VIRUS OUTBREAK Afghan security forces hit hard by coronavirus

BY SUSANNAH GEORGE, AZIZ TASSAL AND SHARIF HASSAN The Washington Post KABUL, Afghanistan — The corona- virus is sweeping through Afghanistan’s security forces, according to senior Af- ghan security officials from four provinces who report suspected infection rates of 60 to 90% among their units — reducing the number of forces available to conduct op- erations or take up duty at outposts. Few have died, the officials say, but little to no testing capacity has forced many into weeks of isolation, leaving deployable forc- es stretched thin at a time when the country is under pressure from both increased Tal- iban violence and from the United States, where officials are eager to see the govern- ment and militants begin direct talks. Afghanistan has extremely low coronavi- rus testing rates: Less than 0.2% of its pop- ulation — 64,900 people out of an estimated 37.6 million Afghans — have been tested.

A person with direct knowledge of Cook’s decision confirmed to The Associ- ated Press that the Pro Bowl pick will not take part in the remainder of the offsea- son program or report to training camp without a new contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the negotiations. If Cook were to skip part or all of camp, which remains a tentative event due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pan- demic, the Vikings wouldn’t worry much about the lost repetitions. “Dalvin could teach class. He’s that bright and that smart of a football play- er,” offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak said this week. “It’s part of the business, and guys like him, professionals like him, take care of themselves.” Cook had a breakout season in 2019, with 1,135 yards and 13 touchdowns rushing plus 519 yards receiving in 14 games. He had 303 total touches, a per-game average (21.6) that ranked fourth in the NFL. But Cook has missed 21 games, including play- offs, to injuries over three years in the league. The 2017 second- round draft pick tore his ACL as a rookie, had a hamstring strain in 2018, and dealt with shoulder trouble last season.

Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is holding out of team activities until he has a new contract.
