Top Down with the Editor by Glenn Owens Well, it is getting warmer in the St Louis area, but when we left the house for this drive, the water in the bird bath was still frozen. The sun came out and it warmed up some, but 45 ° can still be rather brisk at 50 miles/hour. Christine and I were dressed for the weather and we had a great time with nearly 30 other cars as we headed south to Elephant Rocks Park. The drive was organized by the Jaguar club who graciously invited other clubs to join with them. Another plug for the club’s driving challenge. The Jaguar Club invited other clubs to take part in their trip to Elephant Rocks Park on Saturday, March 16th. There were lots of cars in the well-planned drive. Most of the 29 cars were either Jaguars or Mazda Miatas, but there were other cars of note. The most significant was a 1925 Rolls Royce.

This beautiful car actually set the pace for a good portion of the trip, even on the most crooked parts of the trip. The weather was sunny, albeit rather cool. As always, my wife was well-dressed for the weather and the MGA was topless. We had a great time. We had another obligation in the afternoon so we could not continue after the stop at Elephant Rocks. We headed back to St Louis and clocked just over 180 miles. We will do this again next year if we’re invited. Life is good.

We met at the St Louis Bread Company across from Mercy South Hospital. Above: Mark Morgan is signing in with Jim Hendricks, one of the planners from the Jaguar Club.

T HE S T . L OUIS M G M ETRO G AZETTE P AGE 12 Terry Fanning Rally Several changes to the original plans for this year’s rally. At first we were going to ferry across the Mississippi and have lunch at Pere Marquette in Grafton, IL, but the flooding stopped that. Then, a bike race closed off part of the intended route. Bob Horzmann/Bob Bentzinger made it all work great. Except for two breakdowns. (More on that, later.)

We met at the parking lot at Boones Crossing. Six of the nine cars were running with- out a navigator. This makes it tough to compete.

This was my first rally with- out a navigator. Christine was obligated to attend a baby shower on this day, so I had to go it alone. I was the oldest member of the group and I was driving the oldest car. I would like to say that my MGA ran perfectly for the entire 95 miles of my drive. Yeah, that’s what I’d like to say. However, for the truth of the matter, let me first remind you that the route had been changed because a bike race event had closed one of the roads. When we got to that section, the bike race had just ended and this race must have had more onlookers and support staff than the Tour de France, because that narrow, two-lane road was crowded with vehicles. My MGA was purring along fine until the half way point of a long, steep hill. It sputtered….and quit. Traffic both ways; no shoulder and only those on the downhill were moving. (continued on next page)

Bob Horzmann to the rescue with his pick-up truck and a nylon tow strap. Quickly connected, we pulled to the top of the hill and into a service station lot. Most of the members were there for support. We looked under the hood and poked at the carburetors’ linkage. That didn’t seem to do anything, but then one of the crew suggested that I try to start it again. It fired instantly and it has run perfectly ever since. It’s always exciting to drive an LBC. I’m sorry to say that nobody took any photos of the situation when we had traffic blocked behind us. I had actually thought about it, but I thought it was better for those stuck in the traffic if they saw me trying to get the car out of the traffic rather than taking photos. Speaking of photos, take a close look at the photo at the top. Bob’s truck really makes those LBCs look ever so small. The other photo shows Bob scoring the rally sheets. For those of you who did not take part, this would have been a great trial run for the Ramble Along Rallye on April 6th. Sign up! For those of you who have read to this point, thanks for your support of the newsletter and you may recall that in the first paragraph, I mentioned that there were two breakdowns. The other one was Jim and Tina Vivian’s MGB, but their “breakdown” was inconsequential as it did not block traffic or require towing. They had stopped to read a plaque to get answers for the rally sheet and when they got back into their car, it would not start. Jim said he was not very optimistic as he opened the bonnet, but he quickly noticed that the coil wire had come loose. A five second fix and they were back on track. All-in-all, it was a great time and just like the Marines, we never leave anybody behind. Come join us next time. Life is good.

The Chicago Swap Meet Photo by Andy Ackerman by Andy Ackerman

It had the look of spring when four of us left St. Louis at 4 am to make a speed trip to The Swap Meet and Autojumble at the DuPage County Fair- grounds in Wheaton, IL, but in Coal City, IL, it had the makings of a blizzard. Although the goings were treacherous for a short time, we made it safe- ly to enjoy the vast array of used British car parts in two separate buildings. Tasked with finding spe- cific parts for other members of the club, we came up short on an overdrive transmission but man- aged to find bits of odds and ends that we could not pass up.

