4 At BBS, our approach to crafting wheels depends on two things: advanced technology and the constant pursuit of perfection. In this section, we hear from three people who are passionate about BBS and the company’s approach to technology.

Manufacturing with human warmth you can feel You hear a creaking sound and see a lump of metal get crushed right before your eyes. The upper die rises, and the shape of the wheel appears below, wreathed in flames. The first time I visited the main factory of BBS in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, I saw an uncountable number of wheels in front of me—yet I also felt a special kind of human warmth. Pressing the material little by little, the operators were giving life to each wheel in a very gentle way. Though machines were performing the process itself, the way they moved was similar to that of craftspeople working manually. They seemed to be approaching their work with the attention to detail and passion of true artisans.

Six forging presses, including a 9,000-ton press, cover different wheel diameters and stages of the forging process, from forming the base of the wheel to imprinting its final design.

Determined to make only products of real quality. That’s why BBS insists upon forging. After my first tour of the BBS factory, I found myself naturally taking a greater interest in wheels. I looked for opportunities to experience BBS wheels for myself, and I was impressed again and again at how much lighter and more nimble they made the driving experience. Also, I came to see wheels not as something disposable but as accessories to be used for a lifetime. Forging metal brings out its toughness while enhancing its lightness and beauty. Born of an unrelenting pursuit of performance, the functional beauty of BBS wheels rejects all waste and excess. These appealing qualities could not exist without the forging process.

Dies are essential to the forging process and have a major impact on quality. That’s why BBS manufactures and maintains 100% of its own dies in-house.

A spirit of inquiry that leads to quality. Drivers can immediately feel the difference. BBS’s wheels are quite often compared to works of art. They are without a doubt truly refined accessories whose quality you can feel with your fingertips when you touch them. Experienced artisans carefully hand-finish each and every wheel, making sure even their unseen backs surfaces are beautiful. That’s the level of quality they demand of themselves. In order for BBS to be BBS, it has to continue to exceed expectations in this way. Leveraging its unbeatable technologies, it has to keep finding completely new ways to add value to its wheels. I see my role as helping people see and understand the unique approach that BBS is taking to quality today.

6 Tires are the only part of the car that touches the road. That’s why maximizing their performance is essential. The racing circuit is where competition unfolds in the most grueling of conditions. In order to win, you have to push everything to the limit. That’s why we took a closer look at the only part of the car that touches the road, the tires—as well as at the part that transmits power to the tires, the wheels. To win a race, you have to be able to corner without loss. That’s why it’s crucial for wheels to bring out the grip performance of the tires to maximum effect. In my experience, BBS wheels have what it takes to deliver peak tire performance.

BBS began supplying wheels to Formula One in the 1990s, and today our wheels are favored by teams in SUPER GT and other championships around the world.

Drivers need the freedom to turn and stop just as they intend. Reducing driver concern toward zero is key. Forged wheels have a different kind of flexibility and grip to them. These qualities help orient the tire tread to the road applying maximum surface area and helping the tires adhere to the road with real power. Moreover, when drivers enter a corner, forged wheels significantly contribute to steering responsiveness. Giving drivers a greater tactile feel for the road allows them to go beyond their previous limits and press the accelerator a little bit more. They are giving their all to the race, and forged wheels are replacing any trepi- dation with confidence. I believe that this is a fundamental aspect of wheel performance.

Formed by subjecting a metal ingot to immense pressure in a forging press, a forged wheel is extremely lightweight and has the ability to flex gracefully in response to driving conditions.

How can wheels be better to help us win? BBS cares. And listens. When we talk to drivers after a race, there’s one particular thing we notice. When they are positive about the wheels, they invariably turn in a good time. There’s a direct relationship between driving feel and results. BBS listens to the voice of the driver and puts what it learns into its new wheels. This approach truly resonates with me. It’s why I feel that BBS is the best possible partner for people like us, who are competing on the track to win it all.

7 Lexus International IS F, RC F, GS F Product Planning Mamoru Sakamoto In order for Lexus to be Lexus, we needed what BBS brings to the table.

8 For the Lexus F, a premium Japanese sports cars, we required—and received— the ideal wheels. The relationship between BBS and the Lexus F goes back to 2004. At the time we were developing the wheels for this model, which we envisioned as a premium Japanese sports car. We wanted the wheels to be lightweight and dependable and have ample rigidity. In addition, we needed them to offer the same kind of value that the Lexus brand itself offers. We see Lexus as leveraging the skills and souls of master craftspeople to take both technology and the resulting product beyond conventional limits. BBS shares this same intention and stance. That’s why I think it was destiny that we should come together in a common purpose.

Technology alone cannot produce an excellent product. The craftsmanship of BBS depends on the passion of their people.

Combining the best possible design with the best possible performance. A sports car that drivers could enjoy both on the street and on the circuit… In order to realize this vision, what impression should the wheels give? Based on the concept of the vehicle, our designer begins to make sketches. We then strive to give the design physical form while realizing outstanding performance and durability. It’s all about achieving balance at the highest possible level. We have 100% trust in BBS because they have the know-how needed to turn our ideal into reality.

We put force equivalent to the weight of an entire car on one wheel and test it again and again, polishing quality to perfection.

The latest processing technology— turning our spirit of challenge into physical reality. Because these are Lexus F wheels, their design has to communicate a readiness to take on any and all challenges. From time to time, our designers visit the Takaoka Main Factory and talk to BBS’s engineers about what they imagine and require in precise detail. These discussions lead to new ideas to for applying the latest processing technologies. Designs that may have initially seemed impossible become possible, and the perfect wheels for the Lexus F’s ongoing journey came to be. We’d definitely like BBS to be our ally on this mission over the long term.
