AACTA Announces Short Film Nominees for the 4Th AACTA Awards

AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY ANNOUNCES FIRST NOMINEES FOR 4TH AACTA AWARDS The countdown to Australia’s top screen Awards has officially started, with the first nominees for the 4th Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards announced today. Nominees were announced in the Best Short Animation and Best Short Fiction Film categories for the 4th AACTA Awards, which will also see Australia’s best film, television and documentaries awarded in Sydney in January 2015. Feature Films in Competition and nominees for the AACTA Award for Best Feature Length Documentary for the 4th AACTA Awards will be announced in the coming weeks, and all Feature Film, Television and the remaining Documentary nominees will be announced later in 2014. Robertino Zambrano, Melissa Johnston • The Video Dating Tape of Desmondo Ray, Aged 33 & 3/4. Steve Baker This year’s Best Short Animation nominees arrive at the AACTA Awards with a host of Festival screenings behind them, both national and international. The Video Dating Tape of Desmondo Ray, Aged 33 & 3/4, which screened at SXSW 2014 and St Kilda Film Festival 2014, is by writer-director Steve Baker, a previous Tropfest and AFI Award winner. This darkly funny short film portrays Raymond, a loner with a penchant for peeing in the rain, as a likeable, if not likely, dating prospect. Also funny and touching is Love In The Time Of March Madness - a ‘tall short’ about a 6’4” woman whose success on the basketball court is at odds with her luck in love. -

George Souris MP Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing Minister for the Arts MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 3 December SYDNEY’S AACTA AWARDS TO STAY IN NSW NSW has again demonstrated the State’s pre-eminence in the creative arts and screen and television production industry by renewing the rights to host Australia’s most prestigious screen awards for another three years. Minister for the Arts, George Souris, today announced that Sydney would host the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards at least until 2017. The welcomed announcement came ahead of the 3rd AACTA Awards nominations event in Sydney this afternoon. “The AACTA Awards is a key creative industries event on the Sydney and NSW Events Calendar, playing a leading role in reinforcing NSW’s position as the creative services capital of Australia and the creative hub of the Asia Pacific Region and continues a three-year partnership, which included the formation of AACTA, began in 2011. “NSW is the hub of film and television production in Australia, with more than half of national screen businesses, almost 60 per cent of all Australians employed in the screen production industry and 40 per cent of Australia’s creative industries workforce based here. “Last year, NSW film and television businesses generated $570 million or 81 per cent, of all film and television drama production in Australia, with $430 million spent on drama productions filmed here. “I am delighted the AACTA Awards will again join our stable of key creative industries events supported by the NSW Government including Vivid Sydney, the ARIA Awards, Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week Australia, Sydney Film Festival and The Helpmann Awards.“ Mr Souris also congratulated the AACTA nominees announced at a ceremony in Sydney today. -

