Battle of New Orleans, War of 1812 American Muster and Troop Roster List Jean Lafitte National Park Service National Historical Park and Preserve U.S. Department of the Interior Battle of New Orleans, War of 1812 American Muster and Troop Roster List Transcribed in partnership with the University of New Orleans History Department and the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies Battle of New Orleans Muster Lists and Troop Rosters What is this list? The following document is a transcription of several thousand names of people who participated on the American side of the Battle of New Orleans. The troop rosters for the New Orleans campaign, including the Battle of New Orleans, were compiled at various times after the battle, mostly in the 1950s and 1960s, from various sources. These typed and hand written lists created over the years - were not digitally searchable. Additionally, due to the poor condition of the troop roster lists, they could not be scanned and made searchable. To ensure a better experience for its visitors, the National Park Service, along with the University of New Orleans and Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies, has made the available troop rosters digitally searchable. This enormous transcription project has been completed with the help of the University of New Orleans and the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies. These institutions provided the internship and funding to complete the transcription process. Why are there so many different regiment groups? Major General Andrew Jackson had to cobble together a fighting force made up of whoever he could find to defend New Orleans against Great Britain. Because New Orleans is located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, it provided an ideal target for the British to attack and attempt to capture. The nation that controlled the ports at the end of the river controlled the trade of the United States with the rest of the world. The British were on their way to New Orleans in December of 1814 and General Andrew Jackson raced to intercept them. In a very short period of time and with a limited number of enlisted men, Major General Andrew Jackson had to recruit a fighting force from all social classes, races, and backgrounds. He was forced to request assistance from every able bodied man in the area, including privateers, Cherokee Indians, and free men of color. All of these varied groups, including militia and volunteers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Louisiana, fought together under Jackson’s command. Due to the emergency situation and the brief periods of service of most volunteers, accurate records of those who fought in the battle were not kept. The lists we have today have been cobbled together from several sources and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or repetitious in some instances. What can I do with this list? Visitors to the Battlefield often request information on the soldiers, militia and volunteers who fought under Major General Andrew Jackson during the various battles fought in the New Orleans area during December1814 and January 1815. They often inquire whether their ancestors fought in the American campaign against the British at New Orleans. They believe that their ancestors participated in the battle and seek more information on Jackson’s troops. Having a name is often the first step to deeper research. The National Park Service would like to assist visitors in learning more about the participants at the Battle of New Orleans and whether their ancestors took part in the engagements. Please type a name into the search bar and see if he pops up on our list. 1856 St. Louis Stampede By Cooper Wingert http://housedivided.dickinson.edu/sites/stampedes/the-1856-st-louis-stampede/ Slave Stampedes on the Missouri Borderlands National Park Service Network To Freedom // House Divided Project at Dickinson College DATELINE: ST. LOUIS, JULY 14, 1856 On Monday night, July 14, 1856, a group of eight to nine enslaved Missourians set out on their quest for freedom. Leaving the farm of slaveholder Robert Wash, a 65-year-old retired judge who resided on the outskirts of St. Louis, this contingent of freedom seekers charted an unknown course to liberty. Yet while the freedom seekers’ exact path is difficult to ascertain, the motivations underlying their “stampede” for freedom are somewhat easier to deduce. The group of escapees comprised a family unit––”a man and wife, three sons, two daughters, and the wife’s sister,” as reported in the St. Louis Republican. The freedom seekers may have been spurred to action by Wash’s declining health in the summer of 1856––he would die just months later, in November. Likely fearing separation at an estate sale, they chose to strike out to gain their freedom and preserve their family. [1] These freedom seekers, whose names are unknown, may have joined with three other enslaved Missourians, held by prominent St. Louis citizen John O’Fallon. The trio had escaped from O’Fallon “a few nights previous” to July 14, and the city’s leading papers instantly suspected that the two group escapes were connected. “Several other slaves are supposed to be in their company on the underground track,” noted the editors of the Republican.

  • History of the U.S. Attorneys
Bicentennial Celebration of the United States Attorneys 1789 - 1989 "The United States Attorney is the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of a sovereignty whose obligation to govern impartially is as compelling as its obligation to govern at all; and whose interest, therefore, in a criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done. As such, he is in a peculiar and very definite sense the servant of the law, the twofold aim of which is that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer. He may prosecute with earnestness and vigor– indeed, he should do so. But, while he may strike hard blows, he is not at liberty to strike foul ones. It is as much his duty to refrain from improper methods calculated to produce a wrongful conviction as it is to use every legitimate means to bring about a just one." QUOTED FROM STATEMENT OF MR. JUSTICE SUTHERLAND, BERGER V. UNITED STATES, 295 U. S. 88 (1935) Note: The information in this document was compiled from historical records maintained by the Offices of the United States Attorneys and by the Department of Justice. Every effort has been made to prepare accurate information. In some instances, this document mentions officials without the “United States Attorney” title, who nevertheless served under federal appointment to enforce the laws of the United States in federal territories prior to statehood and the creation of a federal judicial district. INTRODUCTION In this, the Bicentennial Year of the United States Constitution, the people of America find cause to celebrate the principles formulated at the inception of the nation Alexis de Tocqueville called, “The Great Experiment.” The experiment has worked, and the survival of the Constitution is proof of that.

GRACY, II Galveston Island, lying only a short distance from the Texas mainland, was the scene of one of the least known events of Texas history. There Jean Lafitte, the noted buccaneer, and the Karankawa Indians are supposed to have fought one another over one or more kidnapped Indian women. The conflict occ.upied two or three days, but which two or three is rather vague since it can be narrowed down only to within a period of some 783 days. Early in the nineteenth century, the thirty mile long and two mile wide island was still the home of a large number of deer and birds that f~d on the thick marsh and prairie grass. The principal landmark was a cluster of trees called the "Three Trees," known today as "Lafitte's Grove." Since "Three Trees" stood in !1 grove, chronicles do not agree as to how many trees there actually were.' These trees were somewhere be tween the center and the west end ·of the island on a ridge which stood a.bout twelve feet above the surrounding marshes.

  • A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo
A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo Chapter 1 Introduction This book is the result of research conducted for an exhibition on Louisiana history prepared by the Louisiana State Museum and presented within the walls of the historic Spanish Cabildo, constructed in the 1790s. All the words written for the exhibition script would not fit on those walls, however, so these pages augment that text. The exhibition presents a chronological and thematic view of Louisiana history from early contact between American Indians and Europeans through the era of Reconstruction. One of the main themes is the long history of ethnic and racial diversity that shaped Louisiana. Thus, the exhibition—and this book—are heavily social and economic, rather than political, in their subject matter. They incorporate the findings of the "new" social history to examine the everyday lives of "common folk" rather than concentrate solely upon the historical markers of "great white men." In this work I chose a topical, rather than a chronological, approach to Louisiana's history. Each chapter focuses on a particular subject such as recreation and leisure, disease and death, ethnicity and race, or education. In addition, individual chapters look at three major events in Louisiana history: the Battle of New Orleans, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Organization by topic allows the reader to peruse the entire work or look in depth only at subjects of special interest. For readers interested in learning even more about a particular topic, a list of additional readings follows each chapter. Before we journey into the social and economic past of Louisiana, let us look briefly at the state's political history.
