Architecture of the Region Building stone is virtually non-existent in the East of England, apart from a few special areas: z Barnack (Cambridgeshire) - the famous limestone here was worked from Roman times to the end of the 15th C. Ely and Peterborough Cathedrals are good examples of the stone in use. z Carstone (West Norfolk) - this dark brown stone forms a ridge between Castle Rising and Heacham. It has been widely used in the area as a building stone, and Downham Market was once known as the "Gingerbread town". z Puddingstone (Hertfordshire) - this unusual stone is made up of rounded Flint villages flint pebbles. A large piece sits opposite the church in the village of Standon. It has been used for building walls. z Sandstone - The Greensand Ridge runs from Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire to Gamlingay in Cambridgeshire. In some places, ‘glauconite’ (an iron-bearing mineral) colours the stone an amazing green - the origin of the name ‘Greensand’. Today you can see it used in local villages, churches, walls and bridges.

Double splayed window: (left) a type of early window where the opening is positioned in the centre of the wall thickness, and the surrounding walls are cut away inside and out, to direct light in to the building. Ferrugenous conglomerate: type of Cranwich dark brown stone formed from small pebbles bound in iron deposits. Breckles Long and short work: (right) an early technique where corners are formed using cut stone in a pattern of horizontal and vertical pieces.

Although pot a Suffolk incumbent, as Arch- deacon of Sudbury, Kent may surely claim a niche among the Sequestrated clergy of Suffolk. He was of Pembroke Hall : matriculating 1606, B.A. 1609-10, and M.A. 1613. In the latter year he was ordained priest at Chichester, and was appointed to the prebend of Gates in 1618. In the followingyear the Bishop of Chichester, Samuel Harsnet, was translated to Nor- wich ; to this everit will be due the selection of Kent to the Archdeaconry of Sudbury in 1621. Four years later he was presented to the rectory ofAshby, Norfolk ; he .probably lost all his preferments in 1642. Kent died in 1653, the administration of his will styling him as " of Oby, Norfolk." KEY, Edward. , Sotherton, Tunstal and Dunninwort R. (289). Matriculated at St. John's 1616, proceeding B.A. 1618-19 and M.A. 1622. Ordained at Norwich 23 Sept., 1627,he was instituted to the rectory of Sother- ton 15 Aug., 1633, as " Edward Kay." In 1638 he was ixesented to the combined livings of Tunstall and Dunningwortli, and in Jan., 1638-39, he was married at Tunstall Church to Mary Wilbie, widow.
