Conductor Candidate Recently appointed to assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony, Wilbur Lin will be serving as the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras in addition to continuing his work as the artistic director of the summer seasons of the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei. Lin began his musical education at the age of five. In 2008, the Taiwanese-American conductor founded a student orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei, which is now a professional chamber orchestra with an active annual summer season funded by both the Arts Council of Taipei and the Taiwanese Ministry of Culture. Lin briefly worked as assistant conductor at Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Taiwan Symphony orchestras. He regularly works with Chamber Philharmonic Taipei and has conducted the Manchester Camerata, MAV Symphony Orchestra (Budapest), Taipei Philharmonic, Taiwan Symphony, Orquestra de Cadaqués (Spain), Missouri Symphony, and Windsor Symphony (Canada) orchestras. As a pianist, Lin coached and performed with the Indianapolis Opera, IU Opera Theater, and Reimagining Opera for Kids, in addition to his freelance work as a vocal coach and collaborator. A recent graduate of Riccardo Muti’s Italian Opera Academy, Lin’s recent highlights include conducting Verdi’s Macbeth at Teatro Alighieri (Ravenna, Italy), Die Zauberflöte with the Winter Harbor Festival & Opera (Winter Harbor, Maine), and an appearance with Canada’s Windsor Symphony Orchestra, guest conducting El Salvador’s National Youth Orchestra, and the conclusion of Chamber Philharmonic Taipei’s seventh concert in its Bach Cantata Series. Lin held the position of Lord Rhodes Scholar from 2013 to 2014, was a two-time recipient of Mortimer Furber Prize for Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), and holds a doctoral degree from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Lin has studied with Arthur Fagen and David Effron at IU, Clark Rundell and Mark Heron at RNCM, and Apo Hsu at National Taiwan Normal University. We can think of no better way to celebrate the good things in life than by offering our community the opportunity to hear a wonderfully wide range of music, performed by an enthusiastic group of talented, dedicated musicians. The last 48 years has seen the LCSO evolve into a major cultural asset in the region. Comprised of over 60 local musicians, the semi-professional orchestra is dedicated to enriching the lives of people of all ages throughout the year. In addition to its regular season concerts in November, March, and April, the LCSO presents the annual Holiday at the Pops, an event that has become a time-honored community tradition. Another much-anticipated annual event is Hoosier STAR, a singing competition that gives talented vocalists a chance to perform before a live orchestra and an appreciative audience. During the warmer months, the LCSO can be seen performing at outside venues such as La Porte’s Fox Park, New Buffalo Lake Park and Beach, Michigan City’s Washington Park and the Friendship Botanical Gardens 70+ on U.S. 12. He holds both the degrees Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music from Valparaiso University, and has done advanced study at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and VanderCook College of Music. Mr. Steck has been Instructor of Trumpet at Valparaiso University since 1990, teaching exceptional taste, studio trumpet and trumpet choir. In 2016 he became Instructor of Trumpet at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where he teaches trumpet and brass ensemble. He also teaches students at Lakeshore High school, Portage High School, and the Culver Academy, as well as in La Porte. great design, Mr. Steck performs regularly as a trumpeter with the St. Joseph (Michigan) Municipal Band, where he has been featured trumpet and vocal soloist on numerous occasions. Since 2003, he has served as Principal Trumpet of the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra, as well. He is also a long-time trumpet and vocalist with the Tom Milo Big Band.     Introduction Anger is an enduringly problematic theme in literature, a rush of cognition concentrated through pain. This emotion can be understood as creation by negation: it comes into existence when its subject is belittled or negated. Anger builds its walls around the angry man or woman and blinds them with its power. The importance of studying anger comes from the fundamental role it plays in shaping critical reactions in daily experiences that either construct or destroy the lives of human beings. These reactions differ according to each individual. Sometimes, anger is equally an indiscriminate and an elective emotion. It is the desire to retaliate in response to an injury. It is a conspiracy against the self as much as against others, an emotion which richly furnishes the great body of literature and philosophy that is traditionally associated with it. The power of anger expresses itself as an obsessive dialogue between the voice of the injured, their injury, and that of the injurer. This thesis will provide a reading of anger in Elizabethan revenge tragedy which focuses on the relationship between the destructive and creative potentials of this emotion. In a sense, the choice of anger as an object of study is hardly voluntary. This subject selects its students as much as they select it. I am especially fascinated with the subject of anger due to its magnetic power, the authority that is connected to its dangerous and violent nature. The blind irrational feeling of self-righteousness that surges throughout the angry individual inspires the reader or writer of its narrative to wonder about the nature of this emotion.

    NODAME CANTABILE: A JAPANESE TELEVISION DRAMA AND ITS PROMOTION OF WESTERN ART MUSIC IN ASIA Yu-Ting Tung A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2009 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Robert Fallon © 2009 Yu-Ting Tung All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor The fictional Japanese TV drama series, Nodame Cantabile (!"#$%&'()), based on the lives of Western art music performance majors in a Japanese music conservatory, has successfully reached out and appealed to the Japanese common audience since it was first aired in Japan in October, 2006. It has also attracted an international following, been aired in various Asian countries (including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia), and found mass audiences beyond national boundaries. Why is a TV drama depicting such a specific group (i.e. music majors) able to cater to a mass audience in Japan and even to millions of viewers beyond Japan? In this thesis, I will argue that Nodame Cantabile not only has the typical prerequisites to be a successful Japanese TV drama, it also enchants its spectators by employing a unique, almost unprecedented approach—using Western art music as the thematic music and main soundtrack— which results in a whimsical, sensational, cross-cultural success. By contrast, most music in similar drama series uses Japanese pop music and electronic music. I will decode how this drama attracts mass audiences by interpreting/elucidating it from different perspectives, including: 1) how it portrays/reflects the Japanese music conservatory culture; 2) how it reflects the long-term popularity of certain Western art music compositions in/among Japanese music consumers; and, most interestingly; 3) how this drama further changes the perception of mass audiences, especially fans in Taiwan, about Western art music, and serves to increase the popularity of this music in Asian countries.
