Art on a Postcard has been delighted to morph into Art on a Ukulele for the last few months. Mick Rooney RA approached me in early 2016 with the idea of creating an orchestra of painted ukuleles. Mick has a wonderfully rich imagination and a poet’s soul so I was immediately gripped by his colourful description of the direction he saw the project taking. Our first call was Pete Howlett, the UKs foremost independent ukulele manufacturer. With Pete on board we were taken seriously by the ukulele community, which is immense, and we were in a position to talk the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (UOGB). We wrote and spoke to lots of artists and had long lunches with Jodie Cartwright and George Hinchliffe from the UOGB. After a lot of work and effort from a great many people we have arrived at the point where the ukuleles are gloriously painted and ready to be played. Along the way, we have been met with such generosity of spirit. I am so grateful to all of the artists who have contributed to this project and taken as much care with their ukuleles as they would their own gallery work. We have a broad variety of techniques and styles and wonderful pieces of art. I am so incredibly proud of this project and grateful to everyone who has made it possible and are listed below.

With many thanks

Gemma Peppé (Director of Art on a Postcard)

Thank you to Charles Anthony Walsh for making the whole project possible. John Burns from Derwent London. Mick Rooney RA for his wonderful mind and ideas. Pete Howlett for his beautiful suite of ukuleles and the enthusiasm he showed for the project. Mike Upton from Kala Brand. Sarah Long, Caroline Ryle-Hodges and Kinga Grof at Long and Ryle. Paul Theroux: The Ukulele

The beauty of a ukulele in Hawaii is that the sweet plinking of its strings never drowns out the other music of the islands; it harmonizes with the slosh of waves on sand, the rattle the palm fronds, the sigh of iron woods in the Trade Winds. The uke - not ancient here – was first remarked upon on a particular day, Sept 3, 1879. A British clipper ship, the Ravenscrag, had recently arrived from Madeira, 12,000 miles away. When the newly arrived passengers began busking on Honolulu street corners, the Hawaiian Gazette wrote that day of the “strange instruments, which are a kind of cross between a guitar and a banjo, but which produce very sweet music in the hands of the Portuguese minstrels.” Among the new immigrants, who had come from their impoverished island to prosperous sugar-growing Hawaii to cut cane, were three men who ended up making a living fashioning a new instrument, combining the virtues of an instrument they call a machete with a similar but much smaller Portuguese rajao. This new creature, now four strings, and made of local, 7brilliantly flamed and strong koa wood, was named ukulele, the word for jumping flea. The ukulele’s greatest boost was that it was loved by the young king, David Kalakaua (1836-91), who learned to play it and sing. We know this from R. L. Stevenson, who feasted with the king, whom he called “a too convivial sovereign” (“a bottle of fizz is like a glass of sherry to him”). Stevenson’s step-daughter, Belle Strong wrote in her memoir This Life I’ve Loved, that his majesty usually strummed and crooned his favorite, Sweet Lei-lei-hua, but once, in his cups “he electrified us” by singing, Hoky Poky winky wum How do you like your taters done? Boiled or with their jackets on? Sang the King of the Sandwich Islands.

The heroes of ukulele are Herb Ota, Jake Shimabukuro, and Israel Kamakawiwo ole - Brudda Iz ,who a giant at 700 pounds, strummed his uke – tiny in his hands – and sang like an angel. In his house in Maui, George Harrison, played and sang to friends. The small simple instrument of such versatility, gives life to a gathering. Virtually every family I know in Hawaii owns a ukulele (mine was made by a Madeira descendent, David Gomes, in Kapaau on the Big Island.) At some point in a party, someone picks up a ukulele and plays – well or badly – an island ballad, a rude (kolohe) song, a teasing tune, or something romantic, while the wind rattles the palms.

