It goes along a number of streets (= triq in Maltese) of the village of Munxar, through the adjacent countryside, along the port of ix-Xlendi, and back to the village square. The whole length of the trail traced here is just under 6500 metres or 6.5 km long. A number of diversions, indicated by the word DETOUR may prolong the walk or, in some cases, provide a shortcut. Most of the walk is along country streets and pathways, but two short tracts are over rather rough terrain so it is imperative to be prepared. The walk is divided into six segments; distances from one point of the walk to another are rounded up. 8 • A WALK THROUGH THE DISTRICTS OF IL-MUNXAR AND IX-XLENDI • 9 A. The children of the locality had the opportunity to be part of the project by carrying out chiselling in small areas of the stone under the guidance of the sculptor.

Elaine Azzopardi, Timmy Gambin, Renata Zerafa Ancient anchors from Malta and Gozo Elaine Azzopardi, Timmy Gambin, Renata Zerafa In 2011, the national archaeological collection managed by Heritage Malta included 24 lead anchor stocks. They are the remains of ancient wooden anchors used on boats that sheltered in the harbours and bays of the Maltese Islands. This paper includes a gazetteer documenting these stocks with the aim of highlighting their value to maritime archaeology and to create a tool that will facilitate further study. Anchors form part of the basic equipment of seagoing and the placing of these in a broader context will help vessels. A total of 46 species of Auchenorrhyncha are reported from the Maltese Islands. They belong to the following families: Cixiidae (3 species), Delphacidae (7 species), Meenoplidae (1 species), Dictyopharidae (1 species), Tettigometridae (2 species), Issidae (2 species), Cicadidae (1 species), Aphrophoridae (2 species) and Cicadellidae (27 species). Since the Auchenorrhyncha fauna of Malta was never studied as such, 40 species reported in this work represent new records for this country and of these, Tamaricella complicata, an eastern Mediterranean species, is confirmed for the European territory. One species, Balclutha brevis is an established alien associated with the invasive Fontain Grass, Pennisetum setaceum. From a biogeographical perspective, the most interesting species are represented by Falcidius ebejeri which is endemic to Malta and Tachycixius remanei, a sub-endemic species so far known only from Italy and Malta. Three species recorded from Malta in the Fauna Europaea database were not found during the present study. KEY WORDS. Malta, Mediterranean, Planthoppers, Leafhoppers, new records. INTRODUCTION The Auchenorrhyncha is represented by a large group of plant sap feeding insects commonly referred to as leafhoppers, planthoppers, cicadas, etc. They occur in all terrestrial ecosystems where plants are present. Some species can transmit plant pathogens (viruses, bacteria and phytoplasmas) and this is often a problem if the host-plant happens to be a cultivated plant.

  • Pottery from Roman Malta
Cover Much of what is known about Malta’s ancient material culture has come to light as a result of antiquarian research or early archaeological work – a time where little attention Anastasi MALTA ARCHAEOLOGICAL REVIEW SUPPLEMENT 1 was paid to stratigraphic context. This situation has in part contributed to the problem of reliably sourcing and dating Maltese Roman-period pottery, particularly locally produced forms common on nearly all ancient Maltese sites. Pottery from Roman Malta presents a comprehensive study of Maltese pottery forms from key stratified deposits spanning the first century BC to mid-fourth century AD. Ceramic material from three Maltese sites was analysed and quantified in a bid to understand Maltese pottery production during the Roman period, and trace the type and volume of ceramic-borne goods that were circulating the central Mediterranean during the period. A short review of the islands’ recent literature on Roman pottery is discussed, followed by a detailed Pottery from Roman Malta contextual summary of the archaeological contexts presented in this study. The work is supplemented by a detailed illustrated catalogue of all the forms identified within the assemblages, presenting the wide range of locally produced and imported pottery types typical of the Maltese Roman period. Maxine Anastasi is a Lecturer at the Department of Classics and Archaeology, University of Malta. She was awarded a DPhil in Archaeology from the University of Oxford for her dissertation on small-island economies in the Central Mediterranean. Her research primarily focuses on Roman pottery in the central Mediterranean, with a particular Malta from Roman Pottery emphasis on Maltese assemblages.
