In this multi-layered course that speaks to both history and the media, we will revisit historical events and social justice campaigns in the last century and examine how journalists covered them. We will also learn about some of the giants of the profession, the advances by women and journalists of color, as well as some of the villains. And we will explore the media’s impact on the country by reading, viewing and listening to the actual work of previous generations of journalists. We’ll also review the advances in technology that made newsgathering easier and more accessible to the public. By peeling back the layers of events in the last century and reviewing the caliber of journalism, we will be reminded once more of the immense power – and responsibility – we hold in our hands as journalists. As we travel through the last 100 years by way of readings, documentaries and photographic archives, we will visit a nation often in tumult. From the suffrage movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries, to the golden age of magazines and their impact of social issues, to the Progressive movement and the rise of investigative journalism, the profession has documented the nation’s growth and evolution – even as the profession itself changed to adequately cover the unrest of a nation. You will also discover in your research and in class discussions the importance of sources for news coverage. Who made news, who covered it, and why were certain communities, events and movements covered? Why were others not the object of media coverage? Who packaged the news and what impact did that have on the way information was relayed? Who is quoted in news stories and who is not? We will explore these and other questions in our quest to produce stronger journalism across multiple platforms in the 21st century. Understanding the triumphs and failures of the profession over the last century will make you a better journalist and a more educated consumer of news. Overall Learning Objectives and Assessment When you complete this course – a required class in the undergraduate journalism major – you will: • Understand the role and influence of a journalist, both historically and in contemporary times, and how that role has changed over the last century and continues to change. • Comprehend the role journalists played in social justice movements, including suffrage, immigration, civil rights, LGBTQ and other seminal moments and movements in U.S. history. • Understand the role of journalism and its practitioners in the U.S. and overseas, through the lens of foreign correspondents. • Recognize the important role that diversity – both in sources and in newsrooms – plays in the creation of accurate and inclusive coverage of multicultural America and beyond. • Assess the role of technology – from radio to television to digital platforms – in the gathering and dissemination of the news. • Define emerging trends in journalism, from evolving revenue sources to the impact of citizen journalists to the growing mistrust of the media by the American public. Description of Assignments There are two exams and two short research papers, including the final, administered roughly at the end of each month in the semester. The exams and research papers will gauge your understanding of the content through a combination of short essay questions and will be given during class. We will review material in the class preceding each exam. Academic accommodations will be provided for students who produce the required paperwork. There are no make-up exams and no late research papers will be accepted. Exceptions: illness, with a doctor’s note, and family emergencies. The exams will be graded on a 100-point basis. Essay responses will be graded for accuracy and depth and for grammar, spelling and punctuation. Each grammar, spelling and punctuation error will result in the loss of one point. Incomplete responses on the essay questions will result in up to a 10-point deduction. The research papers, three to five pages long, will require you to review news coverage from an era or an event of your choosing and critique the coverage using contemporary standards. Most coverage, sometimes even contemporary content, will fall short of “best practices” and these short papers will remind you of the impact of both exemplary journalism and news coverage that falls short. Absences beyond the three class meetings will require a note from your doctor, if the absence is the result of illness, or other evidence to document your absence, whether it is for purposes of an athletic event [if you’re an athlete] or if there is an emergency in your family [a death or series accident.] No exceptions. Attendance will be taken every class meeting via Blackboard. Students will receive a code at the start of class to mark their presence in Blackboard. If you miss more than 25 percent of the class – or a quarter of the classes – you will not receive the 10 percent for class participation. Losing this percentage could affect your final grade by a full letter, depending on your performance on the exams and research papers. You will then be evaluated for broadcast style, editing, production value, originality and the ability to meet deadlines. “A” stories are accurate, clear, comprehensive stories that are well written and require only minor copyediting (i.e., they would be aired or published). Video work must also be shot and edited creatively, be well paced and include good sound bites and natural sound that add flavor, color or emotion to the story. “B” stories require more than minor editing and have a few style or spelling errors or one significant error of omission. For video, there may be minor flaws in the composition of some shots or in the editing. Good use of available sound bites is required. “C” stories need considerable editing or rewriting and/or have many spelling, style or omission errors. Camera work and editing techniques in video stories are mediocre or unimaginative, but passable. Sound bites add little or no color - only information that could be better told in the reporter’s narration. “D” stories require excessive rewriting, have numerous errors and should not have been submitted. Camera work is unsatisfactory or fails to show important elements. “F” stories have failed to meet the major criteria of the assignment, are late, have numerous errors or both. Your copy should not contain any errors in spelling, style, grammar and facts. Any misspelled or mispronounced proper noun will result in an automatic “F” on that assignment. Any factual error will also result in an automatic “F” on the assignment. Accuracy is the first law of journalism. The following are some other circumstances that would warrant a grade of “F” and potential USC/Annenberg disciplinary action: • Fabricating a story or making up quotes or information. • Plagiarizing a script/article, part of a script/article or information from any source. • Staging video or telling interview subjects what to say. • Using video shot by someone else and presenting it as original work. • Shooting video in one location and presenting it as another location. • Using the camcorder to intentionally intimidate, provoke or incite a person or a group of people to elicit more “dramatic” video. • Promising, paying or giving someone something in exchange for doing an interview either on or off camera. • Missing a deadline. Assignment Submission Policy The exams will be administered via Blackboard and Zoom and will be submitted to the instructor at [email protected]. The instructor and the course’s two teaching assistants will return your work in two weeks. Required Readings and Supplementary Materials Required readings are listed in the syllabus. Other readings will be posted on the J201 Blackboard site. Laptop Policy All undergraduate and graduate Annenberg majors and minors are required to have a PC or Apple laptop that can be used in Annenberg classes.

