Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    An International “Trade in Services Agreement” (TISA)? Why this Proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Services is Dangerous to Democracy, Development, and the Public Interest, and Must Be Stopped! March 2015 What is the proposed TISA? At the beginning of 2012, about 20 members (counting the EU as one) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) calling themselves “The Really Good Friends of Services” (RGF) launched secret unofficial talks towards drafting a treaty that would further liberalize trade and investment in services, and expand “regulatory disciplines” on all services sectors, including many public services. The “disciplines,” or treaty rules, would provide foreign services providers free access to domestic markets at “no less favorable” conditions than domestic suppliers and would restrict governments’ ability to regulate services. This would essentially change the regulation of many public and privatized or commercial services from serving the public interest to serving the profit interests of private, foreign corporations. Negotiations occurred in 2013-2014 in conjunction with the meetings of the Council on Trade in Services in the WTO, with the aim of finalizing very ambitious agreement on far-reaching services liberalization and disciplining government. The Really Good Friends of Services currently include Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Uruguay, the U.S., and the 28 member states of the European Union. They are also pushing for parallel talks on the liberalization of services in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) through the re-start of the Doha Round.

    IN THE MOUNTIES WE TRUST: A Study of Royal Canadian Mounted Police Accountability by STEPHEN LORENZ WETTLAUFER A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada July, 2011 Copyright © Stephen Lorenz Wettlaufer, 2011 Abstract Police and Canadian citizens often clash during protests sometimes resulting in violent outcomes. Due to the nature of those altercations, there are few other events that require oversight more than the way police clash with protesters and there is a history of such oversight resulting in a number of Federal Parliamentary documents, Parliamentary Committee reports Task Force reports, reports arising from Public Interest Hearings of the Commission for Complaints Against the RCMP, and testimony at various hearings and inquiries which have produced particular argumentative discourses. Argumentative discourses that have a great effect on the construction of a civilian oversight agency of the RCMP is the focus of this thesis. This thesis examines how it is that different discourses, as represented by argumentative themes in these reports, intersect with one another in the process of creating a system of accountability for the RCMP. Through the lens of complaints that arise from protest and police clashes one may conclude that the current system of accountability does not adhere to a practice of protecting the most fundamental rights as prescribed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; nor would the currently proposed legislation contained within Bill C‐38 alter the system in a substantial way to allow for such protections. The power dynamic between the Commissioner of the Force and the Commission for Complaints Against the RCMP favours the police force in the current and proposed system.

Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Moore The dissertation is divided into two sections: an essay titled “The Self-ish Genre: Questions of Authorial Selfhood and Ethics in Creative Nonfiction” and an essay collection titled, Person, Place, and Thing. “The Self-ish Genre: Questions of Authorial Selfhood and Ethics in Creative Nonfiction” engages with late modern and postmodern theories of selfhood in the service of moving towards an understanding of the ethical nature of the authorial character in the personal essay. I will position the authorial character within the framework of Paul Ricouer’s construction of the narrative self, identifying it as an artifact of the work of giving an account of oneself. I will consider how this artifact can be imagined to function inside a Levinasian ethics, and ask whether or not the authorial character can adequately serve as an “Other” with whom both the reader interacts in their own formations of self. Finally, I will turn to Judith Butler to suggest a way the ethical act of giving an account of oneself can be rescued from the postmodern disposition of the self.

International snowboard pro riders will take part in the Slopestyle and Halfpipe disciplines in the World Cup on Crap Sogn Gion, where they will demonstrate top-class freestyle skills and vie for points, prize money and prestige. This was confirmed this week during the digital FIS conference. The FIS has announced that the 2020/2021 tour will go ahead thanks to a compact concept, with the freestyle World Cup circuit taking place in the form of a safe bubble through close cooperation with the local organizers. The FIS Snowboard World Cup in LAAX takes place as part of the European package at the beginning of the new year. LAAX has been leading the way in freestyle for over three decades and has been voted the ‘World’s Best Freestyle Resort’ by the public and jury four years in a row at the World Ski Awards. The multiple-awarded resort continues to step forward as a freestyle trailblazer even in extraordinary times and is taking every step necessary to ensure a safe winter season and World Cup. During the summer, LAAX confirmed to its association partners that it would make no compromises when it comes to sport and would continue to organise the competitions for women and men in both Slopestyle and Halfpipe. There is a huge undertaking involved in getting everything set up perfectly, but this decision is a commitment for the riders and their sport.
