Koepke's Mitchell crashed southwest of Clifton Point, Nassau, Bahamas, on a patrol/training flight from No. 111 Operational Training Unit. His nephew Charles Barth (Chuck) Koepke (1943-2004), well known blind golfer from Regina, was named after him two months after his death. Koepke's father John came from Hanover, Grey Co., Ontario, and homesteaded at Olds, Alberta, before coming to Regina in 1912 to work as a carpenter and contractor. His mother Johanna Gertrude (Barth) was a native oif Chemnitz, Germany. Barth attended Strathcona, Central and Balfour Tech, and planned a career in meteorology. He was working as a clerk at Regina Industries when he enlisted at Regina in 1942.
