Fen Causeway
Fen Causeway An important vehicular route which crosses the attractive rural spaces of Coe Fen and Sheep’s Green with views back towards the city. Fen Causeway was built in as one of the main routes the 1920s to link Newnham around Cambridge, but the village with Trumpington negative effect of this traffic Road and to provide access is mitigated by the pastural to the south of the city. Today the road is very busy Fen Causeway SIGNIFICANCE - SIGNIFICANT General Overview At its eastern end Fen Causeway passes between the large properties of the Leys School to the south and the Royal Cambridge Hotel and University Department of Engineering to the north. Although the hotel is built up against the pavement, the car parks to the rear provide a large open space, whilst the school and engineering department stand back from the road behind high walls. The setback makes the street a light space, although the high buildings to either side channel views along the street in both directions. The grounds on either side provide greenery that softens the streetscene. The Royal Cambridge Hotel North House of the Leys School provides architectural interest as part of the late Victorian Methodist School complex, built in red brick with exuberant stone and brick detailing which provides a strong vertical emphasis. -

Introduction THE INVENTORY The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (the MRA) is responsible for the urban renewal of the Central Perth Redevelopment Area (the Redevelopment Area) and proposes to recognise and afford protective measures to those places that have cultural heritage significance. The Central Perth Redevelopment Scheme (the Scheme) empowers the MRA to compile and maintain a list of Heritage Places and Precincts, called a Heritage Inventory (HI). The Central Perth HI has been developed in accordance with the provisions of the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990, which requires all Local Governments to compile an inventory of heritage places as the foundation of sound local heritage planning. As MRA assumes responsibility as the planning authority within the Redevelopment Area, the MRA is acknowledging its role and responsibilities in “recognising, promoting and protecting” the cultural heritage that falls under its jurisdiction, as articulated in the State Cultural Heritage Policy. -

NORTH FREMANTLE RAILWAY BRIDGE COLLAPSE 1926 An accident waiting to happen? Heather Campbell In July 1926 very heavy rains in the South West of Western Australia caused ‘extensive washaways’ in the railway system1 and were thought to be responsible for the collapse of the Fremantle Railway Bridge on 22 July of that year. This was the second railway bridge across the Swan River and had been opened in November 1895. The first bridge, completed in August 1880, was for construction traffic for the Fremantle – Perth – Guildford railway line. This second bridge, was more substantial than the first and capable of taking heavier locomotives.2 The condition of the bridge caused comment almost from its opening. In December 1897 concern was expressed about its stability due to dredging of the harbour, the strength of the tide and the potential for cargo boats and steamers to collide with it3. Again, in October 1903, ‘some alarm’ was expressed but the foundations were found to be safe and secure4. None the less, in August 1905 questions were again being asked about the ‘dangerous nature of the substructure’ of the bridge.5 Fremantle Railway Bridge and houses on Riverside Road, Fremantle, 1907 (SLWA 009669PD) Location of the 2nd railway bridge, c 1890s? (SLWA MAPR0000346) Its condition remained a concern and in 1911: ‘… a couple of engine-drivers got a sudden shock the other day when crossing it. They swore that they distinctly felt the bridge rocking beneath the train, and heard ominous noises. The matter was reported at once, and the station masters from Fremantle and North Fremantle procured an engine and investigated things. -
