ASSUMPTION OF ADMINISTRATION OF THE GOVERNMENT BY THE HONOURABLE SIR KENNETH WHISTLER STREET, K.C.M.G., LIEUTENANT-GoVERNoR:-The President reported and read the following Message from His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor: - K. W. STREET, Lieutenant-Governor. The Honourable Sir Kenneth Street, Lieutenant-Governor of the State of New South Wales, has the honour to inform the Legislative Council that, conse­ quent on Lieutenant-General Sir Eric Woodward ceasing to be Governor of New South Wales on the 31st July, 1965, he this morning took the Oath of Allegiance and the Official and Judicial Oath before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and assumed the administration of the f Government of the State. ',-/ , , Government House, Sydney, 3rd August, 1965. 5. PRESENCE OF THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR:--His Excellency the Lieutenant­ Governor, attended by Major-General T. J. Daly, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., Reax­ Admiral O. H. Becher, C.B.E., D.S.O., D.S.C., Air Vice-Marshal C. T. Hannilb, C.B., C.B.E., the Official Secretary (Lindsay Rose, Esq., O.B.E.), the Private , Secretary (Lieutenant·Colonel R. F. F. Gillespie), and the Aide-de·Camp (Lieutenant C. H. Longstaff), having been announced by the Usher of the Black Rod, and conducted to his seat by the President, accompanied by the· Vice­ President of the Executive Council, the Minister for Decentralisation and Development, and Officers of the House, commanded the Usher of the Black Rod to let the Legislative Assembly know that it is His Excellency's pleasure they attend biro immediately in this House. And the Assembly, with their Speaker and other Officers of the House, being in attendance accordingly, and seated by desire of His Excellency,- His Excellency read the following Speech:- <!' ... , I i I I 3 MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE LEGISLATNE COUNCIL (24 August, 1965) HONOURABLE M'EMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, AND MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY,- It is my pleasure aud privilege to address you today at the opening of the Second Session of the Forty-first. Parliament of New South Wales. After a period of eight years in office, Lieutenant-General Sir Eric Woodward relinquished his office as Governor on the 31st July, last. During these eight years. Sir Eric served the State as the representative of Her Majesty the Queen with dignity and distinction and carried out the duties and functions of his high office with a keen sense of responsibility and great ability. I am sure that Honourable Members and all the people of New South Wales join with me in extending to Sir Eric and Lady Woodward our best wishes for their health and happiness in their r~tirement. The General Election held earlier this year resulted in a new Ministry assuming office. My Ministers are deeply conscious of the trust which has been reposed in them by the people of this State and their efforts will be resolutely directed towards ensuring the general welfare of the people and the continued progress and development of the State. It is their firm intention ( to give effect to the policies on which they were· elected as quickly as practicable. I To those Members who have been newly elected to the Legislative Assembly I extend my congratulations on the opportunity afforded them of r devoting their talents and energies to the service of the community in the ( Parliament of this State. I,' Since the last meeting of this Parliament in May the deaths have occurred i of the Honourable Michael Thomas Leslie Quinn and the Honourable Leon Samuel Snider, Members of the Legislative Council. We mourn the passing I of these Members who rendered devoted and valued service in the public ) affairs of the State. I While employment and activity within the State in the fields of com­ f merce and secondary industry have generally continued at a satisfactory level, widespread drought conditions which have been experienced over many months I have had a serious effect on primary industry. No less than forty-four of the fifty-nine Pastures Protection Districts throughout the State have been declared drought-stricken areas. This clearly indicates the extent and seriousness of the drought conditions which have existed and which still exist in most districts. Due to these conditions it is anticipated that the State's wheat harvest is likely to be less than one-half of last season's yield. Many pastoralists have been involved in heavy stock losses and in meeting the costs of transporting fodder and stock over long distances. The Government has taken a number of special measures to assist with ; drought problems. These include the provision of substantial subsidies for the conveyance of stock for agistment to more favourable areas and also for the carriage of fodder from interstate and local sources. Arrangements have also > been made for the purchase by farmers in necessitous circumstances of wheat I - on terms for stock feeding and also for the provision of finance at concessional ~ates of interest to assist dairy farmers with their special problems.

    30 Sir John Northcott (1 August 1946 – 31 July 1957) Chris Cunneen The 30th representative of the Crown in New South Wales, John North- cott, was the first Australian to be State or colonial Governor.1 It was only after extraordinary pressure from the Premier William McKell that King George VI, advised by the British Government, agreed to the selection. Birth and military career John Northcott was born on 24 March 1890 at Creswick, Victoria, eldest son of English-born parents: his father, also named John, owned a general store in the nearby town of Dean, his mother was Elizabeth, née Reynolds. Young John was the eldest of four sons and one daughter. Educated at Dean State School and Grenville College, Ballarat, he was a keen member of the school cadets. He was also an enthusiastic horse rider, so in 1908 he enlisted in the Ninth Light Horse Regiment, a militia unit. Deciding on a full time career in the Army he passed the entry examinations and in 1912 joined the Permanent Military Forces as a Lieu- tenant on the Administrative and Instructional Staff. He was posted to Tasmania. On the outbreak of World War I he transferred to the Aust- ralian Imperial Force and in August 1914 was appointed Adjutant of the 12th Battalion, based at Anglesea Barracks, Hobart.2 Northcott’s service record at this time described the 24 year old as five feet eight and a half inches tall, with a fair complexion and blue eyes. His Battalion left for Egypt in October 1914. On Sunday, 25 April 1915, Northcott was one of the first to land at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli.