“Touch me. Play me”

Nearly all the old sing books found in the piano stool in granny’s best room had the four-stringed notation shaped chords for the ukulele above the piano parts. I don't remember seeing a ukulele in the houses of friends and relatives. There was a mandolin, a banjo and a steel slide guitar. At Saturday morning pictures a buck toothed man would fill the screen playing a banjolele. But Laurel and Hardy kept the faith. From Portugal to the Azores and Madeira mariners carried this pocket-sized instrument to Hawaii, The USA, Europe and to all points of the compass. By the commencement of hostilities in 1939 it seemed only the song books alone held the ukulele chords but the instrument had been banished to the attic. In the Post War conditions of rationing the post prandial Sunday dinner might be digested accompanied by an uncle or two who had survived The Somme and Paschendael with “Pack up Your Troubles”,”Tipperary”, “Follow the Van”, and “The Rose of Tralee”. The instrument of youth was the guitar. My first was acquired in Valencia on a trip with mum after the death of dad. At Junior Art School 1957-1959 (For clever children who had failed the 11+exam but who seemed artistically gifted) one or two saw the possibilities in a future with Rock and Roll. Jeff Beck came to the school now and then but became an early legend by mostly playing truant. Later on, the art school toilets resounded to the rehearsals of “Trad Jazz” and rhythm and blues groups. A couple of evenings a week there was jazz at The Crown - Morden, the interval was the one- man band of Jesse Fuller (The composer of “San Francisco Bay”), and The Red Lion - Sutton, to hear The Rolling Stones. Entrance: Two and six, that is 12.5p. The years roll by and a guitar or two stands in the corner of a million homes. Every so often a ukulele appears - the instrument of choice for the more discerning eccentric star. But this humble instrument is now proliferating everywhere. It is the national adopted instrument in the music classrooms of Canada. And schools throughout the world are playing and performing concerts with their pupils. Everywhere now, clubs, groups and bands practice and perform. Where I am in West Oxfordshire the players discuss with knowing skill about the make and quality of the instrument. The UOGB performing for over Thirty-One years have promoted the ukulele to a high level of composition. Arrangement originality and virtuosity. By degrees Opera and Orchestral Symphonies come into the canon. Yet the ukulele remains a simple resonant stringed box available to all. Even exquisitely decorated by extraordinary artists it says “Touch me. Play me!” MR Sept 2017 Ewbanks Ukulele pages.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2017 14:57 Page 6

THE HEPATITIS TRUST

The Hepatitis C Trust is delighted to be the beneficiary of this wonderful project because we are on a mission. That mission is to eliminate hepatitis C in the UK. We know we can do it because there are now new treatments available that can essentially cure everyone. All we need to do is find the 100,000 people who have hepatitis C but don’t know it and give them the treatment, while redoubling our efforts at prevention. This is particularly pressing because many of those still undiagnosed were infected decades ago and may already have advanced liver disease. If we don’t find them, they will die. If we do, we’ll cure them. And consign hepatitis C to history. We have committed to doing that by 2030 at the latest and we hope much earlier. Then we will close down – because we will no longer be needed. Inevitably to make this happen we need resources. So we are very grateful to everyone involved in this project, particularly Mick Rooney, whose idea it has been, but also to all the artists who have created these masterpieces and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain who played them so beautifully. We are also of course grateful to all of you who are intending to bid on these extraordinary instruments. Not only will you be getting a unique work of art but you will also be helping to raise money for a unique mission. The opportunity to eliminate a life-threatening disease is as rare as these beautiful ukuleles.

Charles Gore CEO Hepatitis C Trust

THE UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is very happy to be associated with the Hepatitis C Trust and Charles Gore - Chief Executive and his team, with their campaign to eliminate Hepatitis C in the UK. It has been a pleasure to work with Mick Rooney RA and Gemma Peppe, who have been “instrumental” in bringing the Art on a Ukulele project forward. The project resonated with the orchestra on many levels. As seems to be a tradition with many rock and pop musicians, various members of The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain attended art school or had art school connections. The concept for the orchestra grew in the early 80’s while various members were art students in Leeds. The Orchestra has many associates who are artists and are pleased to find the esteemed Royal Academicians painting ukuleles. In the spirit of punk, the Orchestra deliberately chose the ukulele due it’s lack of pretension and it’s humble origin. Since then it has championed the ukulele as an inclusive instrument and firmly believes that all ukuleles should be played and so in that tradition the Orchestra is glad to play these marvellous instruments, demonstrating that they are real ukuleles as well as being art objects as musical instruments and paintings. 6 Ewbanks Ukulele pages.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2017 14:57 Page 7

