Guest artists this year vary from a Pulitzer Prize-winning author to nationally known musicians and highly accomplished local professionals. This is in addition to artistic performances of students and community. In this year’s music performances we are bringing an eclectic mix including jazz, blues, folk music, Dixieland, Argentinian tango, and chamber music. Paired with introspective lyrics that echo both bitter and sweet, her music will captivate you then stay with you. “Moen is one of those rare artists whose voice, from the first moment you hear it, consumes your entire being, doing away with all previous thoughts and concerns, and leaving you short of breath.” – THE CULTURE TRIP elizabethmoen.com Tango Underground Masterclass 5PM October 23 Concert 7:30 PM, Fine Arts Theatre Five St. Louis musicians with various musical backgrounds have come together to form the unique lineup that is Tango Underground. The musicians are Peter Henderson on piano, Jeffrey Collins on bandoneon, Amy Greenhalgh on violin, Dan Rubright on guitar and Ben Wheeler on bass. The band is modeled after Astor Piazzolla’s own Argentinian tango quintet and features his arrangements just as they were played by Piazzolla himself. What makes the music and ensemble unique is the instrumentation and blend of styles. Peter, Amy, and Jeffrey are all classical players who frequently perform with the St. Louis Symphony and other orchestras nationwide. Dan and Ben bring years of jazz improvisation and composition experience to the group. Jeffrey, mostly known as a reed player and doubler, has taken on the bandoneon which has become the voice of the tango worldwide. The bandoneon, a complicated and challenging instrument, began its life in Germany and soon found its way to Argentina and the tango community. The instrumentation and blend of tango, modern jazz, classical music, rock and avant-garde elements creates a sound that Tango Underground brings to life with a synergy all their own. tango-underground.wixsite.com/tango 3 Tickets $5 general admission • $2 students/seniors Regina Carter & Xavier Davis Masterclass 3:30 PM November 5 Concert 7 PM, Fine Arts Theatre A recipient of the MacArthur “Genius Grant” Award and a Doris Duke Artist Award, Regina Carter has been widely hailed for her mastery of the violin and her drive to expand its possibilities. A winner of multiple readers’ and critics’ poll awards from DownBeat, JazzTimes, and other publications, Regina tours with her own group and has appeared frequently as a guest soloist, including with such performers as Kenny Barron, the late bassist Ray Brown, Akua Dixon, Steve Turre, Stefon Harris, George Wein, Mary J. Blige, Joe Jackson, Billy Joel, Dolly Parton, Omara Portuondo, Cassandra Wilson, and Chieli Minucci and Special EFX. She is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Xavier Davis is one of the most accomplished jazz pianists world wide. Muller. Named after the once-famous Arcadia Ballroom (“On Olive, near Grand”), The Arcadia Dance Orchestra specializes in recreating the music of 1920s/30s St. Louis. The group consists (at its largest) of 12 musicians playing era-correct instruments, each employing techniques of playing and soloing pulled from multiple historical resources to bring tunes from St. Louis’ musical past alive. Each Arcadia Dance Orchestra performance is packed full of local history as the band guides the audience through a musical soundscape of 1920s/30s St.