  • Sir Eric Winslow Woodward
    31 Sir Eric Winslow Woodward (1 August 1957 – 31 July 1965) Ken Turner Sir Eric Winslow Woodward was the first Governor of New South Wales to have been born there – at Hay on 21 July 1899.1 His grandfather had been a pioneer landowner in the area, while his father, Albert William, was managing a station near Booligal when Eric was born. Before Eric was two, his family moved to southern Queensland where his father again managed properties, first near Charleville, then from 1907 near Clifton on the Darling Downs. Until he was nine, Eric was an outback child, usually shoeless, edu- cated by his mother because schools were so far away. After briefly attending a small State school, he became a pupil at Toowoomba Gram- mar on 31 January 1911. A brother had died shortly before, and his family life was further disrupted by the death of his father on 28 November 1911, his skull fractured by a horse kick. With no compensation or estate, Eric’s mother, Marie Caldwell (née Reid), supported two sons by running a boarding house and later by working as a housekeeper. Hopes for the boys’ future had to be scaled down. At Toowoomba Grammar Eric did well; he played rugby in the firsts, captained the swimming team, and won the Prefects’ Prize along with others for Mathematics, Languages, and General Proficiency. Neverthe- less, he could not afford to take up a career requiring university training. Instead he won a scholarship to the Royal Military College, Duntroon. There was family precedent for this; his great grandfather CW Wall had retired as Lieutenant-Colonel in 1827 after serving as Commanding Offi- cer of The Buffs in New South Wales.

    To the Department of Labor: Millions of Americans are counting on their 401(k)s and retirement accounts, and many depend on investment professionals for guidance in managing these complex plans. We should be able to trust our financial advisers to put our interests first. But the current rules make it easy for unscrupulous advisers to line their own pockets at our expense. It's time to close this loophole and insist that the professionals who present themselves as honest retirement advisers actually give honest advice, instead of a sales pitch disguised as advice. It's difficult enough to save for retirement without having to contend with advisers who put their interests ahead of ours. I'm counting on you to close this loophole now.     Colonel Gerard Maurice (Gerry) Salom 8 November 1931 – 6 April 2015 By Colonel (Retd) Arthur Burke OAM ‘Soldier, warrior, officer, farmer, gentleman, husband, father, supporter, role model’ were the family’s words below a photograph on the ‘thank you’ card. These words aptly summed up a remarkable man, Gerard Maurice (Gerry) Salom who passed away peacefully on 6 April 2015 at his lovely country mansion in Valla, just south of Coffs Harbour on the NSW north coast. The first of three sons to Maurice and Peg Salom of South Perth, Gerry came into this world on 8 November 1931 and began his formal education at the South Perth State School. The family was fragmented in 1942 when his mother died and Gerry was sent to boarding school at Wesley College in South Perth. He spent his school holidays during the war years on an aunt and uncle’s property south-west of Perth. Daughter Caroline surmises that this probably explained Gerry’s keenness to return to the land after he left the Army. After the Second World War, Maurice built a home for the family in South Perth but no sooner had the Saloms all been reunited than Gerry went off to the Royal Military College at Duntroon on the other side of Australia in 1949. His classmate, retired Brigadier Ray Sunderland AO recalls that, having been obliged to repeat his first year at RMC, ‘he was a great help to all the new [first year] cadets including me. I remember him as a gentle, modest and helpful person who did not rock the boat and made no waves.’ Lieutenant Salom graduated on 9 December 1953 and was posted to 1st Field Regiment RAA at Georges Heights in Sydney.

  • Sir Eric Winslow Woodward KCMG CB CBE
    Sir Eric Woodward KCMG CB CBE DSO The degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) was conferred upon Sir Eric Woodward KCMG CB CBE DSO, the Governor of New South Wales, at a special meeting of Senate held on 29 April 1959 in the Great Hall. Report Sir Eric Woodward graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon and was commissioned in December, 1920. Following the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Australian Imperial Force on its formation in 1939, and left for the Middle East with the 6th Australian Division. He took part in the Battle of El Alamein, and for his services was made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. He had previously been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services with the 6th Division at the Battle of Bardia. Following his return to Australia in 1943, he served as Brigadier General Staff Northern Territory Force, and then in senior staff appointments at Australian Army Headquarters. When the Pacific War ended he was serving at Morotai in the Netherlands East Indies. After the war he served on the staff of Army Headquarters till the end of 1947. 1948 was spent at the Imperial Defence College, and 1949 as Australian Army Representative in the United Kingdom. He returned to Army Headquarters, and in 1951 became Deputy Chief of the General Staff. Later that year he became Adjutant-General and Second Military Member of the Military Board, while in December, 1953, he was promoted Lieutenant-General and appointed General Officer Commanding Eastern Command.