The hand-made instruments are provided by instrument maker Pete Howlett, who is an old friend of the Orchestra. He once paid the orchestra with instruments rather than cash for a performance at what was then Pete’s own venue in Wales. They have followed the more customary route since then and have purchased several instruments from Pete which they use in performance. In addition to the paddle ukuleles made by Pete, there are also Kala ukuleles painted. The founder of Kala, Mike Upton is also a friend and associate, who has provided the orchestra with many ukuleles over the years. Mike often points out that the Orchestra makes it all look easy and fun, thus stimulating sales of ukuleles! These instruments are rare, extremely valuable, unique, inimitable, whimsical, thought provoking, amusing and playable. Take care not to scratch the paintwork off! Her sculptural practice combines the interrelated and antagonistic worlds of fine art and craft. She carefully creates pieces from a vast array of materials, adopting ready-made elements which are freely assembled, as well as incorporating modelling, carving, painting and other finishes to her works. Her sculptures often take on doll-like forms which approach the immediacy of ordinary figurative playthings, and thereby challenge the art-worlds customary and mediated relationship between the viewer and the artwork. In 2014 Cathie was elected a Royal Academician, and was awarded the Sunny Dupree Award for her work Reclining Doll. In 2016, she became the Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools. Her work is held in the collections of the Deste Foundation (Athens), Manchester City Art Gallery and the David Roberts Collection. Lot 6 Ramiro Fernandez Saus (Spanish, b.1961) Title: ‘Untitled’ Medium: Oil Ukulele: Boat Paddle Concert Tigers, monkeys, parrots and sailors remain among Ramiros cast of characters, and also travel further afield on sea voyages to exotic lands, riding blue whales and writing love letters in ship cabins. Ramiro captures the imaginative thrill of discovering unexplored lands and encountering the mysterious and outlandish. Even within his interiors, patterned wallpapers become jungles. It is this subject matter that the distinguished painter Craigie Aitchison loved. The two artists were great friends until Craigies death in 2009. Just two weeks before he died Craigie visited Ramiro exhibition at Long and Ryle. In the last two decades Ramiro Fernandez Saus has become one of the most well-known Spanish artists of his generation. In 2005, he was given a retrospective at the Museum of Sabadell and his works are in the collections of the Reine Sofia in Madrid, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna. In 2007, he had a solo exhibition at the Naughton Gallery,Queens University, Belfast. In 2009, a series of works based on the Opera House were exhibited at Glynedbourne. The Boat Paddle Ukuleles are 59cm in length and have been hand crafted by Pete Howlett, the UKs sole manufacturer. A Statement from Pete Howlett: ‘I am an Artisan Craftsman who has been building fine ukuleles from sustainable woods since 1994. The boat paddle design is a reimagining of a fun ukulele manufactured in America at the height of the ukulele craze in the 1930s. I chose this dynamic design for the artists because I felt it offered them greater potential than the traditional figure 8 body shape. I am delighted that this has been realised in all 8 pieces. As a hepatitis survivor, I am honoured to be associated with this project.’

