Fermi 40, Frascati 00044 (Rome), Italy 3Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géodynamique, CNRS-UMR 6112, Université de Nantes, Nantes, France Opals and cryptocrystalline silica may be found in a very broad range of geological environments (Chauviré et al., 2017), systematically related to the availability of an aqueous fluid. Due to its conditions of formations, opal may contain abundant H2O, CO2 or both (Sodo et al., 2017), and the presence of these molecules may provide information of their genetic context. In this work we studied a series of samples from the volcanic region of Allumiere-Tolfa, north of Rome (Latium, Italy). This district has a Pliocene-Pleistocene age and is related to the Tuscan acid volcanism. It shows a very intense late-stage hydrothermal alteration that gave rise to two distinct ore basins: one to the south of the Allumiere town, consisting of sulfide (Pb, Fe, Zn, Hg) and Fe-oxide mineralizations, and a second, to the north, mainly consisting of alunite and kaolin. Both ore deposits were intensely exploited during the medieval to recent period. The hydrothermal alteration giving rise to the sulfate and clay deposits is also associated with a pervasive deposition, within the early volcanics, of opaline or microcrystalline silica, consisting of mineral replacements, veins and formation of agate druses. Although the sulphide-sulfate and clay products have been studied, due to their interest as georesources, and relevant petrological, geochemical and isotopic data can be found in the oldest literature (Lombardi and Sheppard, 1977), the silica mineralizations have never been addressed. We studied here a series of samples occurring as vein depositions or as banded crystallizations from different areas in the volcanic district. The samples were examined by using a combination of XRD, SEM-EDS and FTIR + Raman imaging. Opaline silica with different degree of order, from opal AN (hyalite) to opal A to opal CT, was identified. Some samples contain CO2 besides H2O/OH. The banded agates were found to consist of a layering of micro-crystalline and fibrous quartz (chalcedony) with different water contents, interbedded with moganite-rich layers; moganite, in particular was found to be associated to lower H2O contents. The 18O and D/H isotopic data of Lombardi and Sheppard (1977) indicate temperatures around 120-100°C for the hydrothermal process responsible for the hydrothermal deposits, in close agreement with the typical range of T for the formation of opaline silica (Heaney, 1993). The ore forming process can be thus interpreted following the classical model of hydrothermal/metasomatic phenomena at low-depth, accompanied by extensive alteration of the pre-existing rocks, due to mixed magmatic/meteoric fluids, with the formation of kaolinite + alunite + sulfates + silica (Hedenquist et al., 2000). The steep slopes of the mountains have been deforested–several times in many cases–with consequent erosion; frane or avalanches remove large tracts of regolith, and doubly obliterate the archaeological record. In the valley-bottoms active streams have deposited and eroded successive layers of fill, sealing and destroying the evidence of settlement in many relatively favored niches. The more extensive lowlands have also seen substantial depositions of alluvial and colluvial material; the coasts have been exposed to erosion, aggradation and occasional tectonic deformation, or–spectacularly in the Bay of Naples– alternating collapse and re-elevation (“bradyseism”) at a staggeringly rapid pace. Earthquakes everywhere have accelerated the rate of change; vulcanicity in Campania has several times transformed substantial tracts of landscape beyond recognition–and reconstruction (thus no attempt is made here to re-create the contours of any of the sometimes very different forerunners of today’s Mt. Vesuvius). To this instability must be added the effect of intensive and continuous intervention by humanity. Episodes of depopulation in the Italian peninsula have arguably been neither prolonged nor pronounced within the timespan of the map and beyond. Even so, over the centuries the settlement pattern has been more than usually mutable, which has tended to obscure or damage the archaeological record. More archaeological evidence has emerged as modern urbanization spreads; but even more has been destroyed. What is available to the historical cartographer varies in quality from area to area in surprising ways.