Members of the group were, Lee Fox, Tom Hurlbert, Bob Photo by Bob Bentzinger Bentzinger, and Andy Ackerman. John Mangles of All British Car Repair had arrived earlier and had a booth of excess inventory with Robert Rushing adding some help in manning the table. The show pretty much wraps up by 1pm so we decided to visit a great BBQ place on the way out for some good brisket and pulled pork. We did not come home with some real bargains this time, but it is always a fun time and we even made it home in time for dinner.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back into your pocket.

Prince Charles is used to being chauffeur-driven in a convoy on royal tours, but on March 26th, 2019, he took to the driver’s seat to embrace Cuba’s love of classic cars. The heir to the throne took the wheel of a beautifully restored, 66-year-old MG TD—a rare sight on an island where many still drive American Cadillacs, Chevrolets and Dodges. With his wife Camilla by his side, the 70-year-old prince drove to the classic car event in Havana’s John Lennon Park to the sounds of the Beatles ringing out of the nearby Yellow Submarine bar. Looking the part in sunglasses and a linen suit, the prince pulled up tentatively and stopped, before helping Camilla, 71, out of the passenger seat. Charles told onlookers: “The one I was driving is the most beautiful car. The gas pedal is incredibly close to the brake so you have to be careful you don’t press the wrong one.” Story by Camilla Tominey, Royal Correspondent, in Havana For the rest of the story— https:// www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2019/03/26/prince-charles-camilla-tour-streets- havana-vintage-mg-td/

The following message was received by the editor of the Metro Gazette...a plea for help: Hi, long time ol’ MG buddies, I am sending this appeal to a whole bunch of MG guys & gals that might have knowledge of the whereabouts of Arnolt Bertone MGs. The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance is certainly the most prestigious event in the Northeast and during the first weekend of June,2019 will be featuring a class for Arnolt Bertone MG’s and Arnolt Bristol’s. Last year, they had a tribute to Briggs Cunningham, his life and his cars and they managed to get all 27 Cunningham C3’s ever produced! Some of these were shipped in from overseas and of course Jay Leno’s C3 was there. They even had Briggs Cun- ningham’s 12 meter Yacht, Columbia, tied up to the adjacent dock, looking every bit as fresh as when it won the America’s cup race in 1958. Many years ago, I made an effort to keep track of these cars, but at this time I am only aware of a few. I fully realize that for west coast folks, this would be a long and costly haul, but it’s bound to be an event to be long remembered. Arnolt MG owners without restored cars should plan to attend anyway even without their car. This would certainly be an educational event for all owners.

Can anyone provide nice quality photos of restored cars? A number of you guys had original sales brochures. Could you send quality digital photos for publicity purposes? st The deadline for applications is March 31 . Please let me have any contact details or leads that you might be able to provide. Check out their website at greenwichconcours.com Time is truly of the essence, particularly if cars are nearing completion.

Cheers—Chris Nowlan [email protected]

************************ Chicago-based Stanley Arnolt ran a small string of successful local foreign car dealerships. While attending the 1952 Turin auto show, Arnolt was impressed by some Bertone designs on display and struck up a rapport with old man Giovanni. Arnolt would go on to sell a number of Bertone coach built cars under his name, including the Arnolt Aston, Arnolt Bentley, and Arnolt Bristol. It all started with the MG TD-based Arnolt MG and despite being built around a British-supplied chassis and Italian-built body, final assembly was done in Chicago, and the cars were considered domestics.

The photo to the right is Andy’s entry from last month’s challenge which was somehow lost in the electronic transfer. Andy will get credit for the month of February. You may have noticed that this photo was also used on the Chairman’s Message on page 6. Also, take a look at page 18 to see Rob and Allen, published by MOSS.

In the 1990s, it was reported that a new one was opened somewhere in the world every 5 hours. For the month of April, it’s your challenge to take a photo of your car at any city park. Submitting a photo of your car at the Easter Car Show will not be an acceptable entry. Take your photo on another day at a park...with the top down!
