Right side up before folding. + right side wrong side right side right side + WASHING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SACRED CLOTHS After Mass the Acolyte should place any used/soiled purificators (purifiers), finger towels and corporals in the laundry bag in the cupboard where the priest’s vestments are stored. Ministers of Communion (Eucharistic Ministers and Acolytes) are asked to assist in cleaning the sacred cloths, so after mass please check the laundry bag and take them home. How to wash sacred cloths: • First soak the cloths in clean cold water in a bucket. • Wring out the cloths. • Pour the water from the bucket into your garden. This is so that any wine may be dissolved and returned to the earth. • Spray any marks (lipstick…) with ‘Preen’ (etc). • Soak cloths in a soaking powder (eg. oxygen bleach soak) to make them clean and white. • You may then wash and rinse them by hand or in the washing machine. Please iron the cloths as instructed on the handout given. Thank you for your care of the Sacred Cloths. .

Altar Server Words and Objects To Know Acclamation: literally "a holy shout!" We sing the Gospel Acclamation as a way of praising God who is present in the Word. We join more fully during the Church's solemn Eucharistic Prayer when we respond with the eucharistic acclamations it contains. Acolyte: someone who helps prepare for the liturgical ceremony, leads the congregation, and assists the priest as a minister of Communion. The acolyte, one of the Church's ministers, is instituted by the Bishop or his delegate in a special ceremony. Advent: the four weeks before Christmas, during which we prepare for Christ's final coming as well as for the upcoming Christmas feast. The priest wears violet, which is a traditional color of waiting, preparation, anticipation and expectation. Advent Wreath: a festive circular wreath, often made of greens, arranged to hold three violet candles and one pink (or rose) candle. The candles are lighted for the Saturday evening and Sunday Masses of Advent, with one additional candle lighted each week so that the Light of Christ becomes brighter as we approach Christmas. The candles may be changed for white ones, which would burn during the Christmas season until the Baptism of the Lord. Alb: a long, white garment which covers the entire body. This was the clothing that the citizens of ancient Rome wore. The alb is always worn by the priest and deacon. In some parishes, servers and other liturgical ministers also wear albs. Altar: the place where the sacrifice of Jesus is offered to the Father and made present to us.

THE SANCTUARY AND THE ALTAR GLOSSARY OF TERMS ALTAR CANOPY Required by liturgical law to cover at least the altar and predella (to denote the dignity of the altar and the priest, which represent) there are several names that refer to distinct types: • Baldacino (baldachinum and in English, baldaquin): a canopy made of textile suspended from the ceiling. The word comes from the Italian word for “Baghdad” where the type of textile (made from silk woof and metallic warp) once came from This term is often mistakenly used in reference to a ciborium or civory. • Ciborium, civory: a canopy borne by columns. • Tester: a canopy suspended from the ceiling, or even attached directly to the ceiling. This is a particular favorite of English- style churches AMBO A pulpit-like lectern, from which the Epistle and Gospel were once read. Some churches had two, located on either side of the sanctuary, while other churches had only one. Often the ambo(s) was located on the rood screen and had to be ascended by a stairway, whence came the name, Gradual (steps) referring to the proper chanted before the Gospel, for it would be chanted while the deacon (often with the subdeacon, thurifer and acolytes) would ascend the steps while it was sung. St. Clement’s Basilica in Rome still has matching ambos. ANTEPENDIUM [altar frontal] A rectangular vestment used to cover the front of the altar. The term comes from the fact that it is often hung in front of the altar either from a suspending rod just under the mensa or from the middle altar cloth.

An altar server is a lay assistant to a member of the clergy during a religious service. An altar server attends to supporting tasks at the altar such as fetching and carrying, ringing bells, setting up, cleaning up, and so on. Until 1983, only young men whom the Church sometimes hoped to recruit for the priesthood and seminarians could serve at the altar, and thus altar boy was the usual term until Canon 230 was changed in the 1983 update to the Code of Canon which provided the option for local ordinaries (bishops) to permit females to serve at the altar. The term altar server is now widely used and accepted. When altar servers were only young men and seminarians the term acolyte was used. An acolyte is one of the instituted orders which is installed by a bishop. The title of acolyte is still only given to men as it is historically a minor order of ordained ministry. The sanctuary is the area in the center and toward the front of the church where the altar, the ambo, and the priest’s and altar server’s chairs are located. 2. The sacristy is the room where the priest, deacon and altar servers vest and prepare for Mass. Many of the items used in the celebration of the Mass are stored there. 3. Other areas include the baptistry, where the baptismal font is located and where baptisms may be celebrated; the vestibule, the entrance to our church; and our four confessionals, where the sacrament of penance is celebrated. 2. The Care and Cleansing of Altar Linens 1 in the Archdiocese of St. Louis Adapted from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Divine Worship Whatever is set aside for use in the liturgy takes on a certain sacred character both by the blessing it receives and the sacred function it fulfills. Thus, the cloths used at the altar in the course of the Eucharistic celebration should be treated with the care and respect due to those things used in the preparation and celebration of the sacred mysteries. This brief statement reflects on the importance of reverently caring for altar lines which, because of their use in the liturgy, are deserving of special respect.1 These linens should be “beautiful and finely made, though mere lavishness and ostentation must be avoided.”2 Altar cloths, corporals, purificators, lavabo towels and palls should be made of absorbent cloth and never of paper. Altar linens are appropriately blessed according to the Order for the Blessing of Articles for Liturgical Use.3 The blessing and number of such articles for liturgical use may take place “within Mass or in a separate celebration in which the faithful should take part.”4 Altar Cloths Just as the altar is a sign for us of Christ the living stone,5 altar cloths are used “out of reverence for the celebration of the memorial of the Lord and the banquet that gives us his body and blood.”6 By their beauty and form they add to the dignity of the altar in much the same way that vestments solemnly ornament the priests and sacred ministers.

Good Friday High Mass
SOLEMN AFTERNOON LITURGY OF GOOD FRIDAY An adapted version of the Solemn form without deacon or subdeacon With customs practiced by the Society of St. Pius X1 FOREWORD The Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday adheres in many ways to the ancient form of the Roman Mass and hence many contrasts to older practices are witnessed throughout. The rite’s order imitates an Ember Day Mass, but without an Offertory, Canon or Consecration (a remnant of the former Mass of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts). There is also: • the veneration of the cross (derived from a similar ceremony practiced with the True Cross in Jerusalem), • the gradual preparation (addition of the altar cloth—once performed during Mass, placement of the candles and cross—once carried by the crossbearer and acolytes in procession and then placed near or upon the altar), • the denuding (denudatur) of the altar (once performed after every Mass; also seen on Holy Thursday), • and double translation of the Blessed Sacrament (recalling an older method of distributing Communion after Mass, and in cathedrals, of retrieving the Hosts from a special chapel of reservation; also seen on Holy Thursday). The order of this unique rite will be recognizable for those familiar with the Eastern Rites’ Divine Liturgies. The ceremonies are also characteristically Roman, particularly in the starkness of the decorations employed, which are kept to a bare minimum. ABOUT THESE NOTES The Solemn form of the Holy Week ceremonies is the ideal method, but this is not always practical in a typical parish situation that lacks the requisite number of ordained ministers for the various positions.2 This fact was recognized and dealt with during the Holy Week reform, thus several options exist for rendering the ceremonies as solemn as possible according to the situation, either per the Solemn, Semi-Solemn or Small Churches form.
