While it is somewhat anachronistic to speak of any “doctrine” appearing in the NT, the language of systematic theology with its various and sundry doctrinal formulations provides a way of structuring the first century apostolic account of Christ. We will therefore use such language in this study. For historical reasons, the personal story of Tertullian opens this investigation. R. G. CoIIingwood is renowned for thinking of history as the re-telling of factical accounts. The story we are about to “re-tell” represents one of many narratives recounted by ecclesiastical historians. It does not claim to be the last word on the subject. In fact, after this inquiry, we are convinced that many aspects of Tertullian’s Christological project remain enshrouded in mystery. The modest goal of this study is simply to provide another perspective with regard to the study of Tertullian’s Christology. We must briefly say a word about the sources used in this thesis. In this study, we follow the numbering system used in Evans’ text and translation of Adversus Praxean, When citing De Anima, we adhere to Waszink’s numbering schema. The works of E. Evans, J. Waszink, J. Pelikan, J. Daniélou, A. Blaise, W. H. C. Frend, F. E. Peters, C. Gieschen, P. Carrel 1, E. Fortman, M. Alfs, R. Kearsley, and J. Morgan all served as indispensable works during the research portion of this work as did Tertullian.org. It has been a didactic experience interacting with the scholars mentioned hitherto. Upon becoming a Christian, Tertullian subsequently produced almost thirty significant theological documents that scholars have classified as apologetic, dogmatico-polemic and practico-ascetic.^ Adversus Praxean is indisputably a controversial treatise {liber controversialis) that Tertullian wrote in approximately 213 CE.^ It is therefore no surprise that this ancient document emphatically serves as a sublime example of Tertullian’s; “burning eloquence, biting satire, and forcible \o%\cP^ Adversus Praxean contains 31 sections {capita) that Tertullian appears to have structured in a manner ' E. Evans suggests that Tertullian died in 240 CE, based on a passage in Jerome that indicates the apologist lived to an advanced age {ad decrepitam aetatem).     The Hellenization of Christianity: A Historiographical Study1 ROBERT D. CROUSE XTENSIVE mscussmN of the problem of the hellenization of Christianity Ebelongs to modern times, particularly to the past four centuries. The question had, indeed, been raised in earlier days, from the time of Justin Martyr on, whenever it seemed necessary to explain parallels, or apparent parallels, between Christian doctrine and the philosophy of the Platonists, or between Christian sacraments and the practices of hellenistic cults. And it was in fact an inevitable question whenever, as in the spiritualist-rigorist tradition, from Montanism to Joachim of Fiore, there was an interest in showing a contrast between the pure religion of Apostolic times and the perversions of Churchly Christianity. One recalls Tertullian's remarks about the influence of Aristotle, the "father of all heresies." But the possibility of systematic and critical discussion of this problem, and the use of the concept of hellenization as a fundamental theme in the explication of the history of dogma, depended upon the circumstances of the Reformation. The rise of humanism, bringing a closer acquaintance with classical antiquity, together with the critical attitude of the Reformers towards the mediaeval theological tradition, and particularly their criticism of the impact of Aristotle in the scholastic age, planted the seed of the theory of hellenization. Never before in the history of the Church had the desire to demonstrate the contrast between primitive Christianity and developed ecclesiastical tradition been so widespread and intense; and all parties in the Reformation, from the Anabaptists and Spirituals to the more conservative Protestants, found in the concept of hellenization a ready weapon in their rebellion against the mediaeval Church.

    Miranda Threlfall-Holmes is Vicar of Belmont and Pittington in the Diocese of Durham, and an honorary fellow of Durham University. Previously, she was Chaplain and Solway Fellow of University College, Durham, and a member of the Church of England General Synod. She has first-class degrees in both history (from Cambridge) and theology (from Durham), and a PhD in medieval history. She trained for ordination at Cranmer Hall, Durham, and was then a curate at St Gabriel’s church in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne. She has taught history at Durham and Newcastle universities, as well as for the North East Institute for Theological Education, the Lindisfarne Regional Training Partnership and Cranmer Hall. As a historian and theologian, she has written and published extensively in both the aca- demic and popular media. Her doctoral thesis, Monks and Markets: Durham Cathedral Priory 1460–1520, was published by Oxford University Press in 2005, and she co-edited Being a Chaplain with Mark Newitt in 2011 (published by SPCK). The recently deceased editor-author has called this volume a sequel to his earlier Evolution and Theology (London, 1931; N. Y., 1932). Part I (pp. 1-216) is especially deserving of this designation. Entitled "Essays on Evo­ lution," it collects fourteen critical reviews or commentaries written by various theologians soon after the appearance of the 1931 volume. To many of these essays is added, in full, the subsequent published exchange between author and critic. The discussion is frequently closed with a summary com­ ment by Dr. Messenger in his present role of editor. Critics who figure in Part I include P. G. M. Rhodes, R. W. Meagher, B. C. Butler, O.S.B., P. J. Flood, J. O. Morgan, Michael Browne, W. H. McClellan, S J., W. J. McGarry, S J., E. F. Sutclifïe, S J., Al. Janssens, J. Bittremieux, A. Brisbois, S.J., J. Gross, and Père Lagrange, O.P. All con­ cede the significance of Evolution and Theology as the first full-length treat­ ment of the subject from the theological and scriptural viewpoint, but not all admit the treatment to have been fair. It may seem odd to omit discussion of the life and times of Christianity’s founder, but scholarly exploration of the first century of the common era is itself a field requiring a specific expertise. Rather than focus on Christian beginnings directly, we will refer to them as necessitated by later interpretations of scripture, liturgy, and practice. Second-century Christians were diverse, unorganized, and geographically scattered. Paul’s frequent advocacy of unity among Christian communities gives the impression of a unity that was in fact largely rhetorical. Before we examine Christian movements, however, it is important to remind ourselves that Christians largely shared the world- view and social world of their neighbors. Polarizations of “Christians” and “pagans” obscure the fact that Christians were Romans. They participated fully in Roman culture and economic life; they were susceptible, like their neighbors, to epidemic disease and the anxieties and excitements of city life. As such, they were repeatedly shocked to be singled out by the Roman state for persecution and execution on the basis of their faith. The essay investigates John Duns Scotus’s de- velopment of Christological doctrine against the strong Cyrilline tendencies of Thomas Aquinas. In particular the essay explores how Scotus’s innovative doctrine of the ‘haecceity’ of Christ’s human nature entailed a self-sufficing conception of the ‘person’, having to do less with the mystery of rationality and ‘communion’, and more to do with a quasi-voluntaristic ‘power’ over oneself. In this light, Scotus’s Christological development is read as suggestively con- tributing to make possible a proto-liberal condition in which ‘agency’ (agere) and ‘right’ (ius) are construed as determinative of what it means to be and act as a person. Keywords John Duns Scotus, ‘Scotist rupture’, Thomas Aquinas, homo assumptus Christology 32 Aaron Riches Introduction In A Secular Age, Charles Taylor links the movement towards the self- sufficing ‘exclusive humanism’ characteristic of modern secularism with a reallocation of popular piety in the thirteenth century.1 Dur- ing that period a shift occurred in which devotional practices became less focused on the cosmological glory of Christ Pantocrator and more focused on the particular humanity of the lowly Jesus. Taylor suggests that this new devotional attention to the particular human Christ was facilitated by the recently founded mendicant orders, especially the Franciscans and Dominicans, both of whom saw the meekness of God Incarnate reflected in the individual poor among whom the friars lived and ministered.
