„Wahrlich eine Bereicherung für jede Drummer-Bibliothek.“ Benny Greb „Jost Nickel is a true groove-meister.“ Barry Finnerty (Gitarrist bei Miles Davis, The Crusaders, The Brecker Brothers u.a.) „This book mirrors his personality & mental approach to just grooving“, Chris Coleman (Prince) „... eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten, um seiner eigenen Kreativität Ausdruck zu verleihen.“ Florian Alexandru-Zorn. • Jazz Drums Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Online Jazz Handbook
Jazz Drums Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Online Jazz Handbook welcome to the drums chapter of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz’s Online Jazz Handbook! When learning jazz, there is no substitute for listening to the classic recordings and understanding the lineage. Please refer often to the albums listed at the end of this chapter for great examples of the material listed below. Don’t forget to practice with a metronome: This is important for drummers at all levels when learning new styles and ideas! Introduction: The drums can be heard in almost every style of music, and just like every instrument, the style helps dictate the specific roll of the instrument. For example, in traditional Afro-Cuban ensembles, the many drummers and percussionists create the main body of music that the bass, guitar, vocals, and other instruments float above. On the opposite side of that, you might hear an orchestra in which the only job of the percussionists is to create interesting sounds and colors on top of a the string section. In jazz, the drummer plays both a crucial part in creating a strong foundation, and helping add color and shape to the music. The first step is creating that strong foundation with the ride cymbal! Getting Started with the Ride Cymbal: Since the 1930’s and the beginning of the be-bop era, the main focal point on a jazz drum kit has been the ride cymbal. The phrasing of the ride cymbal is based around the quarter note, however instead of thinking in eighth notes (like most rock music on the radio today), we want to think in eighth note triplets.

Division of Music Morgantown, West Virginia 2000 Keywords: Jazz, Drumset, Blackwell, New Orleans Copyright 2000 David J. Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach.

He was friends Iwith my teacher Al Miller, and we would go to see Buddy Rich perform backstage. Jim would tell me what Buddy was doing and an- alyze it to the slightest movement. My visit with the “Chapin Magic” started. Jim was always so sharing with his hard-earned knowledge. He simply taught the best drummers in the 20th century and was work- ing on the 21st century. His books, CDs and DVD is a university of information; owning them all is a must! I have learned from him, taught with him, performed with him and even played for him while he sang. He loved life and music equally. I am a better person for having experienced the “Chapin Mag- ic!” He was called the Father of Drumming Independence. How ironic of him to pass away on July 4th, America’s Independence. Jim will live long in his contributions ... • 40 Drum Rudiments with Video Examples
Drum rudiment 1 Drum rudiment In percussion music, a rudiment is one of the basic patterns used in rudimental drumming. These patterns of drum strokes can be combined in many ways to create music. History The origin of snare rudiments can be traced back to Swiss mercenaries armed with long polearms. The use of pikes in close formation required a great deal of coordination. The sound of the tabor was used to set the tempo and communicate commands with distinct drumming patterns. These drumming patterns became the basis of the snare drum rudiments. The first written rudiment goes back to the year 1612 in Basel, Switzerland.[1] The cradle of rudimental drumming is said to be France, where professional drummers became part of the King's honour guard in the 17th and 18th centuries. The craft was perfected during the reign of Napoleon I. Le Rigodon is one of the cornerstones of modern rudimental drumming.[1] There have been many attempts to formalize a standard list of snare drum rudiments. The National Association of Rudimental Drummers, an organization established to promote rudimental drumming, put forward a list of 13 essential rudiments, and later a second set of 13 to form the original 26. The Percussive Arts Society reorganized the first 26 and added another 14 to form the current 40 International Drum Rudiments. Currently, the International Association of Traditional Drummers is working to once again promote the original 26 rudiments. Today there are four main Rudimental Drumming cultures: Swiss Basler Trommeln, Scottish Pipe Drumming, American Ancient Drumming, and American Modern Drumming.

Building a Relationship with Percussion Instruments Bill Matney, Kalani Das, & Michael Marcionetti Materials used with permission by Sarsen Publishing and Kalani Das, 2017 Building a relationship with percussion instruments Going somewhere new can be exciting; it might also be a little intimidating or cause some anxiety. If I go to a party where I don’t know anybody except the person who invited me, how do I get to know anyone else? My host will probably be gracious enough to introduce me to others at the party. I will get to know their name, where they are from, and what they commonly do for work and play. In turn, they will get to know the same about me. We may decide to continue our relationship by learning more about each other and doing things together. As music therapy students, we develop relationships with music instruments. We begin by learning instrument names, and by getting to know a little about the instrument. We continue our relationship by learning technique and by playing music with them!