MEDIA RELEASE Strictly embargoed until 12.01am on Tuesday 22 November 2016 Culture Club announced alongside Jessica Mauboy, Dami Im and Paul Kelly for 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel In the lead up to Australia’s biggest film and television Awards, the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) has announced that iconic UK pop group Culture Club will be performing at the 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel, alongside Australian artists Paul Kelly, Jessica Mauboy and Dami Im like you’ve never seen her before. Culture Club’s performance at the Awards Ceremony will be their only televised performance and will feature the original band line up: singer Boy George, guitarist and keyboardist Roy Hay, bassist Mikey Craig and drummer Jon Moss. Culture Club are returning to Australia for an Encore Tour in mid- December, which will see them perform in some capital cities and several winery shows. Australia’s love affair with Culture Club continues and their June tour saw them sell out shows and perform to rave reviews. Boy George said he was “Thrilled to be coming back to Australia and to be performing at Australia’s biggest celebration of film and television.” The Grammy Award winning group will bring their own unique style and performance to the AACTA Awards. AACTA President Geoffrey Rush and NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts, George Souris, today launched the 3rd AACTA Awards season by announcing the 2014 Awards will be held over two major events this summer in Sydney. The AACTA Awards Luncheon presented by Deluxe will be held on Tuesday 28 January 2014 followed by the AACTA Awards Ceremony & Official After Party, which will be held two days later on Thursday 30 January 2014. Geoffrey Rush and Minister Souris also announced Network Ten as the Awards telecast partner. The positive reception and expanded audience for the broadcast of the 2nd AACTA Awards sees the national broadcast of the 3rd AACTA Awards set to air at the earlier time slot of 8.30pm Thursday 30 January 2014. Geoffrey Rush said, “I am delighted to launch the 3rd AACTA Awards season, which coincides with the commencement of the AACTA Awards Screenings program. Press Release – Strictly Embargoed until Thursday 16 May 2013 Australian Academy Calls for AACTA Awards Entrants, Announces New Television Awards The search is on for Australia’s most outstanding film and television performers, practitioners and productions, with the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today calling for entries and jurors for the 3rd AACTA Awards. The 3rd AACTA Awards will be held in January 2014 in Sydney. REVIEW OF THE AACTA AWARDS In February 2013, AACTA announced a review of its current Awards based on: a mandate to work with Guild representatives to identify industry needs; the findings of AACTA’s recent Additional Awards Campaign Survey; and AACTA’s current financial and resource challenges (resulting from the loss of its naming rights sponsor, and the need for greater industry support). Subsequently, AACTA and Guild representatives formed a group to discuss and agree which Awards could and should be presented at the 3rd AACTA Awards in Sydney in January 2014. AACTA today announces that a total of 40 AACTA Awards will be bestowed, just one less than at the 2nd AACTA Awards. Feature film Awards remain unchanged (14 AACTA Awards), six new television screen craft Awards have been introduced (with a total of 20 television awards), three dedicated documentary Awards will be bestowed (with many documentary entries able to enter into the slate of new television craft Awards), and two short film categories will be awarded. The AACTA Raymond Longford Award, and the Byron Kennedy Award will be presented as usual, and an Audience Choice Award will be announced later in the year. -

Media Release – Strictly embargoed until 9am Sunday 11 January 2015 Australian Academy announces Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman as hosts of the 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman as the hosts of the 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony, which will be held in Sydney at The Star Event Centre and broadcast on Network Ten on Thursday 29 January 2015. Both performers have long-standing connections with the AACTA Awards and the AFI Awards which preceded the AACTAs. In addition to her role as AFI | AACTA Ambassador, which she has held since 2001, Cate Blanchett holds four AFI Awards, and an AACTA International Award for her role in Blue Jasmine, for which she also received a BAFTA and an Oscar earlier this year (marking her second Oscar). Blanchett has also presented at many AFI and AACTA Awards Ceremonies, including at the 2nd AACTA Awards where she co-presented the AACTA Award for Best Film in a moving tribute with fellow AFI and Oscar winners, AACTA President Geoffrey Rush, and Russell Crowe, who hosted the 2nd AACTA Awards. Deborah Mailman has won four Awards from the AFI and AACTA for her performances across film and television, including for her role in the highly popular and industry acclaimed Offspring. The 2nd AACTA Awards saw Mailman receive a nomination for Mental, and an AACTA Award win for her lead role in The Sapphires. Mailman has also regularly attended and presented at the AFI and AACTA Awards, and her performance with the cast and original Sapphires at the 2nd AACTA Awards was a highlight of the broadcast. -
Paul Hogan to Be Awarded Australia's Highest Screen Accolade
MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 6 December 2016 Paul Hogan to be awarded Australia’s highest screen accolade The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced Australian screen icon Paul Hogan AM as this year’s recipient of the prestigious AACTA Longford Lyell Award. First presented in 1968, the Longford Lyell Award honours Australian film pioneer Raymond Longford and his partner in filmmaking and life, Lottie Lyell. The Award is the highest honour that the Australian Academy can bestow upon an individual and recognises a person who has made a truly outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Australia’s screen environment and culture. In honour of his outstanding contribution to the Australian screen industry, the Longford Lyell Award will be presented to Paul Hogan at the 6th AACTA Awards Ceremony presented by Foxtel in Sydney on Wednesday 7 December 2016, televised on Channel 7 at 8.30pm. The presentation will celebrate and honour Paul’s 45 year career, and will feature tributes from Shane Jacobson, Michael Caton, former Tourism Minister John Brown, Peter Faiman, Dave Hughes, Adam Hills, Ernie Dingo and THE PAUL HOGAN SHOW co-star Delvene Delaney. HONOURING PAUL HOGAN Paul Hogan’s career began when he was working as a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and, on a dare, auditioned on talent contest NEW FACES. Following a recurring role on A CURRENT AFFAIR in the early 1970’s, THE PAUL HOGAN SHOW was born – a hugely popular sketch comedy program which he produced, co-wrote and starred in from 1973 to 1984. He became well known internationally for his work on commercials in the 1980’s, including British advertisements for Foster’s Lager and his unparalleled ‘Come and say G’Day’ campaign with the Australian Tourist Commission, which sky-rocketed Australia to a must-see destination and which coined the iconic phrase “I’ll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie for you.” In 1985, Paul was awarded Australian of the Year and inducted into the Order of Australia for service to tourism and entertainment. -
First Winners of the 6Th AACTA Awards Presented by Foxtel Announced at Industry Luncheon in Sydney
MEDIA RELEASE Monday 5 December First winners of the 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel announced at Industry Luncheon in Sydney The Australian screen industry today celebrated the best achievements in screen craft excellence of the past year at the 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel | Industry Luncheon presented by Blue Post. Thirty-Three Awards were presented during the event, held at The Star Event Centre in Sydney, recognising the talent and skill of practitioners working across: feature film, television, documentary, and short film. Australian comedians Kitty Flanagan and Tom Gleeson hosted the laughter-filled luncheon, which included a special musical performance from Swing on This. AACTA President Geoffrey Rush, Danielle Cormack, Julia Zemiro, Darren Gilshenan, Rachael Blake, Steve Le Marquand and Matilda Brown joined Kitty and Tom on stage to present the thirty-three Awards. The remainder of this year’s Award recipients will be announced at the 6th AACTA Awards Ceremony presented by Foxtel, at The Star Event Centre in Sydney on Wednesday 7 December, telecast at 8.30pm on Channel 7. FEATURE FILM WWII drama HACKSAW RIDGE led the Awards count, winning four out of a possible six nominations at today’s Industry Luncheon. Oscar and BAFTA nominee John Gilbert received his first AACTA Award, for Best Editing. The AACTA Award for Best Production Design was awarded to Barry Robison, best known for his work on X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER. The AACTA Award for Best Cinematography went to Simon Duggan ACS, who previously won the category at the 3rd AACTA Awards for THE GREAT GATSBY. -

