HTTPS://THEBOBCATSNEWSLETTER.WORDPRESS.COM Welcome to another edition of the Bob Cats Newsletter. It's night time in the big city. The heavy bass line from an electric Fender bass guitar rattles the walls of the humble abode of the cracked actor on his hands and knees looking for the bottle cap to his Mexican root beer. A streetcar named Macondo goes by adding tremble and wobble to the painted boards on top of The Black Swan. He recognizes the fateful steps of madam McIntyre-Mire, landlord and loan shark from the Baltic Midlands, bringing wine and bread on a silver tray for his nocturnal shift. She’s wearing a quarantine mask in leather and doesn’t bother to knock. Nothing in this living world would upset her except late rents and polkas. The night nurse’s crying in her coffee in an all-night café. Life is but a string well-tuned or cut. The sign of the Saint James Hotel’s twinkles, it’s a bad wire and a burned connection. And there's some of that here. Yet, in the wake of losing both E Street saxophonist Clarence Clemons (who passed in June at age 69 from complications following a stroke) and organist/keyboard player Danny Federici (after a battle with cancer in 2008), Lofgren begins the forthcoming Old School embroiled in a vinegary rage. He comes tearing out to open this project, set for release on Tuesday by Vision Records—making a bold statement of rock 'n' roll purpose on the title track: “Old School" is this crunchy, horn- driven kiss off to those who spend more time whining than they do working to accomplish something—made complete by a boisterous guest vocal turn by Lou Gramm of Foreigner fame. Lofgren then white knuckles it through the riffy “60 is the New 18," a fleet little aside than owes no small debt to the Springsteen's rangy late-period rockers—only updated with a crumpled new -wave guitar signature.

How an encounter that never happened might have helped to change history if it had By Shawn Poole Ever since he was a child, Bruce Springsteen has been strongly influenced by the artistry of Elvis Presley. Over the years, the “E Street”/”Elvis” connection has remained strong. Most recently, Springsteen participated along with E Street Band members Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa in the Elvis: Viva Las Vegas television special (now on DVD in the U.S., where it hit #1 on the Billboard DVD sales chart), and its accompanying soundtrack album. E Streeters Garry Tallent and Max Weinberg also were on hand at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to induct Elvis’ original drummer and bassist, D.J. Fontana and the late Bill Black. Presley was only forty-two years old when his life tragically ended. “They found him slumped up against the drain,” Bruce Springsteen would later sing of his fallen idol, “with a whole lot of trouble running through his veins; Bye-bye, Johnny; Johnny, bye-bye; You didn’t have to die; you didn’t have to die.” While Elvis’ premature decline and death did absolutely nothing to stop his immense cultural influence, it did rob the world of many more years of music from this great artist. It also ensured that Bruce Springsteen would never get another chance to meet the man who initially inspired his own musical career. (He had two chances: one famous unofficial chance when he jumped the wall at Graceland in 1976 and one not-as-famous in 1977 when local concert promoters offered Springsteen an official chance to meet Elvis backstage before his final Philadelphia concert.) But what if Bruce had gotten to meet Elvis before August 16, 1977? Might things have turned out any differently for either or both of them, as well as the many other lives they affected? In this work of speculative fiction, Shawn Poole ponders the possibilities, poignantly reminding us of the promise and potential that tragically disappeared in that long ago summer.

  • Nils Lofgren Releases a 16-Track Collection, Weathered, Which Was Recorded on the Road in 2019
NILS LOFGREN RELEASES A 16-TRACK COLLECTION, WEATHERED, WHICH WAS RECORDED ON THE ROAD IN 2019. BY RAY CHELSTOWSKI NILS LIVE here’s a good reason why Nils Lofgren has been a key Tmember of groups like the E Street Band, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band and Crazy Horse. Simply put, he’s that good! Now a new live record ar- rives that perhaps more than any other of his releases puts a spotlight on his extraordinary guitar playing, his tones and technique. The 16-track collection, entitled Weathered, was recorded on the road last year between his work with the E Street Band and Crazy Horse. This was his first tour with a full band in over 15 years, and he was joined by some world-class talent: Andy Newmark on drums (John Lennon, Sly Stone, David Bowie, Eric Clapton), Kevin McCormick on bass, vocals (Crosby, Stills and Nash, Jackson Browne, Melissa Etheridge, Keb’ CHRISTINA ARRAGONI Mo’) and the real show stopper, Cindy 52 NOVEMBER 2020 goldminemag.com 52_923 Lofgren.indd 52 9/9/20 12:46 PM Mizelle on vocals (Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen). His brother Tom (who’s been playing with Nils since his early band Grin) rounds things off. Among the many singles fans will wel- come from his solo records, the album also contains tracks from his recent Lou Reed tribute Blue With Lou and great covers like the Hank Williams’ classic “Mind Your Own Business” — not to mention an all-out funky guitar jam take of The Temptations staple “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” Lofgren and the band put Lofgren with Bruce on a real clinic pushing and pulling the Springsteen, live at song forward, playing with its construct Wembley Stadium on June 4, 2016, in in ways that allows each instrument to London, England.

Trinity Church in the City of Boston The Rev. Morgan S. Allen April 15, 2021 III Easter, Luke 24:36b-48 Come Holy Spirit, and enkindle in the hearts of your faithful, the fire of your Love. Amen. Nils Lofgren ran away from home just a few weeks into his senior year of high school. He “put a note of apology … under [his] pillow … hitchhiked to the airport, flew to [New York City], subwayed to Greenwich Village … and found [himself] in an upstairs dressing room at the Fillmore East with The Animals, who were performing there” that night.i After that first evening, though, Lofgren caught pneumonia and, nine days later, returned to his mom and dad on Chicago’s South Side. Upon convalescing their son, the Lofgrens made the unorthodox “decision to [allow Nils to abandon his studies and] stay in his old room while pursuing [his rock-n-roll] dream[s, albeit while paying] a reasonable rent, [following] all [the] house roles [they set], [and keeping his daily] chores.”ii Yet that same winter, Nils found his way backstage “at The Cellar Door[, a club] in Washington D.C, where [none other than] Neil Young handed [Nils] his … guitar and listened to [the young Lofgren] play … [Nils would watch] four Neil Young & Crazy Horse shows that weekend, [after which the Canadian frontman] encouraged [Lofgren] to “look him up” if [Nils ever] got to [Los Angeles]. Still just 18, Nils did make it to L.A, and did “look up” Neil Young. iii In fact, upon their reconnection, Young asked him “to play guitar, piano, and sing a bit” on what would become After The Gold Rush, one of rock-n-roll’s great albums.iv While best known for his collaborations – after his work with Neil Young, most notably for his long career as a member of the E Street Band – Lofgren has built an expansive solo catalogue over the last fifty years.
