Vooraf George Baker schreef ruim 400 liedjes, maakte 23 al- bums, scoorde 35 hits in eigen land en stond twee keer hoog in de Amerikaanse Billboard Hot 100. Hij verkocht meer dan 20 miljoen platen en toerde over de hele we- reld. Zijn nummers klinken in Hollywoodfilms en tv-re- clames. Inmiddels is hij de 70 gepasseerd maar nog dage- lijks in zijn huisstudio te vinden, waar hij componeert en opneemt. Een paar keer per maand staat hij ergens op een podium. Zijn carrière omspant een halve eeuw. Dit verhaal begon in de zomer van 1969, toen de 24-jarige fabrieksarbeider Hans Bouwens liedjes begon te schrijven. Een van zijn eerste nummers, ‘Little Green Bag’, werd tegen alle verwachtingen in een internationaal succes. De maker bleek geen onehitwonder: in de jaren die volgden scoorde hij met zijn George Baker Selection de ene gouden plaat na de andere. De grootste klapper kwam in 1975. Een simpel blokfluitdeuntje leidde tot ‘Pa- loma Blanca’. Het liedje stond in tientallen landen boven aan de hitlijsten en ging minimaal 6 miljoen keer over de toonbank. Nog bijzonderder was wat andere artiesten ermee deden. Het nummer is opgenomen door wereld- beroemde popsterren en obscure groepen, is een instru- mentale evergreen en leeft voort in hardrock-, disco- en houseversies. Er zijn zo’n 450 officiële uitvoeringen van. Dat is minder dan de 2000 covers van ‘Yesterday’ van The 9 Beatles, maar aanzienlijk meer dan de 370 versies die er van Bob Dylans ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ bestaan. ‘Paloma Blanca’ is met afstand de meest gecoverde song van een Nederlandse artiest.

Dutch Industry Veteran Gerry Oord Dies April 16, 2010 By Werner Schlosser, Hilversum Gerry Oord has died aged 96. He was widely regarded as "the godfather of the Dutch record industry." Born in 1913, Oord virtually grew up in the record store of his father. It was in that period that he decided to start a record business of his own. Right after World War II, in 1946, he founded Bovema (Bot Oord Verkoop Maatschappij). Bot was the name of his business partner, who remained in the background. Roel Kruize, who joined Bovema in 1961 and ran the company from 1972, tells Billboard.biz Oord was "a legend." "He aimed for the acquisition and successful exploitation of labels," he says. "Gerry had very good contacts with British and American record executives and lawyers. This resulted in exclusive representations of labels such as Columbia, Warner Bros., His Master's Voice, Regal, Parlophone and MCA. Oord was the very first outside of the United States to close deals with labels like Motown and Asylum." The way Oord acquired a license for the exploitation of the Capitol label describes Oord best, Kruize recalls. "During the festivities celebrating the end of World War II, he met an American soldier with an American magazine under his arm," he says. "This appeared to be a copy of Capitol News and Oord decided to write them a letter. He received an answer from Buddy DeSylva, artist and co-owner of Capitol Records. This led to the rights to sell and distribute the label in the Netherlands. Oord was also very successful with Dutch acts like Johnny Jordaan, Peter Koelewijn (the Netherlands' first rock 'n' roll artist), the Cats and BZN.

And after years with interesting focuses on countries such as Italy, Belgium and Norway, finally Eurosonic Noorderslag is coming home. Hosting nation Holland is this year’s focus country. Birthday boy is pushing the boat out with a presentation of a range of great Dutch bands. Holland’s musical history in a nutshell The topic of the ‘possible existence of a history of Dutch music’ sometimes generates interesting discussions at the bar at the international music conferences. There’s always a group of registrants that starts singing Golden Earring’s 1972 global monster smash Radar Love straightaway, and there’s that group of hipsters who deliberately start staring ignorantly. ‘Dutch music? Yeah, yeah,’ they say. What’s that? ‘Name a few bands then?’ In recent years we’ve seen a lot of true aficionados of Dutch pop, rock and dance, but also we’ve met the sceptics, who simply denied the existence of such a thing as Dutch music. Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, okay, they acknowledge the Dutch masters of painting. But pop, rock, dance? ‘No, never heard of.’ It’s time to prove them wrong. Holland is focus country, and you’ll know it. To be fair, the awareness of Dutch pop, rock and dance history could do with a little boost.

Music in The Netherlands Ever since it’s declaration of independence in 1579 the Netherlands have always been in close contact with the rest of the world. Sandwiched in between Belgium, Germany and the North Sea the Netherlands used to sail out to explore the outside world, while opening its doors for outsiders. In arts, Holland is famous for its paintings by Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer. Bleeping radar When it comes to music, the Netherlands have long been known for Golden Earring (hit: „Radar Love“), The George Baker Selection („Little Green Bag“, „Una Paloma Blanca“) or Shocking Blue („Venus“). In recent years this has changed, thanks to the massive worldwide success of Dutch Dance Music. Producers/DJ’s like Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, Fedde LeGrand, Ferry Corsten, Chuckie, Laidback Luke or Tiësto are massively popular all over the globe, including that country every musician dreams of conquering: the United States. 18 year old superstar It’s not just these guys who are making waves abroad. The next generation of producers and DJs are ready to follow in their footsteps. They go by the names of Hardwell, Sander van Doorn, Nicky Romero, Dash Berlin and Martin Garrix, an 18 year old producer/DJ who graduated this year from one of Hollands acclaimed music schools. School of Rock Each year, music schools like the Rockacademie in Tilburg, Codarts in Rotterdam, the Amsterdam Conservatory, ARTez in Enschede and the Minerva Academy for Pop Culture in Leeuwarden bring forth new talent that fi nds a place in the Dutch music scene. The Netherlands have a long standing tradition of welcoming visitors from all over the world, best illustrated by the biggest harbor in Europe (Rotterdam), an airport with excellent connections to major cities worldwide (Schiphol airport in Amsterdam) and a centuries long tradition of welcoming immigrants from all walks of life (Amsterdam). No wonder the Netherlands have always been a magnet for immigrants, visitors and outside influences. Combined with the influences of former colonies like Suriname and Indonesia and immigrants from Morocco and Turkey this has resulted in a thriving cultural climate where dozens of cultures meet and cultural exchanges are part of everyday life.