MEDIA RELEASE Strictly embargoed until 12:01am Thursday 27 October 2016 Australian Academy announces Nominees and a new Presenting Partner for the 6th AACTA Awards Anticipation surrounding the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards increased today with the announcement of the Nominees for the 6th AACTA Awards and new Presenting Partner, Foxtel. Leading the nominations is Mel Gibson’s highly-anticipated return to directing, HACKSAW RIDGE, with 13 nominations, followed closely by THE DAUGHTER with 10 nominations. In television, the most nominated productions are Mini Series’ THE BEAUTIFUL LIE (ABC), with nine nominations, and THE KETTERING INCIDENT (Foxtel – Showcase) with eight. “This year, over 300 of Australia’s finest individual practitioners, from over 90 productions, are competing for a total of 50 Awards; this makes the 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel our biggest Awards yet,” said AFI | AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella. “The Nominees announced today showcase the tremendous quality and diversity of productions that the Australian screen industry continues to create. Media Release – Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Strictly embargoed until 4.30pm Tuesday 3 December 2013 Australian Academy announces 3rd AACTA Awards Nominees, renewed partnerships with Destination NSW and The Star, and new partners Foxtel and Audi Today the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) announced the names of the 3rd AACTA Awards nominees, across 39 Award categories, spanning 50 productions and encompassing feature film, television and documentary projects. The exciting announcement was made at 3.30pm at The Star Event Centre in Sydney and hosted by award winning actor/writer Rob Carlton featuring a nomination read by actor Rodger Corser and actor/director Gracie Otto. Leading the way with a total of 14 nominations is Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel THE GREAT GATSBY, closely followed by THE ROCKET with 12 nominations. This independent film production has been winning hearts across the globe, as well as the Best First Feature Award at the Berlinale and Best Narrative Feature Award at Tribeca. TOP OF THE LAKE, Jane Campion’s mysterious and textural television miniseries, shot on location in New Zealand, received a total of 10 nominations.
