for Twenty Twenty TV. Also, executive producing are Rene Besson, Orlando Wood, Jo Bamford, Josh Horsfield, Emma Berkofsky, Stephen Spence, Liz Gallacher, Hugo Grumbar, Tim Haslam, Peter Touche and Zygi Kamasa. MILITARY WIVES was shot on location for six weeks around London and Yorkshire at the end of 2018 and will be distributed by Lionsgate in the UK.     1 The TENORSAX of FRANK WELLINGTON WESS Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Sept. 9, 2020 2 Born: Kansas City, Missouri, Jan. 4, 1922 Died: Oct. 30, 2013 Introduction: Oslo Jazz Circle always loved the Basie orchestra, no matter what time, and of course we became familiar with Frank Wess’ fine tenorsax playing. My own real ear opener however was the Joe Turner session on Atlantic from 1956. Early history: First instrument altosax which he played in local band in Oklahoma. On tenor in Washington with Bill Baldwin and in the house band at Howard Theatre. On tour with Blanche Calloway and army service 1941-44. After discharge, with Billy Eckstine. Then with Eddie Heywood and Lucky Millinder. One year with Bull Moose Jackson. Back to Washington and studies on flute 1949. From June 1953 to August 1964 he was a member of Count Basie’s orchestra. Message: I have had to simplify the presentation of Count Basie sessions, it seemed to serve no purpose of going through all Chris Sheridan. However this means that many sessions with FW must have been omitted, and it is not unlikely that some of these will or have already appeared on CD. Also,I admit that it is not always easy to hear the difference between Frank Wess and Frank Foster, at least for my modest ears.
