How do British Muslims who have Same-Sex-Attractions negotiate their Identity? MA Islam in Contemporary Britain 2018 Hasnan Hussain 1 Abstract: This dissertation is the outcome of a research project I conducted exploring how five British Muslim males who have same-sex-attractions negotiate their identities. I situate this research within a wider need of amplifying the voices of same-sex-attracted British Muslims (SSABMs) who become marginalised and excluded, both within Muslim communities and within wider media discourses surrounding Islam and homosexuality. Exploring the academic literature on SSABMs, I note that academic discourses are one of the very few means through which the lives of SSABMs are honestly and representatively portrayed. However, I note that the sampling strategies utilised within this research limit the kinds of SSABM populations that can be represented in this research. I thus demonstrate how I have sought to counteract these limitations through the methodologies that I had adopted. The utilisation of these methodologies enabled me to access a diverse sample which included SSABM voices which had not been documented in the academic literature in much detail before. This can be seen, for example, in the passing of important legislations, such as the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientations) Regulations (2003), the Civil Partnerships Act (2004), and the Equality Act (sexual orientations) legislation (2010). -

IJRESS Volume 2, Issue 12 (December 2012) ISSN: 2249-7382 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND LEGAL STATUS OF THIRD GENDER IN INDIAN SOCIETY Preeti Sharma* ABSTRACT The terms third gender and third sex describe individuals who are categorized as neither man or woman as well as the social category present in those societies who recognize three or more genders. To different cultures or individuals, a third gender or six may represent an intermediate state between men and women, a state of being both. The term has been used to describe hizras of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan who have gained legal identity, Fa'afafine of Polynesia, and Sworn virgins of the Balkans, among others, and is also used by many of such groups and individuals to describe themselves like the hizra, the third gender is in many cultures made up of biological males who takes on a feminine gender or sexual role. Disowned by their families in their childhood and ridiculed and abused by everyone as ''hijra'' or third sex, eunuchs earn their livelihood by dancing at the beat of drums and often resort to obscene postures but their pain and agony is not generally noticed and this demand is just a reminder of how helpless and neglected this section of society is. Thousands of welfare schemes have been launched by the government but these are only for men and women and third sex do not figure anywhere and this demand only showed mirror to society. The Constitution gives rights on the basis of citizenship and on the grounds of gender but the gross discrimination on the part of our legislature is evident. -

A Jurisprudence of "Coming Out": Religion, Homosexuality, and Collisions of Liberty and Equality in American Public Law William N. Eskridge, Jr.! Conflicts among religious and ethnic groups have scored American cultural and political history. Some of these conflicts have involved campaigns of suppression against deviant religious and minority ethnic groups by the mainstream. Although the law has most often been deployed as an instrument of suppression, there is now a public law consensus to preserve and protect the autonomy of religious and ethnic subcultures, as well as the ability of their members to self-identify without penalty. One thesis of this Essay is that this vaunted public law consensus should be extended to sexual orientation minorities as well. Like religion, sexual orientation marks both personal identity and social divisions.' In this century, in fact, sexual orientation has steadily been replacing religion as the identity characteristic that is both physically invisible and morally polarizing. In 1900, one's group identity was largely defined by one's ethnicity, social class, sex, and religion. The norm was Anglo-Saxon, middle-class, male, and Protestant. The Jew, Roman Catholic, or Jehovah's Witness was considered deviant and was subject to social, economic, and political discrimination. In 2000, one's group identity will be largely defined by one's race, income, sex, and sexual orientation. The norm will be white, middle-income, male, and heterosexual. Journal of Global Buddhism Vol. 18 (2017): 112–128 Special Focus: Buddhists and the Making of Modern Chinese Societies Buddhism and Global Secularisms David L. McMahan, Franklin and Marshall College Abstract: Buddhism in the modern world offers an example of (1) the porousness of the boundary between the secular and religious; (2) the diversity, fluidity, and constructedness of the very categories of religious and secular, since they appear in different ways among different Buddhist cultures in divergent national contexts; and (3) the way these categories nevertheless have very real-world effects and become drivers of substantial change in belief and practice. Drawing on a few examples of Buddhism in various geographical and political settings, I hope to take a few modest steps toward illuminating some broad contours of the interlacing of secularism and Buddhism. In doing so, I am synthesizing some of my own and a few others’ research on modern Buddhism, integrating it with some current research I am doing on meditation, and considering its implications for thinking about secularism. This, I hope, will provide a background against which we can consider more closely some particular features of Buddhism in the Chinese cultural world, about which I will offer some preliminary thoughts. 22 Indriya DEFINITION: Indriya: Literally, ―Belonging to Indra‖, a Chief Deity
Abhidharmakosa Chapter 2: Indriyas (Faculties) Overview: Chapter 2 continues the analysis of Chapter 1 in laying out the basic underlying principles of the Abhidharma approach. Chapter 2 begins with an exposition of the indriyas which continues the treatment of traditional teaching categories from Chapter 1 (which analyzed skandhas, ayatanas and dhatus). After the analysis of the indriyas (see below for summary and table), Vasubandhu lays out the dharmas associated and not associated with mind along the lines of the less traditional Panca-vastuka (five groups) formulation (this was an later Abhidharma development). To some extent, Chapter 1 covered the rupa (material form) group of dharmas, as well as the mind/consciousness (citta/vijnana) group (just 1 dharma). The unconditioned dharmas are treated in both chapter 1 and 2. Chapter 2 then unfolds the mental dharmas and the dharmas not associated with mind (which comprise the 4th skandha: samskaras). By treating the indriyas first, Vasubandhu may be trying to give a more sutra-based foundation to the exposition of the samskaras before unfolding the later Panca-vastuka formulation. After the analysis of the indriyas below, there is a study of the 75 dharmas (and some thoughts on the development of ―dharma lists‖. As the dharmas are not things, but functions or causal forces, Vasubandhu follows up the exposition of the dharmas with a treatment of causality (K48-73, see overview below). 22 Indriya DEFINITION: Indriya: literally, ―belonging to Indra‖, a chief deity. Indriya comes to connote supremacy, dominance, control, power and strength. Soothill‘s definition of the Chinese: ―根 mūla, a root, basis, origin; but when meaning an organ of sense, indriyam, a 'power', 'faculty of sense, sense, organ of sense'.
