THE ACADEMY MONITOR

VOLUME 9, ISSUE 4 4 FROM THE COMMANDANT T

Greetings from the great H Halls of Learning, Starfleet Academy!

Q From the Principal’s Office

U Here we are, the beginning of a new year, still trying to get accustomed to writing 2016, and STARFLEET Academy has plans to make itself A better for all the members of STARFLEET. Ok, when doesn’t it?

I’m starting my ninth year as the Academy’s Commandant and I have R seen so many changes since January 1, 2008. The Academy has grown with more Institutes, housing more colleges, that house more courses and now we have found that sometimes more isn’t always bet- T ter. Many of the once, very active colleges have fizzled down to practi- cally not even getting any students to some none at all. So, a moratori- um on new Colleges will be waived only for those that will be consid- E ered educational, a popular series, and of those that would enhance Academy. Promotions R 2 Project Purge and Merge is coming along nicely. There are some Col- Outstanding Students 3 leges and courses tagged for purging later on, since they are loosing graduate counts over 3 years and of overall interest. Cadet News 4 3rd Qtr Omissions 5 2015 was a very active year. The total graduate count for 2015 was 2 20,908. This is an approximate average of 1742 grads per month! I Staff/College News 6-7 foresee 2016 as also being a very busy year for members as well as So You Want to be a Director 0 the staff at the Academy. 7 Academy Graduates 8-12 Admiral Peg Pellerin, SFA Commandant Program Awards 13-15 1 [email protected] Boothby Awards 1-888-734-8735 EXT. x705 16-18

All Manner of Stuff 19-28 5 Happiness is a choice, today I will choose to be happy.

Bruce Hyde, who played Lt. Kevin Riley on the original Star Trek series, has died. Hyde had suf- fered from throat cancer and died on October 13, 2015 in a hospice near St. Cloud, MN, according to the Star Tribune.

He was a Dallas native who played Enterprise crew member Lt. Kevin Riley on just two early epi- sodes of the original Star Trek series, “The Naked Time” and “The Conscience of the King”. They remain memorable ones for fans. His character met an untimely end in the second episode and nev- er appeared again on the series, but did appear in Star Trek novels and other fan fiction.

His other TV credits include Dr. Kildare, The Beverly Hillbillies and That Girl. He spent the majority of his career in theater. He chaired the department of theater, film studies and dance at St. Cloud State University for more than 20 years before he stepped down earlier this year.

Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons – a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations. The series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores, providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics and the environment.

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of , someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager – CBS Digital Media. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

“Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce Star Trek's next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”

CBS All Access offers its customers more than 7,500 episodes from the current television season, previous seasons and classic shows on demand nationwide, as well as the ability to stream local CBS stations live in more than 110 markets. Subscribers can use the service online and across devices via CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its in- ception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with , and (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. Both films were produced and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.

Star Trek, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series. Almost half a century later, the Star Trek television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media

We know it doesn't take much to get Star Trek fans engaged in debate. So we put it to you: was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home – which opened on November 26, 1986, or 29 years ago, and was unquestionably the most financially successful and probably the most popular of the original-cast features -- also the best of the six big-screen adventures starring Willian Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, George Takei and Walter Koenig. The Star- Trek.com staff says… yes, trailed oh-so-closely by Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Star Trek IV had everything: a great Trek premise, drama, humor, a pro-environment message and plenty of action, not to mention whales and a story broad enough and contemporary enough to appeal to the non-Trek fans of the day. The late, great Nimoy directed with a light touch, with the notable exception of that quirky/cool sci-fi/time travel montage during the slingshot sequence, and, best of all, everyone in the supporting cast got his or her moment to shine. We also loved Leonard Roseman’s spot-on score, the superb, Oscar-nominated work of cinematographer Don Peterman, and the lovely perfor- mances by Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt as Spock’s father and mother, respectively. Catherine Hicks added warmth, charm and fun to the proceedings as Dr. Gillian Taylor, though she and Shatner did not quite click on the romantic chemistry end of the equation. And, it was also nice to see Majel Barrett and Grace Lee Whitney (who, sadly, passed away in May at the age of 85) in the Trek fold once again.

Anyone old enough to remember the making of the film still speaks of the production with awe in their voices. Nimoy shot much of The Voyage Home on location, and that open-air feeling benefits the film. They shot on a real Naval ship, and there’s no mistaking that, either. There are near-legendary stories about securing the whale footage, and that footage was craftily edited into additional scenes realized with large animatronics and scale models. And then there were the San Fran- cisco Bay scenes, with the Klingon Bird of Prey. Those were shot in the famous water tank – called B Tank, capable of holding 914,023 gallons of water – at Paramount Pictures. Nimoy, sporting Spock’s white robe, oversaw the proceedings as the cast stood astride the downed Bird of Prey, wind machines whipped water all around, lightning machines crackled and cameras rolled. At one point, James Doohan slipped and flopped into the water. Everyone on set got a laugh out of it, including Doohan, who was unhurt. That particular take is not in the resulting scene in the movie, but check out the end-credits sequence that recaps the film. Nimoy – or maybe his film editor – snuck it in there.

Anyway, 29 years later, the film holds up beautifully. It looks and sounds fantastic. Wrath of Khan is far more dramatic, of course, and it’s inarguably purer Star Trek, but, for our money, The Voyage Home wins the honor of being the best original- cast Star Trek film. Startrek.com
