SO 2. Jahrhunderts.

These are the basic tenets with which to enter the world of Christian Marclay’s djTRIO, especially in the case of their live recordings. World-renowned multi-media artist Marclay may be best known these days for his globally embraced film collage piece “The Clock,” but he began by redefining the roles of “musician,” “DJ,” and even “artist” itself. Since the late ‘70s, Marclay has created art by masterfully mistreating both vinyl and phonographic equipment, using them both in a manner more consistent with the way an abstract sculptor employs raw materials in the service of a larger vision. Sometimes these sonic journeys utilizing a turntable as a sextant have been in-the-moment experiences and sometimes they’ve been captured for posterity, but 21 September 2002 on Cuneiform Records happens to be both.

This is brilliant work.” – All Music Guide “The Golden Quartet is the closest thing to a standard jazz group that Wadada Leo Smith ever used to present his own music. …the music is lively, even explosive at time, yet still exquisitely balanced. …No other composer accommodates the independence of the individual and the unity of the ensemble in quite the way Smith does. …the collective sound always coheres into something purposeful and beautiful. Remarkably, the personalities and forces are kept in balance.”– Point of Departure “...a welcome reminder of Smith's continued importance in the continuum of creative improvised music.” – All About Jazz Lauded as “one of the most vital musicians on the planet” by Coda, Wadada Leo Smith is one of the most visionary, boldly original and artistically important figures in contemporary American jazz and free music, and one of the great trumpet players of our time.

As time goes on and the user “likes” more things, this website’s sophisticated algorithm starts to predict more things that you should “like.” In keeping with any good business, the plan is to cultivate repeat customers who easily can find things that they want to consume— e.g. I like candy, so please direct me to more candy so I can buy more candy. The problem in all of this is that time and attention turn out to be finite resourc- es, so other things must be excluded for you to receive more of what you’re told that you’ll like. The result is more of the same. I have a problem with this. As I extend this thought toward music, I realize I am not a typical consumer. My needs, concerns, and experiences are not universally shared. I can’t re- ally recall ever being excited to hear music that sounded exactly like some- thing else.

TEXT OF LIGHT http://www.sonicyouth.com/symu/lee/category/text-of-light/ "[Text of Light] …explode with a formidable combination of free jazz skronk, seismic percussion, tonal drone and searing guitar noise." —The WIRE, March 2008 L to R: Lee Ranaldo, Ulrich Krieger, Alan Licht. Photo by Daša Barteková TEXT OF LIGHT The Text of Light group was formed in 1999 with the idea to perform improvised music to the films of Stan Brakhage and other members of the American Cinema avante garde of the 1950s-60s (Brakhageʼs film 'The Text of Light' was the premiere performance and namesake of the group). The original premise was to improvise (not 'illustrate') to films from the American Avante-Garde (50s-60s etc), an under- known period of American filmic poetics. Members of the group include Lee Ranaldo and Alan Licht (gtrs/devices), Christian Marclay and DJ Olive (turntables), William Hooker (drums/perc), Ulrich Krieger (sax/electronics), and most recently Tim Barnes (drums/perc). Various combinations of these players attend 'Text' gigs, depending on individual schedules, so the group takes on various permutations---sometimes all members participate, sometimes not. To date the group has performed with the following films: Brakhageʼs The Text of Light, Dog Star Man, Anticipation of the Night, Songs; Harry Smithʼs Mahagonny outtakes, Oz-The Approach to the Emerald City, and Late Superimpositions. The group has headlined the Victoriaville Music Festival, Canada (2002); Three Rivers Film Festival, Pittsburgh; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; The Whitney Museum, NYC; and have done several tours of Europe as well as performing in New York City and other USA club and cinema venues.

We had hoped to be through with the excitements once we bailed out the photographer, but alas, no. We don’t know how the copy editor actually got to Dollywood, not the exact nature of the alleged unpleasantness that so alarmed the Pigeon Forge constabulary, but on behalf of the entire i2b team, we offer our regrets and apologies. However, any restitution for damages shall be the sole responsibility of the copy editor, who we had conveniently sacked several hours before whatever unpleasantness may or may not have occurred at whatever time – past or future – the alleged acts may or may not have etc and so forth. There will be no further comment on this matter. We finished our Day 3 summary just in time to scamper to the Mill & Mine for the highly anticipated Tyshawn Sorey Trio performance at noon. Aside from being named a 2017 MacArthur Genius, Sorey has a rich discography as both leader and sideman. Fantastically talented on drums, piano, and trombone, Sorey has also been making his mark as a composer. But not every event can live up to expectation, even at Big Ears. Beginning with a long, pensive introduction by Cory Smythe – a terrific pianist who we saw several times with the International Contemporary Ensemble – every section of this 75 minute, single composition performance seemed to go too long.
