Her movie career includes roles in countless films, including: The Blues Brothers, Hannah and Her Sisters, and When Harry Met Sally. Fisher’s first book, Postcards from the Edge, leapt onto The New York Times’ bestseller list, and netted her the Los Angeles Pen Award for Best First Novel. Four more bestsellers have followed: Delusions of Grandma, Surrender the Pink, The Best Awful, and Wishful Drinking, which spawned her sold-out, one- woman, Broadway show by the same name. Following the show’s close in 2011, Wishful Drinking was made into an Emmy-nominated documentary by HBO. Her latest book, Shockaholic, is a seriously funny, acerbic & revealing memoir. Writing with tremendous wit, and a tremendous amount of self-deprecation, Fisher shares many stories, including tales of dinner with Senators Chris Dodd and Ted Kennedy, and her friendship with Michael Jackson. Fisher turned Postcards into a screenplay for the hit film starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep, and is currently adapting The Best Awful for Lifetime and Sony Television. Her writing has also appeared in Details, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Vogue, and many other major publica- tions. On television, Fisher’s credits range from “Laverne and Shirley” to “Sex and the City,” with an Emmy nomination most recently for her appearance on the popular NBC comedy, “30 Rock.” Carrie Fisher’s dry wit and candid manner have endeared her to audiences. Her experiences with addic- 34th Annual tion and bipolar disorder—and her willingness to speak honestly and openly about them—have made KEYNOTE PRESENTATION her a respected advocate for these communities. She has appeared on the California Senate floor, urging state legislators to increase government funding for medication for people living with mental health issues. For her continued courage and commitment to fighting mental illness and associated stigmas, Fisher has ADMISSION $36 – FREE with received accolades, recognition and dozens of awards. It's a pleasure to be here. >> Could you tell us a bit about how you got into not just novel writing, but graphic novel writing? Are you an author who happens to draw beautifully, or an artist with a story to tell? >> Craig Thompson: Well, as a child I was really into comic books, and in a sort of natural adult progression fell out of love with the medium around high school, and was really obsessed with film and then animation, and was sort of mapping out possible career animation, and became disillusioned with that for a number of reasons.
