What a Weekend

WOW! What a weekend. Full on… The race weekend was a huge success. It was great to see so many people really let their hair down. 51 horses were nominated over the 2 days of racing. The weather was right the atmosphere was great throughout the 2 days. The trainers were keen and eager. The facilities looked amazing. The organisation for the event was enormous. The flags blowing in the breeze, watching people having a punt or two on the horses winning or losing just having the facilities was great. The food was readily available. Bar drinks icy cold. The kids were well and truly catered for. To me it seemed as everyone was contented.

On that note the Meekatharra Racing Club would like to thank our sponsors, volunteers and our committee for putting on an awesome show without these people these events wouldn’t happen.

To Sinosteel Midwest for being our major sponsor this year. Your support in the up and com- ing weeks were great with Rowena with many phone calls with Lauren to organise banners and flags to put around the course. Once again we thank Sinosteel Midwest for the sponsor- ship and hopefully we will see them back in 2010.

To Peter Clancy, Trevor Renk and Mark Smith for the persistant work to get the band Rene- gade up to Meekatharra for the races. Wow! they were awesome...The club really appreciated your support in getting all of our big sponsorship for the weekend. Thanks once again.

To all the volunteers that helped put together the new jockey facilities. The jockey’s honestly were thrilled with the upgrade. Many hours of labour went into these rooms. Well done to all that were apart of this.

Big thanks to all the new life Members: Peter Moses Russel Evans Margie & Ron Bell Buff & Liz Coumbe Ross Howden Harvey Nicols Guy Bell Tom Hutchison

I hope every one had a great Christmas and a better New Year. The heat is here again. I know I’m having trouble keeping animals cool. Remember plenty of water, shade and a hose down helps, for the birds I’m spraying to help cool them down. Its not only pets to worry about; put water out for the birds they to are feeling the heat. Its good to see that people are putting water out for the other animals also. On a sad and angry note If you are going away get a reliable person to look after your animals and the other bug bear is people moving away and dumping their animals. Hopefully this year will be better for the animals; hopefully no cruelty. Jo Burgemeister 0428952791

January 2010 Frontier Services Murchison Patrol: Happy New Year and may 2010 be a great year all round, I look forward to touching base with many of you over the next twelve months.

Pancake Day in Meeka: Once again we at the Community Church (Frontier Services) plan to sell pancakes on Thursday 18 February ’10 in front of the Commercial Hotel – so start saving your $2 coins because they will be yummy. All monies raised on Pancake Day’s across WA help to provide grants to a variety of projects which in turn; help local communities. In the past two years Meekatharra has received over $2000.00 from Pancake Day, this year support goes to the Youth Centre.

Christmas in Meeka:

Carols by Candlelight: On Sunday night 20th December ’09 Stella, Alastair and I collected sausages, bread and Christmas stockings for the children to celebrate Carols by candlelight on the lawns of the Hospital, although it did seem at one point that we may have to run for cover as the late afternoon sky turned horribly black. But in true ‘bush spirit’ we just kept cooking…. Tamika King led the carols and the children sang along with her while others gave ‘us’ a special inside into what carols they knew. Thank you to all who supported the evening.

Christmas Hampers: Monday morning saw many helpers at the Meeka Shire Hall ready to pack 200 Hampers. These hampers were available to anyone who has a Health Care Card, plus completed an application form in the four weeks prior to Christmas.. Many thanks must go to all who assisted on the day; Farmer Jacks for their dedication to ordering and making sure all arrived on time, their ‘add-on’ donations for both events are appreciated. The Shire of Meekatharra for their gift to the community of 400 calico bags and the use of the Hall; hopefully those who received these calico bags will use them when you shop, saving on the plastic bags. Most importantly a Frontier Services gives a round of applause to LotteryWest for their donation of monies. These funds assisted in purchasing the food, each hamper was valued at around $70.00, and to the many people in the city who donated gifts for the children and Toll who transported them to us free of charge. A huge effort Thank you one and all.

The Meekatharra Dust 50 December 2009

And finally a message from the pulpit: Special Days January 6th was Epiphany. Twelve days after Christmas the church remembers the visit of the magi to the Christ Child. According to the gospel of Matthew, sages from the East came to Jerusalem seeking the child. They observed a new star rising and followed it to find the newborn king of the Jews. The word epiphany simply means “manifestation” or “sudden appearing”. During the Season after the Epiphany, which lasts from January 6th until the beginning of Lent (Easter), the church focuses on making Christ known to the world, reading stories of call, prophecy, and discipleship. Many churches observe the feast of the Epiphany on the Sunday prior, which this year fell on January 3rd.

The Church will reopen on Sunday 21 February 2010. Blessings, Revd. Lesley deGrussa-Macaulay, 67 Darlot Street, Meekatharra (or PO Box 14), P: 08 9981 1053, M: 0417 918 035.

Place butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until melted. Remove from heat. Combine bicarbonate of soda and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl. Stir into golden syrup mix- ture (mixture might become frothy). Add immediately to flour mixture and stir until well combined. 3. Roll mixture, 1/4 cup at a time, into balls. Place 4 biscuits on each baking tray. Flatten to about 12cm (diameter) round, allowing room for biscuits to spread. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, swapping trays after 10 minutes, or until biscuits are golden. Allow biscuits to cool completely on trays. Serve.