Lot 9 Anne Desmet RA (British, b.1964) Title: ‘Tudor Rhythms’ Medium: Lithograph, paper college Ukulele: Kala Tenor Artist statement: ‘It is not a painting as I am not a painter. It takes the form of a paper collage of many details of a recent lithograph of mine, which was itself a development of a wood engraved print. Both of these prints were made in 2016 and are images of the very elaborate barley-sugar-like Tudor chimneys at Eton College, where I was artist-in-residence last year. The original wood engraving brings together a collection of these chimneys into one invented composition. The lithograph started its life as a computer-assisted collage of details from this engraving repeated and re-scaled to create a forest that resembled trees but which was actually composed of numerous of these twisting, writhing brick chimneys. I chose to collage details of this lithograph onto the ukulele because the twirling, joyous, exuberant forms of those chimneys put me in mind of rhythms in music and, in the finished piece, the neck of the instrument starts to look a bit like an enormous chimney/tree and is thus part of the composition. Also, just as the lithograph was about one set of objects (namely man-made chimneys also acting as trees), the collaged ukulele would be a functional musical instrument also being an art object, so I felt that there existed interesting parallel sets of ideas to play with about one set of images that can suggest something entirely different or about an object that can be transformed into something else with different associations.’ The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. A Statement from Mike Upton: ‘Mick Rooney contacted me some months ago to let me know of the Art on a Ukulele project benefiting the Hep C Trust and I was all-in with the idea. I was truly blown away when recently Mick sent over shots of all of the ukes done up so beautifully by all of these wonderful artists. Lot 11 David Shillinglaw (British, b.1982) Title: ‘Untitled’ Ukulele: Kala Concert David Shillinglaw (British, b.1982), is a London-based artist born to British parents in Saudi Arabia. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2002 he has exhibited in galleries in Japan, China, The Gambia, Holland and key cities such as NY, London, Berlin and Istanbul.Shillinglaws work moves between street and studio, from small handmade book, to paintings on canvas, and large scale wall murals. He has also applied his fine art practice to a number of other contexts, which range from theatre set designs, to album cover designs. Past commissions include illustrations for The British Council Annual Report, murals for Converse and The Dulwich Picture House and a limited edition bag design for Agnes b. “David is a mind adventurer, where the left half of the brain explores the right one. Unanswered, impulsive, instinctive and restless - David doesnt paint or draw, he creates time. Evident in all his work is that David Shillinglaw is not afraid to humanise his art. He incorporates the perceptual concern of his journey as a man with his own sense of humour. The result is a powerful and fresh interpretation of everyday reality. His art has the appeal of Pop but a friendly, subtle, self-effacing Pop that presents the ordinary and delights the viewer when he shows that you have your best conversation with yourself.” - Jaybo Monk The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. Lot 12 Eugenie Vronskaya (Russian, b.1966) Title: ‘Mousai of the North’ Medium: Oil on gesso Ukulele: Kala concert Eugenie Vronskaya, Russian born artist currently living and working in The Highlands of Scotland. Eugenie studied icon paintings from an early age. It is still the biggest influence in her work. She attended Krasnopresnenskaya School of Art and a Fine Art University in Moscow. In 1989 Vronskaya arrived to UK and in 1991 she became the first Russian Student ever attending MA at the Royal College of Art. Vronskaya was invited by Sir Anthony Caro to participate in the International Triangle Workshop in New York State USA and subsequently was involved in running a number of Triangle International workshops in Africa (Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana). I met Eugenie Vronskaya a couple of years ago, when she arrived at Pine Plane, New York State from Russia. She had come to participate in the work shop for painters and sculptors; undoubted she has overcome all sorts of difficulties to get there. I was struck at that time by her strength of purpose. Since then I have followed her work and seen it change and grow. The drawing within the painting has been allowed a greater rein. England seems to suit Eugenie and I believe she will fulfil her promise. She is an artist; she has the touch, the determination and the temperament - Sir Anthony Caro. Vronskaya was a winner of the Visa international Bursary which enable her to complete MA at the RCA. She worked and exhibited in London, Paris, Denmark, America, Russia and USA. Artist statement: ‘I was mostly responding to the form of the instrument and its main purpose to create a sound, music therefore - MOUSAI.’ The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. Lot 13 George Underwood (British, b.1947) Title: ‘You Can Ukulele Tattoo’ Medium: Oil Ukulele: Kala Concert George Underwood was born in 1947. George joined Beckenham Art School in 1963. At art school George Underwood became interested in music. As a result he pursued a career in the music world. Along with lifelong friend David Bowie he made one record (The King Bees) and also a solo record under the name Calvin James. After deciding that the music business was not for him, George returned to art studies and then worked in design studios as an illustrator. Initially he specialised in fantasy, horror and science fiction book covers. Many of George Underwood’s colleagues in the music business asked him to do various art works for them. This led to George becoming a freelance artist. Art work for the first T Rex album and later David Bowies Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust album covers established him as a leading and creative art illustrator. Over this period George produced literally hundreds of book covers, LP and CD covers, advertisements, portraits and drawings. At the start of the 1970s George Underwood started painting in oils. His paintings were influenced at first by the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism artists which included Ernst Fuchs, Rudolph Hausner and Eric Brauer. George regarded them as contemporary visionaries like Bruegel and Bosch. He was fascinated by their imaginative visions. George Underwood paintings are held in many private art collections. One of his art collectors, David Bowie, said: George has, over the years, refined his work to the point where I would put him among the top figurative painters coming out of the UK right now. Theres a sublime isolation surrounding his subjects that really touches the viewer, the figures being both heroic and vulnerable simultaneously. Theres a timeless element in the choice of subject matter that overlaps with the mythical world of Odd Nerdrum, say. Now that a huge shift to painting is taking place, I would expect to see Georges name pushed further and further to the front. The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. Lot 14 Jock McFadyen RA (British, b.1950) Title: ‘Untitled’ Medium: Oil Ukulele: Kala Concert As a teenager Jock McFadyen RA (British, b.1950) attended Saturday morning classes at Glasgow School of Art. In 1966, at the age of 15, he moved to England and was educated at Chelsea School of Art gaining his BA in 1976 and MA in 1977. He also taught one day a week at the Slade School of Art between 1980 and 2005. In 1981 McFadyen was appointed Artist in Residence at the National Gallery in London. His paintings from the early eighties were populated by the waifs and stays of pre Canary Wharf London, he always said that the figures in his work were not inventions but sightings of individuals and events of the time. In 1991, Jock was commissioned by the Artistic Records Committee of the Imperial War Museum to record events surrounding the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and in 1992, he designed sets and costumes for Kenneth MacMillans The Judas Tree, Royal Opera House in 1992. It was at this point that the figure fell away from McFadyens work and the full-blown landscape, often a serious comment on life in the modern urban environment, and on a monumental scale, emerged and continues to preoccupy him to this day. In 2005 he collaborated with his wife Susie Honeyman to create The Grey Gallery, to work with artists, writers and musicians on a project by project basis with the aim to work across all disciplines. Jock currently lives and works in London and Edinburgh. Jock has had over 40 solo exhibitions and his work is held by 30 public collections as well as private and corporate collections in Britain and abroad. Lot 15 Linda Sutton (British, b.1947) Title: ‘Space Angel, Mars and Exploding Star’ Medium: Acrylic and gold-leaf Ukulele: Kala Concert 1971-74 Royal College of Art, London. Her teachers there included Sir Robert de Grey PPRA and Carel Weight RA, both of whom bought Lindas paintings for their own collections. Other teachers and admirers at this time were Peter Blake RA, Robert Buhler RA and Ruskin Spear RA. “Linda Sutton and I share in common two mentors, Sir Roger de Grey and Carel Weight. Alas! They are no longer with us but the friendship and encouragement we encountered, be it at different times at the Royal College of Art and for many years after, remain with us to this day. The embryonic artist sets out on a journey of the imagination and along the way confronts, even within the inner sanctum of the art world, obstacles and deterrents erected by the conventionalists who appear at every other turning. In time one learns to by-pass them and take ones own road. Linda, rather in the manner of the eponymous heroine, set off from the start along the individualist trail. She was well armed with a sharp vision, a quiver full of barbed questions and a golden seine net that she threw with vivacious confidence at any plump dream attempting to escape.” - Mick Rooney RA. “Her paintings which have been regularly on show at the Academys annual Summer Exhibition have delighted with their wit. Her crowded paintings are colourful, contemporary, figurative and narrative work, enriched by an understanding of the conscious displacements of scale and perspective illusionist teasing which is the legacy of the freedom now possible in paintings with the advent of modernism and abstract idioms.” - Marina Vaizey in the The Sunday Times. The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. Lot 16 Lisa Wright (British, b.1965) Title: ‘Untitled’ Ukulele: Kala Concert Lisa Wrights (British, b.1965) paintings hold us in the present and connect us with the past. Her intimate understanding and connection to historical painting, together with the longstanding discipline of drawing Wright has always pursued, lend authenticity and gravitas. The careful balance of both figurative and abstract elements, along with a heightened and often sensual use of colour, emphasise the vibrant and contemporary nature of the work. Childhood adornments of bonbons, ribbons and laces may have altered considerably but what they represent has not: the inevitable and irresistible desire to escape prepubescence with the trying on of the adult persona.By pulling visual threads through time and fastening them to the present, these gently unsettling images pinch the viewer and connect them with a shared history. After studying at The Royal Academy Schools, London, 1990-1993, Wright moved to