Sheep and beef farms will have the animals grazing outdoors on pasture and only brought indoors and fed meals during lambing season and calving season or during the part of winter when outdoor conditions are too harsh.

    NORTH AMERICA Managing Potassium for Organic Crop Production By Robert Mikkelsen An adequate K supply is essential for both organic and conventional crop production. Potas- sium is involved in many plant physiological reactions, including osmoregulation, protein synthesis, enzyme activation, and photosynthate translocation. The K balance on many farms is negative, where more K is removed in harvested crops than is returned again to the soil. An overview of commonly used K fertilizers for organic production is provided. otassium is an essential nutrient for plant growth, but it often receives less attention than N and P in many crop Pproduction systems. Many regions of the U.S.A. and all of the Canadian provinces remove more K during harvest than is returned to the soil in fertilizer and manure (Figure 1). In the U.S.A., an average of only 3 units of K is replaced as fertilizer and manure for every 4 units of K removed in crops, resulting in a depletion of nutrients from the soil and increasing occur- rences of deficiency in many places. To determine the required level of supplementation, three identical aquaponic systems (A, B, and C) and one hydroponic system (D) were stocked with lettuce, mint, and mushroom herbs. The aquaponic systems were stocked with Nile tilapia. System A only received nutrients derived from fish feed; system B received nutrients from fish feed as well as weekly supplements of micronutrients and Fe; system C received the same nutrients as B, with weekly supplements of the macronutrients, P and K; in system D, a hydroponic inorganic solution containing N, Ca, and the same nutrients as system C was added weekly. Lettuce achieved the highest yields in system C, mint in system B, and mushroom herb in systems A and B. The present study demonstrated that the nutritional requirements of the mint and mushroom herb make them suitable for aquaponic farming because they require low levels of supplement addition, and hence little management effort, resulting in minimal cost increases.

Here we can plant lettuce, peas, turnips, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, parsley, potatoes, onions, garlic and many more vegetables in the fall. If you’ve a garden like mine, four plots double-dug and based on the bio-intensive system, your soil is tired. After a long summer season, a minimum of 1 inch of good home-made compost is in order. Two inches would be even better. If you’re like me, the Gardener is also tired after a long summer season. But if the garden is not replenished and just left fallow through the winter, there will be problems in the spring. The garden will still need compost and be overrun with weeds. Is there another route? Yes there is. A crop can be planted anytime root penetration and a grass or cereal crop in the fall which will choke out weeds and for bio mass and root penetration. Policy Brief - Verena Seufert 1 Executive summary We need drastic changes in the global food system in order to achieve a more sustainable agriculture that feeds people adequately, contributes to rural development and provides livelihoods to farmers without destroying the natural resource basis. Organic agriculture has been proposed as an important means for achieving these goals. Organic agriculture currently covers only a small area in developing countries but its extent is continuously growing as demand for organic products is increasing. Should organic agriculture thus become a priority in development policy and be put on the agenda of international assistance as a means of achieving sustainable agricultural development? Can organic agriculture contribute to sustainable food security in developing countries? In order to answer these questions this policy brief tries to assess the economic, social and environmental sustainability of organic agriculture and to identify its problems and benefits in developing countries. Organic agriculture shows several benefits, as it reduces many of the environmental impacts of conventional agriculture, it can increase productivity in small farmers’ fields, it reduces reliance on costly external inputs, and guarantees price premiums for organic products. Organic farmers also benefit from organizing in farmer cooperatives and the building of social networks, which provide them with better access to training, credit and health services.

    GREEN MANURES A review conducted by HDRA as part of HDC Project FV 299: An investigation into the adoption of green manures in both organic and conventional rotations to aid nitrogen management and maintain soil structure This review describes the evidence for the various beneficial effects of green manures, lists the relative merits of the main species that are suitable for use in the UK and considers some of the practical aspects of their use. This review forms part of an HDC funded project led by Vegetable Consultancy Services Ltd with HDRA as a subcontractor. The practical work involves field trials at four sites in East Anglia (two conventional, one organic and one in conversion) to be conducted between 2006 and 2008. The field trials will investigate the performance of different fertility building crops and their effects on subsequent cash crop yield, nitrogen dynamics and pest, disease and weed problems. Emily Dickinson Finally, the ground has thawed, my tulips have surfaced and I was able to get my cool-season vegetables in the garden. I planted leafy greens, carrots and beets and something new – garden peas. I am a novice pea grower. Growing up my mom always grew peas. I remember shelling them for dinner and used to get scolded for eating more peas then I put in the bowl. The peas I planted are an early maturing variety but I fear we might have a short growing season for peas this spring. Peas like it cool and plants stop producing when the weather turns hot. Peas can be planted as soon as the soil is able to be worked but this season many gardens are running late (and I thought ‘Punxsutawney Phil' predicted an early spring). Peas are a staple in many home gardens and have been widely cultivated for centuries. There are three main types of peas: garden pea, snow pea and snap pea. The garden or English pea is the traditional plant most commonly found in gardens. Pods are harvested when they are plump and the seeds are tender and sweet. The pod of garden peas is very fibrous and not edible. Snow peas, on the other hand, have edible pods and are usually harvested when the pods are long and flat with the seeds just starting to develop.

Previous studies had shown the value of intercropping maize with Desmodium uncinatum in the control of both pests. The current study was conducted to assess the potential role of other Desmodium spp., adapted to different agro-ecologies, in combined control of both pests in Kenya. Treatments consisted of intercropped plots of a Striga hermonthica- and stemborer-susceptible maize variety and one Desmodium sp. or cowpea, with a maize monocrop plot included as a control. S. hermonthica counts and stemborer damage to maize plants were significantly reduced in maize–desmodium intercrops (by up to 99.2% and 74.7%, respectively) than in a maize monocrop and a maize–cowpea intercrop. Similarly, maize plant height and grain yields were significantly higher (by up to 103.2% and 511.1%, respectively) in maize–desmodium intercrops than in maize monocrops or maize–cowpea intercrops. These results confirmed earlier findings that intercropping maize with D. uncinatum effectively suppressed S. hermonthica and stemborer infestations in maize resulting in higher crop yields.

    SOWING & ITS EQUIPMENT Seeding or sowing is an art of placing seeds in the soil to have good germination in the field. A perfect seeding gives a. Correct amount of seed per unit area. b. Correct depth at which seed is placed in the soil. c. Correct spacing between row-to-row and plant-to-plant. Sowing methods (i) Broadcasting Broadcasting is the process of random scattering of seed on the surface of seedbeds. It can be done manually or mechanically both. When broadcasting is done manually, uniformity of seed depends upon skill of the man. Soon after broadcasting the seeds are covered by planking or some other devices. Usually higher seed rate is obtained in this system. Mechanical broadcasters are used for large-scale work. This machine scatters the seeds on the surface of the seedbed at controlled rates. (ii) Dibbling Dibbling is the process of placing and seeds in holes made in seedbed and covering them. In this method, seeds are placed in holes make at definite depth at fixed spacing. The equipment used for dibbling is called dibbler. It is a conical instrument used to make proper holes in the field. Small hand dibblers are made with several conical projections made in a frame. This is very time consuming process, so it is not suitable for small seeds. Mostly vegetables are sown in this way. (iii) Drilling Drilling consists of dropping the seeds in furrow lines in a continuous flow and covering them with soil. Seed metering may be done either manually or mechanically. The number of rows planted may be one or more.
