This Guide outlines the applicable Council procedures and processes, provides helpful hints, and addresses many of the questions that scouts and leaders have about the process. We urge you to read and become thoroughly familiar with the contents of this guide. Life to Eagle Trail Introduction CONGRATULATIONS for earning Life Scout Rank! Look around your Troop – not a lot of heart-shaped badges to be seen, are there? At each stop on Scouting’s Advancement Trail, fewer and fewer Scouts remain from the group you started with as a Tenderfoot Scout. You have traveled high on Scouting’s Trail to Eagle. You are just one step away from the highest and most prestigious rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout. Why should you go on to Eagle? As Sir Edmund Hillary replied when asked why he climbed Mt. Everest, “Because it’s there!” You are so close now that not going on will be the cause of regret in the future. The main reason to continue is for your own personal sense of meeting an enormous challenge – completing the requirements that few earn. Achieving Eagle Scout Rank is a symbol of achievement recognized throughout the country. -

2020 Massabesic Klondike Derby Rules, Instructions, and Information
2020 Massabesic Klondike Derby Rules, Instructions, and Information (Patrol Leaders, Unit Leaders and station staff should read and know before the event. Be aware changes have been made since last year.) The Klondike Derby is a test of scout skills and of the patrol method. If your troop routinely practices traditional scout skills and is “scout-led”, you’ll find nothing unfamiliar with what is expected of you to score well. No matter your score, your participation in this event will help make you a better troop and will strengthen the bonds that make good patrols. Ideally, scouts will learn their strengths and weaknesses and have a fun weekend. We are very proud of all our participants. CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS: Senior patrols have been eliminated in favor of a rank handicapping system. In previous years, patrols of higher ranking scouts were segregated into a “senior” division. However, they still completed the same challenges as “regular” patrols at all stations, and typically only a very small number of patrols were identified as a senior patrol. This year all patrols will be handicapped based on the ranks of patrol members, which will level the playing field for all patrols. Details of the handicapping system are described in the scoring section below. Patrols should be “natural” patrols as much as possible; if natural patrols need to be merged to crew a Klondike sled, efforts should be made to average out ranks as much as possible. Troops must submit a patrol roster including each scout’s rank at registration, at which time the patrol’s handicap will be determined. -
The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century
“No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century by Kevin Woodger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Kevin Woodger 2020 “No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century Kevin Woodger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Abstract This dissertation examines the Canadian Cadet Movement and Boy Scouts Association of Canada, seeking to put Canada’s two largest uniformed youth movements for boys into sustained conversation. It does this in order to analyse the ways in which both movements sought to form masculine national and imperial subjects from their adolescent members. Between the end of the First World War and the late 1960s, the Cadets and Scouts shared a number of ideals that formed the basis of their similar, yet distinct, youth training programs. These ideals included loyalty and service, including military service, to the nation and Empire. The men that scouts and cadets were to grow up to become, as far as their adult leaders envisioned, would be disciplined and law-abiding citizens and workers, who would willingly and happily accept their place in Canadian society. However, these adult-led movements were not always successful in their shared mission of turning boys into their ideal-type of men. The active participation and complicity of their teenaged members, as peer leaders, disciplinary subjects, and as recipients of youth training, was central to their success. -

Retaining Our Young Men in Scouting
Retaining our Young Men in Scouting A research thesis submitted to the College of Commissioner Science California Inland Empire Council Boy Scouts of America in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Commissioner Science Degree by Craig Murray 2011 PREFACE I have served as a volunteer scouter for over 24 years, mainly as a Scoutmaster and Post/Crew Advisor. I have been fortunate in that I have been a leader at six scouting events in other countries: Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Austria and Great Britain. During each of these events, I took the time to understand scouting in the host countries, as well as in the countries visiting the events. Over those 24 years, I have observed scouting environments where scouts were motivated to stay involved in scouting, and I have also seen situations where they did not want to stay involved. From my experience and research, I have found that retention is greatest when young adults can retain peer relationships. This thesis will discuss senior scouting history, current problems, survey results taken in a 2011 Philmont Training Center course “Building Strong Packs, Troops, Teams and Crews” and proposed training. 1 Historical Background Even in the very early years of scouting, Baden-Powell (BP) came to realize that the scouting program should address the challenge of boys under 12 being interested in scouting but not being eligible to join, and boys over 16 leaving the program. Incorporating the younger boys into the program was reasonably easy in Great Britain. In 1916, BP started a Wolf Cub program. -