Cornwall, in the south west of England, where she currently lives and works. Her work has featured in numerous solo and curated group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and is held in many important corporate and private collections. Lot 17 Louis Turpin (British, b.1947) Title: ‘The Rye Town Ukulele’ Ukulele: Kala Concert Born in post-war London, the son of artists living in Brixton. On leaving school he studied Architecture before changing direction and going to art school. The last half of his Fine Art painting course was spent film-making and, on graduation, he became involved in film work in London. In 1975, Louis began to concentrate on painting and, in an intense three-month period of work, he moved from abstraction to figuration. The hop garden outside his cottage was the pathway through to figurative painting. In 1985, inspired by Vita Sackville-Wests garden at Sissinghurst he embarked upon a continuing series of British garden paintings. This year also saw the start of a series of very successful one-man shows throughout the UK, and latterly in the USA. During this period he also continued to paint his distinctive portraits as shown at the Royal Academy of Arts, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters and at international contemporary art fairs. His work has featured in several publications including Anthony Huxleys The Painted Garden. In 1993, Louis was invited to exhibit in York in conjunction with the National Garden Scheme. This was the first of a series of National Garden Scheme exhibitions around the country, including a one-man show in Henley which was the subject of a major article in the Sunday Times Classic magazine. In 1996, Louis completed several commissions to produce paintings for hotels including a suite of paintings for the Bedruthen Steps Hotel, Cornwall. 1997 saw a commission to paint the gardens and landscape of Glyndebourne. The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. Lot 18 Michael Kirkbride (British, b.1959) Title: ‘Drawing Studio’ Medium: Oil Ukulele: Kala Concert Born in 1959 in County Durham Michael gained a Degree in Fine art from Sunderland Polytechnic. Throughout the 1980s he lived and worked in Newcastle upon Tyne and was a member of The Waterloo Street Artists Studio Group. In 1992 He attended The Royal Academy Schools postgraduate painting course where he received a travel award to visit Mexico to study the Murals of Diego Rivera. In 2014 he was elected curator of the New English Art Club, a collective of artists and curators who teach various forms of art, with whom he exhibits on a regular basis. He also currently teaches at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Michael delves into an extremely inwards process when he creates his work. Often with surreal and absurdist twists, his works often reveal an excited subconscious, one that is engaged with the movement of the world. It has been said that Above all, his works are supposition; they seek to make visible narratives that exist in the mind’s eye. Through observation, recollection and his imagination Michael begins with a drawing. He draws impulsively on whatever comes to hand, later piecing together these fragments into notebooks. The notebooks become like a documentation of a paintings evolution. Michael’s paintings are phenomenal in their composition and structure. Often of crowded scenes and clambering figures creating bundles of shapes, disjointed and chaotic imagery. This chaos is balanced by use of subdued colours which he creates often in egg tempera. He collides this ancient medium with modern life scenes, so that his works are brimming with humour and pathos. Each painting tells a story for instance of guests at a dinner party, life drawing classes or car park traffic jams. Through taking these relatable scenes and projecting them with honest craftsmanship, there is a personal element to his work wherein we feel we get to know him and ourselves a little bit better. Artist statement: The image on my ukulele was inspired by teaching experiences with students at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) where I am a drawing tutor. The rituals and gestures that occurred when drawing activities took place offered exciting pictorial possibilities. The geometric backdrop of easels and boards provided a direct counterpoint to the movement of students within their zones of concentration. Lot 20 Charles Williams (British, b. 1965) Title: ‘Untitled’ Ukulele: Kala Concert Artist Statement: Charles Williams’ work is very like short stories. He tries to cram everything he is thinking about, other paintings old and new, newspaper stories, what he saw on his holidays or when he last went to the shops into each painting. Sometimes characters and places evolve; sometimes they just appear and then disappear. The chief studio rule is no sketches, no photos, no studies, nothing. People seem to assume that the paintings come from somewhere, but they are simply a la tête. He cannot be bothered with stopping and fiddling around with those things, or doing that projecting thing. Method of Working: The work is either in oil paint, watercolour or, recently, acrylic, and he is fascinated by the ways in which each medium dictates the result. For example, in order to develop a watercolour painting the work has to get darker, as watercolour is transparent and you cannot make it lighter. Williams’ methodology is, to some extent, determined by the circumstances of his training - 1980s Art Colleges were the site of an ultimately futile battle between Abstract Formalism and figurative, representational ideas, both with their traditions and taboos, and he tries to synthesize them in his work. A keen observational draughtsman, Williams has published two books on working from observation, and several magazine series, but it seems to play little part in the work he exhibits.

