As a rule, a lining eliminates the need for time-consuming seam finishes while lengthening the life and durability of the fashion garment. According to Kathleen Spike, noted clothing writer, “Nothing places a garment in the ‘custom’ or ‘couture’ category as distinctly as a professionally applied lining.” 1 Lining – a separate, but attached inner layer of fabric construction which conceals or covers the inside garment construction. STANDARDS OF A WELL-MADE/APPLIED GARMENT LINING A suitable lining fabric: Is compatible with garment fabric in terms of care and fiber content. It can be cleaned in the same manner as the garment. Can be either woven or knit fabric as long as it is compatible with the garment fashion fabric. Permits and accommodates the necessary “give” and recovery needed for body movement. Is firm, yet not bulky; colorfast to perspiration and body oils; absorbent or “breathable.” Is opaque so as not to see the inside construction of the garment. Matches or coordinates with the garment fashion fabric. Has a smooth surface texture to permit the garment to be taken on and off the body with ease. Weight is the same or somewhat lighter and softer than the fashion fabric so as not to dominate the fashion garment. Is preshrunk (pre-washed or dry-cleaned) prior to cutting. Examples of this include: – Narrow shoulders might need a size 20, bust might need a 24 and hip might require a 32. Also note the wrist cuff might work in a size 16. – In this scenario, the hood, neck shoulder and the top half of the armhole would be cut on the 20. The lower half of the armhole would be gradually cut towards the 24. There are changes in the rules and new classes. 1. See General Rules on pages 189-191. 2. Exhibitors are limited to one entry in each class. 3. Unless otherwise specified, any item entered in Textiles must be: a) Handmade; b) The work of the person in whose name it is entered; Textiles c) Finished within the last three (3) years. Exhibitors must certify the above by signing the space provided on the entry form. 4. Items in this department must be made primarily of Textiles. 5. We understand that many quilts are now made by two people: one person may piece the quilt and another person actually quilts the quilt. Such items MUST be entered in classes 29-42. Group Quilts, or those made by 2 people, are not permitted in any other class. Also, we accept items in this department with the understanding that the work has been done by the entrant, who agrees to be governed by Fair rules and regulations. 6. EXHIBITORS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REMOVE ARTICLES FROM THIS DEPARTMENT UNTIL MONDAY, AUGUST 27 AT 9:00 A.M.
