Festival of Lessons and Carols

Shove Memorial Chapel

December 9, 2012 6:00 pm

Festival of Lessons and Carols Ave Maria The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a candlelight Advent service of readings interspersed with appropriate carols, hymns and anthems that is modeled after the traditional service at King’s College, Cambridge, England. The service has been celebrated at Colorado College for fifty-one years. Shove Memorial Chapel was dedicated on November 24, 1931, and at the request of the donor is “open for services of any and all denominations.” Shove Chapel continues a tradition of hospitality to persons of all faiths.

The theme of this year’s service, “Ave Maria,” is reflected in the anthems, carols and readings that honor Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

(translation) The Angelic Salutation Hail, Mary, mother of grace! Thus sang the angels to the virgin Mary As she struggled in prayer. Mary, you shall conceive a son. Heaven and Earth desire For you to be the Mother of the Lord. It came a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half spent was the night. Isaiah had foretold it, the Rose I have in mind, With Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind. Magnificat anima mea Dominum. (translation) My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy. As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Harriet Jacobs, Soprano

FOURTH LESSON Elijah Douresseau, '13 Matthew 1:18 – 24 An angel reassures Joseph

* CAROL O Little Town of Bethlehem Phillips Brooks, 1868 O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond’ring love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth. How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is giv’n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav’n. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us to-day. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!

* CAROL What Child Is This Greensleeves English Melody, 16th Century What Child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear: for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh, Come, peasant, king, to own Him: The King of Kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone Him. This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

SIXTH LESSON Ben Grund, '14 Luke 2:8 – 20 The shepherds go to the manger

* CAROL Once in Royal David’s City Henry J. Gauntlett, 1858 Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother ild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heave, who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy. And, thro’ all his wondrous childhood, he would honor and obey, Love, and watch the lowly maiden in whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; For that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heav’n above; And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night! holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts, sing: “Alleluia; Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.” Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