The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. I want to thank Mick, Gemma, and all of the artists who put their stamp of creativity and beauty on our Kala Ukulele—it is an honor!

Lot 23 PJ Crook MBE (British, b.1945) Title: ‘Untitled’ Ukulele: Kala Tenor PJ’s paintings combine a highly distinctive style with extraordinary technical mastery. Rather than painting from photographs or direct observation, PJ prefers to draw from a combination of remembered observation and imagination, resulting in an intuitive and resolved composition. Few contemporary artists are more accomplished at depicting perspective or depth of field, and the viewer has a sense of being invited into each painting, encouraged by the inclusion of the frame in the picture surface. Her work features in many major private and public collections including that of Imperial War Museum London; Haavatz, Israel; El Mundo, Madrid; La Ville de Paris; the Department for Transport, London; the late King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia; the President of Estonia; Conrad Black; Lord Bamford; the Marquess of Bath; Paul Allen; Jackie Collins; Peter Gabriel; Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox. PJ has received numerous awards including an honorary doctorate of art in 2010 and MBE for services to art in 2011. The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. Lot 24 Charlie Calder-Potts (British) Title: ‘No End for the Clouds’ Medium: Pencil, gold leaf and ink Ukulele: Kala Concert Artist Statement: ‘Travel and the insight and understanding it provides into different cultures and people is essential to my practice. The Middle East and the ancient interactions encouraged by the silk route between the East and West are of particular interest. My work looks at people; our similarities in spite of differing environments, religions and cultural practices and the cyclical nature of history demonstrated throughout. My paintings attempt to condense the history of a place within a contemporary format. The photography element to my work provides a documentary quality that is in many ways a form of reportage; recording an anonymous individual going about their everyday life whether that be commuting on the overground in Hackney or on the streets of Erbil in Iraq. The mixed imagery I layer over this then brings many elements of history to that place and person. It is a way of observing; revealing forgotten elements of the past alongside an unseen/unnoticed present. Thousands of years of trade have meant that philosophy, religion and language have been in a constant state of flux. One thing however remains the same - we are all human and have human nature in common; inquisitive, curious, spiritual beings that constantly question morality and our existence through the use of arts. I work with a variety of media such as photography, inks, oils, waxes, pastels on various supports such as aluminium, scrap armoured metal, copper, wood panel and more recently vellum paper. My pieces vary in size - with anything from 10cm x 15cm works on paper to 8ft x 10ft aluminium installations. The title of this piece is the translation of the Farsi script on the ukulele.’ The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. A Statement from Mike Upton: ‘Mick Rooney contacted me some months ago to let me know of the Art on a Ukulele project benefiting the Hep C Trust and I was all-in with the idea. Lot 25 Peter Layzell (British, b.1962) Title: ‘Malcolm Lowry he Lived Nightly’ Medium: Oil Ukulele: Kala Concert. Peter Layzell is a British born artist who was inspired to become a painter at an early age by his “Grandad Les” who painted in a shed at the bottom of his garden. Graduating from Coventry Polytechnic in Fine Art under Alan Dyer and Harry Weinberger in 1984, Layzell has since exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the National Portrait Gallery’s annual Exhibition and with Portal Painters in London, Edinburgh and Boston. Peter’s travels in Northern Europe allowed him to pursue and develop his interest in Flemish Renaissance paintings further; particularly the polished panel paintings of Van Eyck, Bouts, Roger Van Der Weyden and Gerard David. He works in a variety of media but uses mainly oil paints on wood panel. The influence of the Dutch masters on Peter’s work is clear to see; the dimly lit childhood figures in his paintings emanate a melancholic quality reminiscent of Vermeer and Rembrandt. In referencing this style, Layzell carves out a distinctly unique identity within the context of contemporary and modern portrait painters. Artist statement: ‘My piece is dedicated to the memory of the novelist Malcolm Lowry. This year saw the sixtieth anniversary of his death. Lowry lived a troubled life blighted by alcoholism, and his best known novel ‘Under the Volcano’ reflects this. Despite his troubles, I always felt that his chosen epitaph: “Malcolm Lowry he lived nightly and drank daily and died playing the ukulele” reflects both his torment and a more playful side to his character. My piece celebrates him, his day and night temperament, and his epitaph.’ The Kala Ukuleles are 61cm in length and have been made by Mike Upton. A Statement from Mike Upton: ‘Mick Rooney contacted me some months ago to let me know of the Art on a Ukulele project benefiting the Hep C Trust and I was all-in with the idea. Lot 27 Fipsi Seilern (British, b.1984) Title: ‘Untitled’ Ukulele: Kala Tenor Fipsi Seilern was born in London in 1984. She studied in Florence for four years under the American painter Charles H. Cecil, learning the traditional “sight-size” portrait painting method. Since moving back to London in 2007, she has worked in many different studios, pursuing a fascination with the human condition and in particular, communication, dialogue, response and above all the subconscious.
