Hinckley Forums provide University of Utah students and the surrounding community intimate access to and interaction with our nation’s leaders. Under the direction of Hinck- ley Institute assistant director Jayne Nelson, the Hinckley Institute hosts 65-75 forums each year in the newly renovated Hinckley Caucus Room. Partnerships with supporting Univer- sity of Utah colleges and departments, local radio and news stations, our generous donors, and the Sam Rich Program in International Politics ensure the continued success of the Hinckley Forums program. Patrick Miller looks at the state of the race between the three term time incumbent Pat Roberts and his Independent challenger, Greg Orman. He writes that a combination of poor campaigning, residency questions, and the withdrawal of the Democratic candidate from the ballot have come together to provide an unexpected challenge for Pat Roberts this midterm cycle. Ruby red Kansas has only elected Republican senators since 1938. Rarely since have GOP Senate nominees won less than 60 percent of the vote. Polling shows that 47 percent of Kansans identify as or lean Republican. That advantage should carry most Republicans to easy victory. Not so for three time incumbent Pat Roberts in 2014. Roberts’s biggest problem is himself, and his personal flaws have jeopardized not just a safe Republican Senate seat but also his party’s chances at a Senate takeover. Roberts was first elected to Congress in 1980. A center-right conservative, his politics and style now look timidly moderate compared to the firebrands currently favored by the Tea Party. He has morphed from Midwestern legislator focused on agriculture interests to Senate Republican leader on intelligence issues. -

U.S. Bancorp’s Political Contributions Policy requires that all contributions from U.S. Bancorp’s PACs and the corporation be compiled and published semi-annually in a report that is made publicly available on its corporate website. This report and the Political Contributions Policy are reviewed by the Community Reinvestment and Public Policy Committee of the U.S. Bancorp Board of Directors. The U.S. Bancorp Political Participation Program Board of Directors is comprised of no more than 11 senior leaders from across U.S. Bancorp’s retail footprint, which reviews and approves all PAC contributions on a quarterly basis. Canadian Political Science Review Vol. 9, No. 1, 2015, 14-27 Going Negative: Campaigning in Canadian Provinces Alex Marland Department of Political Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland – Email address: [email protected] Abstract The study of political communication in Canada’s provinces suffers from an absence of pan-Canadian information. This descriptive article bridges the gap by documenting some observable trends. It submits that negative advertising is more intense in larger provinces than in smaller jurisdictions. Permanent campaigning is the new normal as electioneering ramps up in anticipation of a fixed date election. Provincial parties and citizens avail themselves of new technology by communicating with digital video, which is not subject to the same financial, technical, content or regulatory constraints as television. Similarities of political communication across Canada are noted, including copycatting of federal-level practices. Résumé: Les études en communication politique au Canada souffrent de l’absence d’observations pancanadiennes. Cet article descriptif comble cette lacune en documentant les tendances observables.
