A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDING OFFICERS OF THE GENERAL CONVENTION Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As your Presiding Officers we appointed the Special Commission on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion late in 2005. The Special Commission was asked to prepare the way for a consideration by the 75th General Convention of recent developments in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion with a view to maintaining the highest degree of communion possible. They have admirably discharged this very weighty task. With our deep thanks to them we commend their report to you. Here we would like to make three observations. First, though this document is a beginning point for legislative decisions—and indeed includes eleven resolutions—it is first and foremost a theological document. Its primary focus is on our understanding of our participation as members of the Anglican Communion in God’s Trinitarian life and God’s mission to which we are called. Second, the report is intended as the beginning point for a conversation that will take place in Columbus under the aegis of the Holy Spirit. That is, it is intended to start the conversation and not conclude it: the Commission has seen itself as preparing the General Convention to respond in the wisest possible ways. Again, we thank the members of the Special Commission who have been servants of this process of discernment. Third, following up on the careful work done by the Commission, the General Convention is now invited into the Windsor Process and the further unfolding of our common life together in the Anglican Communion. -

Read the Parish History
For all those, past and present, who have worshipped and made the Church of the Ascension the warm and welcoming sanctuary that it is. Introduction The Right Reverend Peter R. Coffin Eighth Bishop of Ottawa Congratulations on the publishing of this history of the Church of the Ascension, which actually spent its first four decades as Holy Trinity on Canal Road in the village of Archville. The Rector at the time of the name change was Robert Jefferson, who later became the third Bishop of Ottawa. So many things have changed since that time. With the building of the Pretoria Bridge, the parish no longer needed its row-boat to ferry parishioners across the Canal. What a pilgrim image! And now the Church of the Ascension is very much an inner city congregation and has adapted to that reality in so many ways. I have a sense that this is a deeply loyal and supportive community, well concerned about and engaged in those things required by God: “to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8). This parish has seen much of the history of this city, and has lived through the tumult of the last century. In the midst of this, it is a witness, and may it continue to be so. In the quest for the Kingdom of God, there are often difficult times and always a need for a generous and gentle people to establish God’s rule. Blessings. In the peace and grace of Jesus. International Commission of the Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue
International Commission of the Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue June 2005 Communiqué The Kykkos Monastery, Cyprus The International Commission of the Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue met in the Holy Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of Kykkos, in Cyprus, from Thursday, June 2nd - Wednesday, June 8th, 2005, as guests of the Church of Cyprus and of the Most Revd Bishop Nikiforos of Kykkos, the Abbot of the monastery. The Commission wish to record their gratitude to His Eminence the Abbot, the brothers and staff of Kykkos Monastery for the warmth of their welcome, and to Bishop Vasilios of Trimithus who has organised and co-ordinated the many aspects of this meeting, together with the staff of the Ecumenical Relations Office of the Church of Cyprus. The Commission consists of representatives of the Orthodox Churches and of the Anglican Communion. The Dialogue began its work by exploring theological and doctrinal issues of concern for dialogue between the Anglican and Orthodox Churches in 1973. Agreements reached in its first two stages were set out in the Moscow Agreed Statement of 1976 and the Dublin Agreed Statement of 1984. In its present third phase, which began in 1989, the Commission has been examining our understanding of the Church in the light of our faith in the Holy Trinity, the Person of Christ and the Holy Spirit. From 1989, the Commission has met on an annual or biannual basis, completing Statements on Trinity and the Church, Christ, the Spirit and the Church, Christ, Humanity and the Church (all 1998), Episcope, Episcopos, and the Church (2001), Christ, the Priesthood and the Church (2002). -

