SOURCEBOOK GRR2011e LUCIEN SOULBAN · GREEN RONIN PUBLISHING SOURCEBOOK A refitted VTOL Carnival Air-freighter lumbers through the air like an overfed bumblebee, sluggish and heavy on the noise. You sit onboard, waiting to land. Not since the Atlanta Boys Convoy of 1934, when the government loaded 52 hardened criminals into a train and shipped them out to “inaugurate” Alcatraz Island, has secrecy and security been this heavy. For Super-Con Air, however, this is business as usual. The Carnival is the workhorse of convict transports; she can normally carry 23 passengers along with 22 tons of cargo, but following the refit, she’s hefting two additional power plants and space for 10 powered felons… eight awake and two asleep. Awake, you sit in reinforced cage called “The Egg,” because that’s what it looks like. The Egg suppresses active power fields and locks you down in sensory deprivation for the trip. It’s a blackout of your senses, designed to keep you off- balance when they finally transfer you out. Asleep, the Department of Justice deems you too powerful to risk handling. You’re probably a Type IV or V, and that makes folks nervous enough to crank you out in a hotsleep coffin. You won’t wake up until you’re imbedded 200 meters deep inside “the Mountain.” You feel like you’ve been in the dark for years before someone nudges your Egg. That’s just the VTOL setting down on the landing pad. A few minutes later, there’s motion again. They’ve disconnected your Egg from its suspension struts aboard the Carnival, and they’re wheeling you down the jet’s back ramp. -

Political Concepts
chap 13 23/1/03 7:49 am Page 156 13 Multiculturalism Jonathan Seglow Introduction1 Multiculturalism can be acknowledged, championed, challenged or rejected, but it cannot be ignored because it describes a central feature of the world in which we live. Oddly, however, for many years it was ignored, despite decades of strug- gle by black Americans for full political inclusion, the confederalism adopted by several European states to accommodate linguistic and religious diversity and the multicultural policies adopted by Australia and Canada in the 1970s, to name just three examples. In the 1980s communitarian writers embraced the culture-friendly virtues of solidarity, togetherness and belonging, but ironically, while community was prized as homely and familiar, it was never spelt out which communities – cultural or otherwise – were being invoked. Only in the early 1990s did the liberal-communitarian controversy begin to transform itself into a more particular debate about how to accommodate cultural and ethnic claims within a broadly liberal political theory. Here Will Kymlicka’s Liberalism, Com- munity and Culture led the way.2 By now, it is increasingly recognised that liberal constitutions are shot through with partisan ethnocultural norms.3 This is the first claim I want to make then. Multiculturalism cannot be avoided. Whether endorsed as a policy (cultural diversity is good), it cannot be circumvented as a social fact, not so long as we are thinking about theories for the world in which we live and not a cultureless planet far away. Theories of justice, democracy and human rights are necessarily abstract since they have a more or less extensive reach and describe a reality not yet arrived. -

The JLI Battles A Zombie Outbreak!By Henry WestDay Of The Undead is a new Justice League children's book featuring the characters appearing in comics published by DC Entertainment. In this new adventure, The Batman(Bruce Wayne), Blue Beetle(Jaime Reyes), Hawkman(Katar Hol), and Hawkwoman(Shayera Thal) learned that a rare artifact from a Gotham museum has stolen and it was the Gentleman Ghost, who will use it to awaken the dead and become his army of zombies. It is up the JLI to stop the Ghost and his nightmarish plans. One of the many reason i liked about this book is that the DC Universe Superheroes was wearing their classic costumes, and not the New 52 versions that made the current DCU a laughing stock. Day Of The Undead is the best Justice League book for all fans of the JLI!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. -

Surveillance, Social Order, and Gendered Subversions
SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns. Accessed 16 July 2017. !iii Acknowledgements This project owes its existence to a great many people who supported and encour- aged me throughout the process, asked insightful and necessary questions, took the time to read early chapter drafts, let me take the time to pet dogs and read non-Bat-comics, and were just generally the best friends a thesis-writer could hope for. -
