  • The Neutral Coalescent Process for Recent Gene Duplications and Copy-Number Variants
Copyright Ó 2007 by the Genetics Society of America DOI: 10.1534/genetics.107.074948 The Neutral Coalescent Process for Recent Gene Duplications and Copy-Number Variants Kevin R. Thornton1 Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Irvine, California 92697 Manuscript received April 24, 2007 Accepted for publication August 6, 2007 ABSTRACT I describe a method for simulating samples from gene families of size two under a neutral coalescent process, for the case where the duplicate gene either has fixed recently in the population or is still segregating. When a duplicate locus has recently fixed by genetic drift, diversity in the new gene is expected to be reduced, and an excess of rare alleles is expected, relative to the predictions of the standard coalescent model. The expected patterns of polymorphism in segregating duplicates (‘‘copy-numbervariants’’)depend both on the frequency of the duplicate in the sample and on the rate of crossing over between the two loci. When the crossover rate between the ancestral gene and the copy-number variant is low, the expected pattern of variability in the ancestral gene will be similar to the predictions of models of either balancing or positive selection, if the frequency of the duplicate in the sample is intermediate or high, respectively. Simulations are used to investigate the effect of crossing over between loci, and gene conversion between the duplicate loci, on levels of variability and the site-frequency spectrum. UPLICATED genes are a ubiquitous feature of eu- consist of three parts: first, the identification of the D karyotic genomes. Comparative genome sequenc- recent duplicate; second, an investigation of patterns ing has revealed that distantly related organisms, such of polymorphism and/or divergence; and third, some as flies, worms, yeast, and humans, have roughly similar assay of function, often at the level of gene expression, is gene numbers, but that the sizes of individual gene performed to show that the new gene is functional.

  • The Last Beethoven Overture This Study Is, Above All, the Outcome of A
1 The Last Beethoven Beethoven, deaf, working on the manuscript of the Missa Solemnis (painting by Josef Karl Stieler, 1819) Overture This study is, above all, the outcome of a long-lasting personal concern that goes back to the period of my first music lessons and my attempts to play Beethoven’s music on the piano. My passion for certain musical compositions, the care to interpret them in the way, with the sensitivity and in keeping with their creator’s intentions might be translated as follows: I wish to perform as if he could hear me and could recognize himself in the music I performed. I was filled, at a very early age, with the desire to know as much as possible about his personality, his life, the events and the circumstances that led to the birth of his work. It is obvious and easy to prove, based on Beethoven’s own notes and the testimonies of those who have written about him for nearly two hundred years, that there were external triggers, such as social and even historical events or happenings, which activated certain musical themes that his genius and sensitivity gave expression in the form known to us today. In this study, I will speak, at the appropriate time, about situations, contexts and events of this kind: family problems, like the affair involving his nephew Karl, 2 or sentimental issues, like the “Immortal Beloved” (Der Unsterbliche Geliebte), the drama entailed by hearing loss, the evolution of event on the European stage during the Napoleonic and post-Napoleonic periods, etc.

  • The Politics of the Contemporary Alternate History Novel
What Almost Was 63 What Almost Was: The Politics of the Contemporary Alternate History Novel Matthew Schneider-Mayerson Between August of 1995 and July of 1996, Speaker of the House of Rep- resentatives Newt Gingrich published two books. One, To Renew America, a folksy Republican polemic cobbled together from Gingrich’s speeches, served as a sequel to Contract with America, the blueprint of the conservative movement that assumed control of Congress in 1995.1 The other was 1945, coauthored with William R. Forstchen, a novel set in an alternate universe.2 In 1945’s divergent timeline, Germany does not declare war on the United States, the Soviet Union is split into fragments, and the United States and Germany have settled into a cold war. Nazi soldiers parachute into the United States to a capture a nuclear facility in Tennessee, but posses of arms-bearing American veterans successfully defend their country. 1945 was representative of the flourishing genre of alternate history novels in all but two ways: an author’s celebrity and its media exposure. Due to Gingrich’s status as the public leader of the conservative renaissance of the mid-1990s, 1945 was widely reviewed in mainstream publications. Treated as a curiosity and ridiculed for its poor literary quality, very few reviewers noted the libertarian themes in 1945, and even fewer placed it in the context of an inchoate literary genre.3 1995 can be considered the birth year of the alternate history novel as a genre. As a conceptual category, the counterfactual, as historians term their what-if narratives, has been pursued in print since classical Greece, if not earlier.

  • Presentations of Emperor Hirohito in Japanese War-Related Museums
134 For Our Students Editors’ Note: The following article was selected by the editors from a number of final reports recommended by Van Symons, Director of the ASIANetwork Student-Faculty Fellows Program funded by the Freeman Foundation, as an outstanding example of student scholarship. Chelsea Robinson traveled to Japan as a participant in the Program with a team of students from Willamette University in the summer of 2009. Professor Miho Fujiwara was the faculty advisor. Presentations of Emperor Hirohito in Japanese War-Related Museums Chelsea Robinson Willamette University Abstract Emperor Hirohito is a controversial figure in the narrative of World War II. Depictions of his role as monarch have ranged from the deified leader of a militaristic nation to a tragically powerless figurehead. My research examines depictions of Emperor Hirohito in Japan today through the multimedia and multipurpose modes of museum exhibits. The three Japanese war-related museums examined were selected for their variance in management and educational purpose. This paper aims to investigate the variety of ways in which Japanese war-related museums utilize or omit Emperor Hirohito and how the emperor’s portrayal contributes to the agenda of each museum. Rationale & Objectives Emperor Hirohito and Japan at War In order to analyze Emperor Hirohito’s complex image, we must first try to understand the political and social situation leading up to and during his rule. The situation may be traced back at least as far as the Meiji Restoration (1869), which took place in the name of the emperor, and the formation of Japan ASIANetwork Exchange Presentations of Emperor Hirohito in Japanese War-Related Museums 135 into a constitutional monarchy.

The galaxy is in flames. The Emperor’s glorious vision for humanity is in ruins. His favoured son, Horus, has turned from his father’s light and embraced Chaos. His armies, the mighty and redoubtable Space Marines, are locked in a brutal civil war. Once, these ultimate warriors fought side by side as brothers, protecting the galaxy and bringing mankind back into the Emperor’s light. Now they are divided. Some remain loyal to the Emperor, whilst others have sided with the Warmaster. Pre-eminent amongst them, the leaders of their thousands- strong Legions are the primarchs. Magnificent, superhuman beings, they are the crowning achievement of the Emperor’s genetic science. Thrust into battle against one another, victory is uncertain for either side. Worlds are burning. At Isstvan V, Horus dealt a vicious blow and three loyal Legions were all but destroyed.

  • FOR the EMPEROR Sandy Mitchell Sandy Mitchell «For the Emperor»
A WARHAMMER 40,000 NOVEL FOR THE EMPEROR Sandy Mitchell Sandy Mitchell «For the Emperor» To Judith, for everything. Sandy Mitchell «For the Emperor» IT IS THE 41st millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. YET EVEN IN his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battleflects cross the daemon‐infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperors will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio‐engineered super‐warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever‐vigilant Inquisition and the tech‐priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever‐present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants ‐ and worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times.
