In fact, while Starr’s song was still an anti-Vietnam War battle cry, ground- breaking television programs like M*A*S*H (CBS, 1972-1983) were using laughter and tongue-in-cheek treatment of the horrors of war to provide a somewhat more palatable expression of the growing anti-war sentiment to American audiences. -

EX ALDERMAN NEWSLETTER 188 and CHESTERFIELD 133 by John
EX ALDERMAN NEWSLETTER 188 AND CHESTERFIELD 133 By John Hoffmann August 10, 2015 ALDERMEN DON'T LIKE WHAT THEY SEE ON WEBSITE: At the July 27 Board of Aldermen meeting there was the second reading and vote on a conditional use permit allowing the St. Louis Spine and Orthopedic Surgery Center continue operating in the Town and Country Commons (where the Post Office and the Charter Cable customer service office are located) under new ownership. Several alderpersons were upset with a website that was already up and running for the facility. Here is the website and a close up of the problem. In the bill the hours of operation were from 6 am to 9 pm. This is similar to the hours of operation for the new BJC/Children's Hospital hours of operation. Several alderpersons did not like that the website was advertising overnight stays. St. Louis Spine and Orthopedic Surgery Center agreed to remove that from the website. 13 days later it was still on the website. However under "Office policies" it lists "Hours of Operation" as 7am to 5pm, but offers overnight stays. 1 The bill was amended and when voted on read, "Observation stays up to 5 patients for up to 23 hours." This passed on a 6-1 vote with Linda Rallo voting no. It is interesting that the aldermen gave this operation better hours than the St. Louis region's largest hospital group which just opened their new children's surgery center on Mason Road and I-64. TELLING TIME THE SKIP MANAGE WAY: If you remember a couple of weeks ago we wrote how Alderman Skip Mange wrote in the city newsletter a piece on the history of Town and Country. -
Lancastrians, Tudors, and World War II: British and German Historical Films As Propaganda, 1933–1945
arts Article Lancastrians, Tudors, and World War II: British and German Historical Films as Propaganda, 1933–1945 William B. Robison Department of History and Political Science, Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA 70402, USA; [email protected] Received: 2 February 2020; Accepted: 3 August 2020; Published: 10 August 2020 Abstract: In World War II the Allies and Axis deployed propaganda in myriad forms, among which cinema was especially important in arousing patriotism and boosting morale. Britain and Germany made propaganda films from Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 to the war’s end in 1945, most commonly documentaries, historical films, and after 1939, fictional films about the ongoing conflict. Curiously, the historical films included several about fifteenth and sixteenth century England. In The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), director Alexander Korda—an admirer of Winston Churchill and opponent of appeasement—emphasizes the need for a strong navy to defend Tudor England against the ‘German’ Charles V. The same theme appears with Philip II of Spain as an analog for Hitler in Arthur B. Wood’s Drake of England (1935), William Howard’s Fire Over England (1937), parts of which reappear in the propaganda film The Lion Has Wings (1939), and the pro-British American film The Sea Hawk (1940). Meanwhile, two German films little known to present-day English language viewers turned the tables with English villains. In Gustav Ucicky’s Das Mädchen Johanna (Joan of Arc, 1935), Joan is the female embodiment of Hitler and wages heroic warfare against the English. In Carl Froelich’s Das Herz der Königin (The Heart of a Queen, 1940), Elizabeth I is an analog for an imperialistic Churchill and Mary, Queen of Scots an avatar of German virtues. -
