EPILOGUE 193 REFERENCES - published 195 OTHER SOURCES 214 PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Preface and acknowledgements Petrological study of the Velenje lignite presented and discussed in this monograph started in 1992. It was initiated by Aleksander BREZIGAR and Dr. Bogomir JELEN, two excellent geologists working for the Geological Survey of Slovenia at that time. They informed the first author about a possibility to do systematic logging, petrographic description and sampling of lignite in the cores of boreholes P-8z/92, P-9k/92, and P-12o/92 situated in the northern marginal and central area of the Velenje basin. When this initial work was completed, Aleksander BREZIGAR organized a presentation of the study results at the Velenje Lignite Mine. On this basis, a long lasting and still ongoing cooperation with the colleagues at the coal mine, especially with Dr. Simon ZAVŠEK, was established. It also should be highlighted, that the petrological investigations during the whole duration of the project were financed exclusively by the Velenje Lignite Mine (VLM) led during the last twenty years by the following directors: Dr. Franc ŽERDIN, Dr. Evgen DERVARIČ and Dr. Milan MEDVED. The first author worked many hours in the underground mine and spent a lot of time with geological investigations in the geomechanical laboratory of the VLM. We thank Janez JEZERŠEK and Edo BURIČ, who led this laboratory, as well as the entire laboratory staff for their permanent assistance, taking care of safety, and enabling best possible working conditions, which contributed significantly to the success of this study. Sincere thanks are also given to groups of unnamed miners who transported hundreds of core boxes from the mine into the laboratory, thus providing ideal conditions for core logging and sampling. In this laboratory, also low temperature ashing of lignite samples was performed. We appreciate the great help of Mrs. Jožica ROUŠNIK, who did this work with great patience and accuracy. The decision to restart petrological research of the Velenje lignite following Dr. Milan HAMRLA's pioneering studies in the 1950s was highly influenced by the work of Dr.

Slovenia is a story of love, a love of being active in nature, which is almost second nature to Slovenians. In every large town or village, you can enjoy a view of green hills or Alpine peaks, and almost every Slove- nian loves to put on their hiking boots and yell out a hurrah in the embrace of the mountains. Thenew guidebook will show you the most beauti- ful hiking trails around Slovenia and tips on how to prepare for hiking, what to experience and taste, where to spend the night, and how to treat yourself after a long day of hiking. Save the dates of the biggest hiking celebrations in Slovenia – the Slovenia Hiking Festivals. Indeed, Slovenians walk always and everywhere. We are proud to celebrate 120 years of the Alpine Associati- on of Slovenia, the biggest volunteer organisation in Slovenia, responsible for maintaining mountain trails. Themountaineering culture and excitement about the beauty of Slovenia’s nature connects all generations, all Slovenian tourist farms and wine cellars. Experience this joy and connection between people in motion. This is the beginning of themighty Alpine mountain chain, where the mysterious Dinaric Alps reach their heights, and where karst caves dominate the subterranean world. At the same time, a growing appreciation of regional issues has raised interest in regional differences in each of these countries. This volume of the “Portrait of the Regions” series responds to this need and follows on in a tradition which has seen four volumes devoted to the current Member States, a fifth to Hungary, a sixth volume dedicated to the Czech Republic and Poland, a seventh to the Slovak Republic and the most recent volume covering the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Examining the 12 statistical regions of Slovenia, this ninth volume in the series has an almost identical structure to Volume 8, itself very similar to earlier publications.

  • Manuscript Title in Title Case
The Radioactivity of River Sediments in Slovenia as a Consequence of Global and Local Contamination Denis Glavič-Cindro, Matjaž Korun "Jožef Stefan" Institute Jamova cesta 39, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia [email protected], [email protected] Milko Križman Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration, Železna cesta 16 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia [email protected] ABSTRACT In this article we discuss the activity concentrations of natural and man-made radionuclides in moving and bottom river sediments. The moving sediments were collected during a six-week period, while the bottom sediments were obtained by grab sampling. The concentrations of the radioisotopes were systematically larger in the moving sediments than in the bottom sediments. The contamination of the sediments with man-made radionuclides Cs-137 and I-131 was observed, as well as enhanced concentrations of natural radionuclides. Cs-137 was identified in all the samples; I-131 was identified at the locations where the influence of discharges from hospitals was expected, as well as at locations where there is no direct influence of these discharges. From a comparison between the concentrations of radioisotopes of the uranium and thorium decay series in different samples, the influence of industrial activities was identified. Elevated concentrations of U-238, Ra-226 and Ra-228 identified the probable influences of coal, lead and uranium-ore mining and the processing of monazite in the production of TiO2. 1 INTRODUCTION The Euratom Treaty [1] requires all the Member States of the European Union to monitor continuously the level of radioactivity in the air, water and soil. Whereas monitoring the air and soil is relatively easy, by pumping air through aerosol filters and by measuring the dose rate above the soil, the continuous monitoring of water is more demanding.

  • Povratne Dobe Velikih in Malih Pretokov Za Merilna Mesta Državnega Hidrološkega Monitoringa Površinskih Voda
POVRATNE DOBE VELIKIH IN MALIH PRETOKOV ZA MERILNA MESTA DRŽAVNEGA HIDROLOŠKEGA MONITORINGA POVRŠINSKIH VODA Sektor za analize in prognoze površinskih voda Urad za hidrologijo in stanje okolje November 2013 Agencija Republike Slovenije za okolje POVRATNE DOBE VELIKIH IN MALIH PRETOKOV Ve čina hidroloških procesov v naravi se zgodi naklju čno, zato je uporaba verjetnostne teorije in matemati čne statistike v hidrologiji neizogibna za reševanje hidroloških problemov in za boljši opis hidroloških procesov. Verjetnost nastopa dolo čenega pojava predstavlja eno izmed najpomembnejših analiz hidroloških podatkov, kjer na podlagi predhodnih dogajanj napovedujemo dogodke v prihodnosti. V izra čunih so upoštevana razpoložljiva obdobja podatkov do vklju čno leta 2010. Za ra čunanje povratnih dob smo uporabili Pearson III in Log Pearson III porazdelitveni funkciji, ki sta v hidrološki praksi najpogosteje uporabljeni metodi.

  • MESTO DEJINY Cultural Heritage of Post-Socialist New Towns. A
MESTO a DEJINY Cultural Heritage of Post-Socialist New Towns. A Comparison of Eisenhüttenstadt and Velenje Ana Kladnik – Andreas Ludwig vol. 5, 2016, 2, pp. 50-67 This paper deals with the issue of the New Towns built in the 1950s in East Germany and Yugoslavia, in particular Eisenhüttenstadt in Germany and Velenje in Slovenia. The authors would argue that socialist New Towns have gained historical and public recognition over recent decades and seem to have adopted a sense of heritage, both on the local and national levels. This article discusses the interpretations and recognition of (post-) socialist towns as places of cultural and historical value, as well as the post-socialist practices of the locals with regard to the cultural heritage of their towns. The national and local recognition of both New Towns reflect their position at the time of their planning and building in the 1950s. Eisenhüttenstadt was a showcase town for East Germany and has currently been (inter-) nationally recognised as a new, model town, while lacking a local sense of heritage. On the other hand, plans for the new town centre of Velenje, its financing and construction, were initiated by the local authorities and the Coal Mine Company managers, with the substantial assistance of the town’s residents. While the New Town of Velenje immediately started to cultivate its mining identity, as well as the value of being a town built with the voluntary contribution of its residents, the heritage of Velenje being a new, modern town was and is discussed and contested locally and only partly nationally.