    A News Desert in a University City Ann Arbor, MI, a city of 125,000 and home of the University of Michigan has NO daily print newspaper. Local news is covered by student reporters from the University’s Daily. In some areas of the country, high school student journalists are providing coverage of local events. One example is our own Ryan Doucette, a junior at BHS, who is now covering meetings of the Selectmen, the Finance Committee, and Capital Expenditures, to name a few. Ryan has proven to be an astute observer of town affairs and a capable writer who “turns around’ his copy within hours, literally, of a meeting. His work is then copy-edited and posted in timely fashion in The Bedford Citizen. Of particular local interest is the reporting on Cape Cod. David Abel will report on the effect of warming waters on the endangered North Atlantic right whales for both a feature-length documentary and The Boston Globe. Nestor Ramos, Anush Elbakyan, John Tlumacki and a team of journalists at The Boston Globe have produced a major multimedia project examining the effects of climate change on Cape Cod’s wildlife, shoreline, property, fishing industry and other livelihoods.

    THE STATE OF THE NEWS: TEXAS GOOGLE’S NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE JOURNALISM INDUSTRY #SaveJournalism #SaveJournalism EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Antitrust investigators are finally focusing on the anticompetitive practices of Google. Both the Department of Justice and a coalition of attorneys general from 48 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico now have the tech behemoth squarely in their sights. Yet, while Google’s dominance of the digital advertising marketplace is certainly on the agenda of investigators, it is not clear that the needs of one of the primary victims of that dominance—the journalism industry—are being considered. That must change and change quickly because Google is destroying the business model of the journalism industry. As Google has come to dominate the digital advertising marketplace, it has siphoned off advertising revenue that used to go to news publishers. The numbers are staggering. News publishers’ advertising revenue is down by nearly 50 percent over $120B the last seven years, to $14.3 billion, $100B while Google’s has nearly tripled $80B to $116.3 billion. If ad revenue for $60B news publishers declines in the $40B next seven years at the same rate $20B as the last seven, there will be $0B practically no ad revenue left and the journalism industry will likely 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 disappear along with it. The revenue crisis has forced more than 1,700 newspapers to close or merge, the end of daily news coverage in 2,000 counties across the country, and the loss of nearly 40,000 jobs in America’s newsrooms.

It examines the different actor types on the social media platform to reveal patterns of sourcing used by the NPR social media strategist, who emerged as a key broker of information on Twitter during the Arab Spring. News sourcing is a critical element in the practice of journalism as it shapes from whom journalists get their information and what type of information they obtain. Numerous studies have shown that journalists privilege elite sources who hold positions of power in society. This study evaluates whether networked and distributed social media platforms such as Twitter expand the range of actors involved in the construction of the news through a quantitative content analysis of the sources cited by Carvin. The results show that non-elite sources had a greater influence over the content flowing through his Twitter stream than journalists or other elite sources.

In this work, we examine how the decline of local reporting capacity influences local levels of political corruption. As newspapers are an important investigative arm of local communities, it is possible that the decline of community media will embolden corrupt actors who believe they are less likely to be detected following the closure of a local newspaper. To examine these relationships, we leverage a novel dataset of federal charging documents of corruption and daily newspaper closures using a difference in difference approach. Results indicate a significant rise in federal corruption charges when major newspapers close in a federal district. Strikingly, we observe no evidence that the rise in online newsvendors is able to ameliorate this effect. This highlights the important role of the “fourth estate” in inhibiting corruption in governance. Significance Statement The increased connectivity afforded by the internet has led to a striking change in how people source their news. Whereas persons were once relegated to gathering information from their local paper and television outlets, they may now collect information from global content producers, hyper-partisan outlets, and unvetted online sources which are readily provided through social media platforms.

    International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 3497–3518 1932–8036/20170005 Reporting War in 140 Characters: How Journalists Used Twitter During the 2014 Gaza–Israel Conflict ORI TENENBOIM The University of Texas at Austin, USA Because Twitter may facilitate interconnectedness among diverse actors—elite and nonelite, inside and outside of a given national community—it can potentially challenge traditional war journalism that has typically been elite-oriented and nationally oriented. The present study examined this potential during the 2014 Gaza–Israel conflict. Based on a content analysis of Twitter messages by Israeli and international journalists, the study suggests that in wartime journalists on Twitter may have agency that can manifest in retweeting critical messages—not necessarily in the language of their national community—and conversing with people outside official power circles. However, institutional, cultural, and national forces still seem dominant, as particularly reflected in messages by journalists who are members of one of the conflicting parties. “Mr. Gates” on Twitter may have more agency than he had decades ago, but seems constrained by virtual national boundaries. By showing the extent of journalists’ agency and constraints, the study advances our understanding of war journalism in the digital age. Course Description The goal of this course is to introduce students to key moments, debates, and ideas that have shaped U.S. journalism from about the Revolutionary War period through today. Since this is a survey class, we won’t be spending too much time on any one topic, time period, or analytical framework. Instead, each class will examine social, cultural, political, and technological aspects of U.S. journalism, getting a sense of its overarching history as a profession and public service. E.g., how has the press historically both depended upon and challenged the state? How has the press funded itself? Where did the idea of journalistic objectivity come from and what does it mean? How has news served both market and public interests? What legal decisions shape the press’s rights and responsibilities? How does the press organize itself, and reorganize itself in light of technological innovation? At several points in the course, world-class scholars and practitioners will give guest lectures, sharing with us their experiences studying and working within the U.S. press. We’ll hear first-hand accounts of what it’s been like to participate in different periods of modern American journalism, examine historical archives of press coverage, and will end the semester with a review of how today’s journalism is tied to historical patterns.