September 2013 Remember the Sabbath
ANGLICAN JOURNAL Inspiring the faithful since 1875 vol. 139 no. 7 september 2013 Remember the Sabbath September seems to be all about gearing up for back to school, back to work, back to the rat race after the fleeting reprieve of summer holidays (if you had any). The promise that computers and labour-saving technology would mean more leisure time for everyone now seems laughable in the face of statistics that clearly show most people are working harder and longer than ever. In the midst of that busyness, and the stress that comes with it, the Journal poses the question, have we forgotten Sabbath? “Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work” is the fourth commandment (Ex. 20:8–10a), but what does it mean in a society that can shop, work and chatter online 24/7? What have we lost? What does it cost? (Melbourne College of Divinity) School of Arts Faculty of Arts Griffith University A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2007 ABSTRACT The Anglican Church of Australia agreed to a national constitution in 1962. Yet at a national level it is hardly a cohesive body with a sense of unity and common purpose. Historically, Australian Anglicanism developed along regional lines, with the result that diocesan separateness rather than national unity became enshrined as a foundational principle of Anglicanism in Australia. This study questions this fundamental premise of the Anglican tradition in Australia. It argues (1) that it is not a true reflection of the Anglican ethos, both in its English origins and worldwide, and (2) that it prevents Anglicanism in Australia from embracing its national vocation. An alternative tradition has been present, in fact, within Australian Anglicanism from the beginning, although it has not been considered to be part of the mainstream. Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican bishop in Australia, was deeply sensitive to the colonial context in which the Anglican tradition was being planted, and he adapted it accordingly. -
Anglicans and the Interpretation of Scripture
Southwark Cathedral Lecture July 3rd 2008 ANGLICANS AND THE INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE INTRODUCTION – BIBLE, BELIEF AND WORSHIP Original title: “The Anglican Understanding and Use of Scripture” I queried the use of “the” and the singular (in “understanding and use”). I was always taught that Anglicans have no separate doctrine and belief – this is rather a commonly repeated tenet of Anglicans. Archbishop Geoffrey Fisher: “We have no doctrine of our own – we only possess the Catholic doctrine of the Catholic Church enshrined in the Catholic creeds and those creeds we hold without addition or diminution.”1 Bishop Stephen Neil: “There are no special Anglican doctrines, there is no particular Anglican theology.”2 This view was challenged by Bishop Stephen Sykes in an essay originally written for the Lambeth Conference of 1988 and reprinted his Unashamed Anglicanism, in which he argues at least for an Anglican understanding of the church, if not doctrine, which also includes a commitment to the public reading of scripture.3 I would be interested to know how Canon Jane Steen’s lecture handled this topic of Anglican Belief last week! (not yet on the website). But at the very least, even granting Bishop Sykes’ point about an Anglican understanding of the church, there is no one, single Anglican doctrine for the understanding and use of scripture. Furthermore, the use of the singular “scripture” itself is somewhat problematic. After all, ta biblia in Greek, the word which gives us our singular word ‘Bible’, is actually plural, and means ‘the books’ so the phrase, “the scriptures” is a much better translation of ta biblia – and recognizes the essential plurality of the scriptures, namely that the Bible is a library containing some 66 books, written in several different languages, in a variety of literary genres and types (narrative, poetry, drama, prophetic oracles, biographies, letters and so forth) over a period 1 G.F. -

Salvation and the Church An Agreed Statement SECOND ANGLICAN/ROMAN CATHOLIC INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION The Status of the Document The document published here is the work of the Second Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC II). It is simply a joint statement of the Commission. The authorities who appointed the Commission have allowed the statement to be published so that it may be discussed and improved by the suggestions received. It is not an authoritative declaration by the Roman Catholic Church or by the Anglican Communion, who will evaluate the document in order to take a position on it in due time. The Commission will be glad to receive observations and criticisms made in a constructive and fraternal spirit. Its work is done to serve the progress of the two communions towards unity. It will give responsible attention to every serious comment which is likely to help in improving or completing the result so far achieved. This wider collaboration will make its work to a greater degree work in common, and by God's grace "will lead us to the full unity to which he calls us" (Common Declaration of Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Pentecost 1982). Preface by the Co-Chairmen The 29th of May 1982, the Eve of the Feast of Pentecost, was a day of great significance for the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches on their path towards unity. In the footsteps of St Augustine of Canterbury whom his predecessor Pope Gregory the Great had sent from Rome to convert the English, Pope John Paul II visited Canterbury.
