As a result, it has led to a massive migration of population to other developed countries. This phenomenon is also characteristic for Romania. At the same time, the technological development has a massive impact on the process of organizing the society and the evolution of the society, both the evolution of biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, branches in the field of chemistry, biochemistry and digitization, which have impact on the development or underdevelopment of the areas in poverty and underdevelopment. economic, but at the same time they will be able to make an essential contribution to the local rural development and to the creation of new job opportunities for both young people and specialists from different branches, as well as for vulnerable groups of population from the rural area. PART 1 OUTLINE OF THE STUDY The Study on Mater Plan for Hazardous Waste Management in Romania Final Report Japan International Cooperation Agency Volume 5 Summary PART 1 OUTLINE OF THE STUDY 1. Study Background Japan International Cooperation Agency decided to conduct the Study on “Master Plan for Hazardous Waste Management in Romania” in response to the request of the Government of Romania. In 2001, JICA conducted a baseline study using Environmental Resources Management (ERM), a UK consulting firm. In November 2001, JICA and the Ministry of Waters and Environmental Protection (MWEP) of Romania have signed the Scope of Work and Minutes of Meeting for the Study. In February 2002, JICA commenced the Study by forming a JICA Study Team comprising of two Japanese consulting firms. In general, Romanian hazardous waste management is poor and backward. Main problems include: 1) Low level of awareness on the part of citizens and industry about possible impacts of hazardous waste on health and environment. 2) There are almost no treatment and disposal facilities dedicated for hazardous waste. 3) Low level of application of industrial pollution prevention, control (IPPC) and cleaner production (CP). 4) Low level of the government capacity for law enforcement and poor information system 5) Lack of steady and reliable implementation plan of EU directives in spite of vigorous transposition of the directives. 6) Difficulty for industrial enterprises to acquire funds for industrial and environmental upgrading. 2. Study Objective The Study Objective is: • To strengthen hazardous waste management system in Romania at both governmental and private sector levels. Major focuses of the Study is: • To strengthen the government organizations, as well as to strengthen the awareness of the private sectors that generates hazardous waste. -

About Romania Romania (Romanian: România, IPA: [ro.mɨni.a]) is a country in Southeastern Europe sited in a historic region that dates back to antiquity. It shares border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. Romania has a stretch of sea coast along the Black Sea. It is located roughly in the lower basin of the Danube and almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. Romania is a parliamentary unitary state. As a nation-state, the country was formed by the merging of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859 and it gained recognition of its independence in 1878. Later, in 1918, they were joined by Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia. At the end of World War II, parts of its territories (roughly the present day Moldova) were occupied by USSR and Romania became a member of Warsaw Pact. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Romania started a series of political and economic reforms that peaked with Romania joining the European Union. Romania has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 2007, and has the ninth largest territory in the EU and with 22 million people [1] it has the 7th largest population among the EU member states. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest (Romanian: Bucureşti /bu.kureʃtʲ/ (help·info)), the sixth largest city in the EU with almost 2 million people. In 2007, Sibiu, a large city in Transylvania, was chosen as European Capital of Culture.[2] Romania joined NATO on March 29, 2004, and is also a member of the Latin Union, of the Francophonie and of OSCE. -

LIFE BY THE IMPERIAL ROAD - FRONTIER IDENTITIES Roman Villa and Settlement Excavation and Survey IDENTITY AND WEALTH: ROMAN PROVINCIAL LANDSCAPE STRATEGIES Rapolt, Transylvania, Romania June 7 - July 4; July 20 - August 1, 2020 During the Roman colonial occupation, southern Transylvania shows a very dynamic and intensive synthesis of Roman provincial life, where a multitude of processes of colonization and creolization take place side by side. Prior to the Roman conquest of 102AD, it was also the most densely populated region of the Dacian Kingdoms. Our project seeks to explore the integration of all the structural provincial elements present along the main Roman axes of communication and transport. Our research area is in the immediate proximity of both the imperial road and the Mures River, the extremely important gold deposits of the Carpathian Gold Moutains, and the political and military centers of Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana and Apulum. We will continue the excavation of the well preserved structures, including a villa rustica of palatial size, identified during our 2013-2019 field seasons. Our 2020 excavation and survey will aim at understanding the importance and impact of the proximity of the main axis of movement, communication and commerce on the Roman provincial rural life, and its evolution through time, as well as the local processes of identity creation. Our participants will participate to the villa excavation, geochemical and geophysical survey, Duration: 4 week sessions STP survey and laboratory analysis. Due to the mining activity of ore deposits for more than 2000 years, in Romania there are over 550 tailings dumps, covering an area of approximately 800 ha and storing over 200 million cubic meters of tailings and 54 tailings ponds, which covers an area of almost 1350 ha and stores over 350 million m3 of waste. Mining activities create a potential impact on the environment, both during exploitation and in the years after mine closure. Underground exploitation presents the risk of collapsing galleries and surface overflowing and involves the dislocation of a large amount of rocks. Quarrying is one of the most common forms of mineral extraction, being particularly harmful to the environment, as strategic minerals are often available in low concentrations, which increases the amount of ore extracted. Althou8h mininB activities are currently stopped in most areas, the potential risk of environmental contamination exists due to the huge quantities of tailings in the tailings ponds and the tailinBs dumps very close to the watercourses. These are permanent sources of pollution for surface and groundwater, soil and air in the area (Fig. 1). The oxidation of sulphide minerals led to the removal of soluble metal ions from the mineralization found in mining related wastes under the effect of water. -

Caragiale" National College, Bucharest, Romania e-mail: [email protected] Abstract In order to assess the vulnerability of communities to extreme hydrometeorological phenomena, observations on their onset and development should aim at quantifying intensity and frequency, also establishing and foreseeing possible damage. The present study focuses on a few atmospheric phenomena registered in the Alba Iulia – Turda Depression over the 2002-2006 interval, given that the damage incurred involved aspects of risk. Hazardous atmospheric phenomena, heavy rainfall in the main, led to other natural risks affecting both the environment and the socio-economic activity. Apart from atmospheric causes, the risk for other natural events are related to local particularities, e.g. lithological structure (sandy-clay substrate), landform (slopes and highly fragmented relief) and soils (little forestland and grassland due to human pressure – dominantly arable land and numerous human settlements). Houses and annexes, as well as socio-economic constructions were damaged, lots of animals and poultry perished, national, county, communal and forester's roads, bridges and foot-bridges were washed away or disaffected, crops were flooded, trees were brought to the ground, electrical and telephone networks were destroyed. Heavily affected were the road infrastructure, the hydroelectrical constructions the socio- economic units, the electrical and telephone networks and agriculture generally. The number of catastrophic situations, unusually high in 2005, represented 44% of all the interventions made over the past ten years to limit and remove flood effects. Negative hydrometeorological phenomena were found to occur mainly in summer, especially in June and July when torrential rains and floods are common. -
