The MIFF Premiere Fund provides minority co-financing to new Australian quality narrative-drama and documentary feature films that then premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). Seeking out Stories That Need Telling, the the Premiere Fund deepens MIFF’s relationship with filmmaking talent and builds a pipeline of quality Australian content for MIFF. Launched at MIFF 2007, the Premiere Fund has committed to more than 70 projects. Under the charge of MIFF Chair Claire Dobbin, the Premiere Fund Executive Producer is Mark Woods, former CEO of Screen Ireland and Ausfilm and Showtime Australia Head of Content Investment & International Acquisitions. SEVEN UNVEILS CONTENT PLANS FOR 2019 Slate includes new Bevan Lee drama and two supersized reality hits Geraldine Hakewill, Joel Jackson and Catherine McClements headline Miss Fisher spin-off MKR’s 10th anniversary season to launch the year “Top Gear meets food” in new Gordon Ramsay series New overseas dramas feature screen heavyweights Martin Clunes, Sheridan Smith, Kelsey Grammer and more (Sydney, Friday October 26): The Seven Network today unveiled its content plans for 2019. Four new local dramas, including the next offering from creator Bevan Lee; two supersized reality hits; a female spinoff to one of the year’s most heart-warming hits and the landmark 10th season of one of Australia’s biggest shows are just some of the programs set to take Seven into its 13th consecutive year of leadership. Commenting, Seven’s Director of Network Programming Angus Ross said: “After a close win last year, we promised to up our game in 2018, and the team has delivered in spades. We’ve broken records and dominated the ratings throughout the year. In fact, in every month we have never dropped below a 39% share, while our competitors have never been above 39%. Theatre Costume, Celebrity Persona, and the Archive
Persona Studies 2019, vol. 5, no. 2 THEATRE COSTUME, CELEBRITY PERSONA, AND THE ARCHIVE EMILY COLLETT ABSTRACT This essay considers the archived costume in relation to the concept of the celebrity performer’s persona. It takes as its case study the Shakespearean costume of Indigenous actress Deborah Mailman, housed in the Australian Performing Arts Collection. It considers what the materiality of the theatre costume might reveal and conceal about a performer’s personas. It asks to what extent artefacts in an archive might both create a new persona or freezeframe a particular construct of a performer. Central to the essay are questions of agency in relation to the memorialisation of a still living actress and the problematisation of persona in terms of the archived object. Can a costume generate its own persona in relation to the actress? And what are the power dynamics involved in persona construction when an archived costume presents a charged narrative which is very different to the actress’s current construction of her persona? KEY WORDS Costume; Archive; Deborah Mailman; Indigenous; Memory; Shakespeare COSTUME IN THE ARCHIVE: A CHARGED OBJECT In this essay I consider the archived theatre costume in relation to persona studies and what the materiality of costume might reveal or conceal about the celebrity performer’s persona(s). Can an archived costume have its own persona? What complexities arise when the charged historical narrative of an archived costume is at odds with a current persona? And in the following case study of Deborah Mailman, what happens when the framing of a living Indigenous actress’s costume constructs a persona that is quite different to the one that the actress currently constructs for herself? A costume worn by a performer live on stage is remembered in particular ways – and many in the audience might focus more on the performer’s stance, physicality, and verbal prowess than what they are wearing. -

Mr Neil Armfield The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon Neil Armfield at the Faculty of Arts graduation ceremony held at 4.00pm on 21 April 2006. Neil Armfield, photo, courtesy UniNews. Citation Professor Masters, I have the honour to present Neil Armfield for admission to the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). While Neil Armfield is still only at the midpoint of his brilliant career, he has already made a distinctive contribution to the Arts and Humanities, especially through his work as a director of plays, operas and films, both within Australia and overseas. Neil was born in Sydney and is a graduate of this University, completing his Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English in 1977. While at university he began directing plays for Sydney University Dramatic Society, with such success that he was invited to direct his first professional production for the Nimrod Theatre Company in 1979. This production of David Allen’s Upside Down at the Bottom of the World, a new play about D H Lawrence in Australia, was also a great success and the production was subsequently invited to the 1980 Edinburgh Festival. Neil Armfield became artistic co-director of the Nimrod Theatre Company from 1980-82, confirming his special affinity for new Australian plays with landmark productions of Stephen Sewell’s Traitors and Welcome the Bright World and Louis Nowra’s Inside the Island. In 1983 he was appointed associate director of the Lighthouse Company in Adelaide. He is, however, most strongly associated with the work of Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre, having been a member of Company B since its inception in 1984.
