DiMuccio1 and Eric D. Knowles1 Abstract Precarious manhood (PM) theory posits that males are expected to actively maintain their reputations as “real men.” We propose that men’s concern about failing to meet masculine standards leads them to embrace policies and politicians that signal strength and toughness—or what we term political aggression. Three correlational studies support this claim. In Study 1, men’s fear of failing to meet masculine expectations predicted their support for aggressive policies (e.g., the death penalty), but not policies lacking aggressive features (e.g., affirmative action). Studies 2 and 3 utilized Google searches to assess the relationship between regional levels of PM and real-world electoral behavior. The use of search terms related to masculine anxieties correlated with Donald Trump’s vote share in the 2016 general election (Study 2) and, confirming preregistered predictions, with Republican candidates’ vote shares in 2018 congressional elections (Study 3). We close by discussing potential sources of variation in PM. Keywords precarious manhood, masculinity, aggression, political attitudes, voting Received May 22, 2020; revision accepted September 14, 2020 Perhaps more than any politician in recent history, Donald Precarious Manhood Trump has rooted his political persona in traditional notions of masculinity.

  • Re Missing!: Local Podcast Explores Cultural Blindspots Nothing Missing with Tony (Left) and Matt (Right) Behind the Mic
SENE on Screen: The beloved film festival returns for its 13th year For more than a decade, the annual SENE (rhymes with scene) Film Festival has celebrated film, art and music, and this year’s festival, which takes place October 13 – 16, will screen 130 films from around the world. SENE was created by producing director Don Farias and artistic director Phil Capobres, who work to create a welcoming atmosphere for festival entrants and attendees. And their efforts paid off — for four years in a row, SENE was named one of the Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee by MovieMaker Magazine, one of the most respected voices in the film industry, and was rated one of the best reviewed festivals by FilmFreeway. The festival made its COVID comeback over the summer. “We were thrilled that we were able to host fun events for visiting filmmakers in June,” said Farias. “It’s the first time in over a year that the world felt almost normal. I was impressed with the attendance, especially since I was not sure if people were actually ready to leave their homes. It was nice to see the filmmakers meeting new friends at our networking events. Everyone was ready to collaborate and begin creating films again. We expect October to be bigger with more filmmakers attending.” SENE has been a powerful force in building community within the local film world, and while the festival receives films from all around the world, it makes a point to highlight all things local. The festival will kick off on Wednesday, October 13, with a special screening of local filmmaker Christian De Rezendes’ SLATERSVILLE, a much-anticipated episodic documentary on the 200-year history of the first industrialized mill village in the U.S., located in the heart of the Blackstone Valley.

  • ANTIDOTES to the Virtue-Signaling, Violence-Encouraging Ignorance, Arrogance and Intellectual Thuggery of Elitists in U.S
ANTIDOTES to the virtue-signaling, violence-encouraging ignorance, arrogance and intellectual thuggery of elitists in U.S. scientific and academic establishments Compiled by Stuart H. Hurlbert San Diego State University, San Diego, California, June 20, 2020 First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. -- Martin Niemöller, WW I German U-boat commander, Lutheran pastor, and, until 1934, supporter of the Third Reich An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody will see it. -- Mahatma Gandhi Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -- D.H. Lawrence We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would harm us. -- George Orwell (apocryphally) The mainstream media, many university administrations, large numbers of politicians on the left and, now, many scientific societies have declared that there is widespread systemic anti-black racism in law enforcement organizations, in academia, and in society in general. This is the most damaging, divisive, fact-deficient narrative being pushed by the illiberal left at this moment in the U.S.

To unsubscribe, please send a blank email with “unsubscribe” in the subject line to [email protected] It’s been a busy few months. I’m looking forward to taking the summer off and writing my book, Against Faith. Against Faith will, among other things, detail practical, conversational strategies you can use to help liberate people of the faith virus. I’ll examine actual recorded conversations in which the Socratic method was used as a cognitive intervention—removing the faith virus and replacing it with reason and rationality. To my knowledge, this is the first discussion of using the Socratic method to create, as opposed to rip down, beliefs. Next term I’ll be teaching the course I designed: Atheism. I’m looking forward to teaching this class, and especially to the guest lectures—I have a great lineup of Christian and Muslim apologists. Here’s what occupied my time these past two months: Center for Inquiry: CFI added me to their Speaker’s Bureau: http://www.centerforinquiry.net/speakers/boghossian_peter I’m honored to be officially associated with the national Center for Inquiry. Thank you. Lion’s Den: I participated in an invited online chat with George Fox Doctoral Candidates in Ministry. This was a conversation and not a debate. I was impressed with the thoughtful comments and the spirited discussion. My only regret is that I could not type quickly enough to answer everyone’s questions.

sigmanutrition.com DANNY LENNON: James, welcome to the podcast. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me today. JAMES LINDSAY: Yeah, I'm happy to be here. DANNY LENNON: We've got quite a bit of ground to cover and I've got plenty of things that I'm curious to hear your thoughts on. But before we get into anything, I suppose to give people a bit of context for the rest of this conversation, can you maybe give a bit of your background, maybe starting from an academic sense? JAMES LINDSAY: All right. So, I'll give a little background kind of starting with the most recent and then skipping backwards and filling in the blanks. So, I'm probably best well known, and I think this is what I got invited on for, for my participation in what has come to be known as a Grievance Studies affair. Last October, myself and two collaborators came public with a project we spent about a year and a half or so on in which we decided to examine the academic publishing within a bunch of fields that we kind of lumped under one term that we call the Grievance Studies. So, this would be gender studies, race studies, queer studies, fat studies, and a bunch of other things that are all kind of under the cultural studies monikers. So, what we did was decided to write a bunch of intentionally broken Page 1 © Sigma Nutrition sigmanutrition.com papers that either had bad methods or bad logic or bad data or terrible methodologies and tried to see if their peer review would be able to pick up on those flaws.

***Please do not cite. Use Published Version: 10.5840/radphilrev2020412110*** Propaganda and the Nihilism of the Alt-Right Abstract: The alt-right is an online subculture marked by its devotion to the execution of a racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic politics through trolling, pranking, meme-making, and mass murder. It is this devotion to far-right politics through the discordant conjunction of humor and suicidal violence this article seeks to explain by situating the movement for the first time within its constitutive online relationships. This article adds to the existing literature by viewing the online relationships of the alt-right through the genealogy of propaganda. Through situating the alt-right alongside the genealogy of propaganda, the article offers new insights into the social isolation, increasingly extreme social and political positions, nihilism, and violence that have emerged within the alt-right. The article concludes by applying the lessons of the alt-right for online organizing across the political spectrum and argues that a class-based politics of the left is an important part of countering the rise of the alt-right.