Lo studio e stato effettuato con lo scopo di valutare la eventualita di ricadute dovute alle emissioni delle centrali termoelettriche di Civitavecchia. Gli elementi studiati (V, Ti, Mn, Al, e Si), sono stati analizzati mediante attivazione neutronica strumentale. II vanadio, in quanto presente nell'olio combustibile in concentrazioni pin elevate di altri elementi, e quindi considerate significative per caratterizzare le emissioni, mentre Ti, Mn, Al e Si, per la loro prevalente origine terrigena, e quindi utili per evidenziare i contributi dovuti alia componente litologica. Dai dati ottenuti si pud stabilire, in accordo con le stime teoriche sulle ricadute atmosferiche, che nell'arco di tempo relative all'esercizio delle centrali di Civitavecchia, non si osservano apprezzabili variazioni del vanadio nei suoli dei Monti della Tolfa.

In the twelfth century the powerful urban center of Tivoli adopted Rome’s grandest annual public event, the nocturnal Assumption procession of August 14-15, and transformed it into a potent civic expression that incorporated all sectors of the social fabric.     ASL RM F Comune di Cerveteri Servizio di Igiene degli Alimenti e della Nutrizione Cerveteri AVVISO ALLA CITTADINANZA L’origine geologica, per lo più vulcanica, di alcune aree del Lazio, tra cui i Colli Albani, i Monti Sabatini e i Monti della Tolfa , è la causa naturale di un suolo ricco di elementi minerali come il fluoro, l’arsenico e il vanadio. La presenza di tali elementi non è indice di inquinamento ambientale: è quindi normale che gli elementi minerali presenti nel suolo si ritrovino poi nelle falde acquifere per effetto del dilavamento delle rocce . Per cui alcune acque distribuite per il consumo umano sono particolarmente ricche di questi elementi. Le attuali norme di riferimento (D.Lgs. 31/2001 e successive modifiche) per le acque destinate al consumo umano, impongono dei valori limite di alcuni parametri , tra cui l’arsenico, più restrittivi di quelli della precedente normativa. In particolari aree geografiche del territorio nazionale, compresa la Provincia di Roma, tali valori sono superati. Il Ministero della Salute, per consentire ai gestori di realizzare gli interventi co ntenuti nei Piani di rientro approvati, ha concesso per un periodo di tempo limitato la possibilità di derogare al superamento dei valori limite dei parametri fluoro, arsenico e vanadio, per la fornitura di acqua de stinata al consumo umano, purché in concentrazione non superiore ai V.M.A. (valore massimo ammissibile) fissati dal Consiglio Superiore di Sanità. E’ importante evidenziare che i nuovi limiti sono estremamente cautelativi e il loro superamento, entro i valori massimi ammissibili, non provoca effetti acuti. Per quanto riguarda la Regione Lazio i valori massimi ammissibili per il fluoro, l’arsenico e il vanadio sono i seguenti: fluoro fino a 2,5 ÷ 3 milligrammi/l; arsenico fino a 50 microgrammi /l; vanadio fino a 160 microgrammi/l.

    LIFE MONTI DELLA TOLFA Project Urgent nature conservation measures in the SPAs and SCIs of the area Tolfetano-Cerite-Manziate LIFE MONTI DELLA TOLFA Project Urgent nature conservation measures in the SPAs and SCIs of the area Tolfetano-Cerite-Manziate birdlife forests Habitat Directive improving biodiversity management tools preservation techniques PROJECT DESCRIPTION The LIFE Project Monti della Tolfa had as its main objective the restoration and preservation of some endangered habitats and species (mainly rear birds). The initiative was also aimed at fostering a harmonious link between human activities and nature conservation, by favoring the traditional practices necessary to preserve the ecosystem of the area, as well as increasing awareness of residents and visitors on the importance of biodiversity and environmental heritage of the area also from the economic point of view. The Tolfa Mountains are a major natural area of great importance, 50 km from Rome, with biodiversity values among the highest in central Italy, characterized by pastures and Mediterranean forests. There are many environmental protection problems in the area. One of the most important is the slow transformation of open pastures in bushy areas taking to the reduction of the hunting areas of birds of prey and of the ecological niches useful to many species of passerines included in the Birds Directive (79/409 / EEC). In some forests, however, there has been a collapse of the forest formations due to climate change, which has threatened habitats not only of many bird species, but also of insects, amphibians and mammals. Other areas have been subjected to excessive pressure caused by cattle that, free to move, degraded pasture in the most favorable areas.
